This wildfire has become the deadliest in modern American history, surpassing the devastating Camp Fire in Paradise, California, in 2019.<\/p>\n<h3>Hawaiian \u200bElectric Launches Investigation<\/h3>\n<p>Hawaiian Electric CEO Shelee Kimura announced \u200dduring a press conference that the\u2063 utility will be conducting its own investigation into the incident. \u2064Additionally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nevada-trump-campaign-says-clark-county-registrar-joe-gloria-hiding-from-subpoena-service\/\" title=\"Nevada: Trump Campaign Says Clark County Registrar Joe Gloria Hiding From Subpoena Service\">state attorney general<\/a> will also be conducting an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be doing our own investigation. The state will be doing an investigation. We will cooperate fully in that. I\u2064 think we all \u200cbelieve it\u2019s important \u2064to understand what happened,\u2062 and I think we all believe it\u2019s important to make sure it never happens \u200dagain,&#8221; said Kimura.<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2019 report, Hawaiian Electric acknowledged the need to take more action to\u200c mitigate fire risk following one of Maui&#8217;s worst fire seasons. In\u2062 2015, the state enacted a groundbreaking law mandating that its grid be powered \u200dby 100% renewable energy by 2045. In 2021, regulators implemented a comprehensive restructuring of the regulatory framework to guide this transition, offering Hawaiian Electric significant incentives for completing green\u2062 energy projects on time and imposing fines for missed deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to look at the scope\u200c and scale of the transformation within [Hawaiian Electric] that was occurring \u2062throughout the system,&#8221; said Mina Morita, the former chair of the state utilities commission. &#8220;While there was concern for \u2064wildfire risk, politically the focus was on electricity generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although Hawaiian \u200dElectric submitted\u2063 a plan to the Hawaii Public\u200d Utilities Commission last year, outlining a $190 million investment\u200c in \u2062projects on Maui to address fire risks and \u2063improve the island&#8217;s aging electrical infrastructure, the implementation has been delayed pending approval to increase rates on customers.
