Reasonable&#8217; Schedule<\/h2>\n<p>In response to \u2064the Department of Justice\u2019s\u200c suggested start\u2062 date\u2062 of Jan. 2, 2024\u200d \u2014 in the middle of \u2062a presidential \u2063election that\u2019s sure to make\u200d history, no matter how\u2063 it goes \u2014 for former President Donald\u200d Trump\u2019s alleged \u2064efforts to prevent a\u200d transfer of power from himself to President-elect \u2064Joe Biden in the aftermath of the contentious\u200c 2020 election, Trump\u2019s\u200c legal team has\u200c put forth a\u2064 schedule \u200cthat it\u2062 considers \u201cmore reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a trial date in the middle of the election, Trump\u2019s attorneys\u2062 have\u200b suggested that \u200bjury selection not begin until more than two years later \u2014 in April of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Much\u200d of their reasoning behind the later date has to do with the amount\u200b of time the \u200bfederal \u200cgovernment has spend investigating the former president and the huge volume of records it has submitted to the court as evidence.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis more reasonable schedule \u200c\u2014 equal to the government\u2019s time spent investigating \u2014 will allow this case to \u2063proceed in an orderly fashion, with both parties having a fair opportunity to \u200dreview\u200c all material information, advance appropriate motions, and apprise the Court of relevant \u2063legal issues,\u201d the document, titled \u201cResponse in Opposition to Government\u2019s Proposed \u2064Trial Calendar\u201d said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Special Counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jack-smith-got-access-trumps-direct-messages-location-data-despite-twitters-roadblocks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Smith<\/a>\u2019s team has already provided 11.5 million \u200bpages of discovery material to the\u2062 defendant\u2019s team,\u200b with more possibly to come in the future.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNonetheless, even assuming we could begin reviewing the documents today, we \u2062would need to proceed at a pace of 99,762 pages per\u2063 day to finish the government\u2019s initial production\u2062 by its\u200b proposed date for jury selection,\u201d Trump\u2019s \u200bteam\u2063 said, trying to make that enormous\u2064 number comprehensible. \u201cThat is\u2063 the entirety of Tolstoy\u2019s War and Peace, cover to cover, 78 times a day, every day, from \u2062now\u2064 until jury \u200cselection.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, Trump is involved in a number of \u200cother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trumps-georgia-indictment-escalated-federal-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal proceedings<\/a> that will require his time \u2063and presence, \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4157944-trump-proposing-april-2026-trial-in-federal-jan-6-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump already has a \u2062packed court schedule as well, with\u200c a New \u200bYork civil \u2062trial scheduled \u200cfor October, a defamation trial scheduled for January, a New York criminal\u200d case scheduled \u2063for March and a federal case in Florida scheduled for May,\u201d\u2064 the outlet reported. \u201cFulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has also asked for a March trial date \u200cafter a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-border-city-woman-accused-of-running-underage-sex-trafficking-operation-for-23-years\/\" title=\"Texas Border City Woman Accused of Running Underage Sex Trafficking Operation for 23 Years\">grand jury handed<\/a> up\u200c an \u200cindictment against the former president and 18 others earlier this week\u200c over their efforts to \u200doverturn the\u2062 2020 election results in Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arguing for a trial date at the beginning of next year, prosecutors seemed to indicate that they felt it\u2062 was important\u2063 for\u200b the court\u2019s ultimate decision to be rendered prior to the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/major-warning-sign-emerges-biden-2024-campaign-heats-whistling-past-graveyard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presidential \u200belection<\/a>, presumably because it\u200c could influence some voters.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c[A] January 2 trial date would vindicate the public\u2019s strong interest in a speedy trial \u2014 an\u2062 interest \u200cguaranteed by the Constitution and federal law in all \u2063cases, but of particular significance here, where the defendant, a\u2064 former president, is charged with \u2063conspiring to overturn the legitimate \u2063results of the 2020 presidential election, obstruct the certification of the election results, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-attempts-to-push-federal-trial-in-d-c-back-until-2026\/\" title=\"Trump seeks to delay federal trial in D.C. until 2026.\">discount citizens\u2019 legitimate votes<\/a>,\u201d\u2062 they said, according\u2064 to The Hill.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-lawyer-make-ingenious-request-trial-take-curtain-away-americans-get-see-happening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump\u2019s team<\/a> agreed with\u2063 the importance of a speedy trial, \u2064but argued for \u2062a \u2062different definition\u2063 of \u201cspeedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe government\u2019s objective is clear:\u2062 to deny President Trump and \u200dhis counsel a fair ability to prepare for trial,\u201d they argued in the filing. \u201cThe Court should deny\u200b the government\u2019s request. The public interest lies in justice and fair \u2064trial, not a rush to\u2063 judgment.
