In this series,\u200c Up For Debate, the\u200c Washington Examiner will\u200b look at a key issue or policy every day up until debate day and\u2062 where key candidates stand.\u2062 Today&#8217;s story will\u200d examine transgender identity.<\/p>\n<h3>The Contentious\u200d Transgender Debate<\/h3>\n<p>The \u200bdebate over \u200cwhat to do with people who claim transgender identity has become one\u2063 of the most \u200cfractious in the country and \u200bis set to be a contentious topic of debate in the 2024 electoral cycle.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u200b the 2024 Republican presidential\u2062 primary field \u200cappears nearly unified in its rejection of many aspects of the transgender issue, especially medical and\u200c social interventions for children and biological men competing in female sports.<\/p>\n<h3>Up For Debate: Where Trump, DeSantis, and Rest \u200dof\u200c Republican 2024 Field Stand on Key Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Some 20 states have enacted bans on both medical interventions for children \u2063and sports.\u2063 The transgender \u2062debate\u2064 has struck a chord, touching on issues including humanism, morality, biology, and mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bissue exploded onto the national political\u200c scene, thanks in part to an \u2062infamous school board meeting \u2064arrest\u2063 of Loudoun\u200c County, Virginia, father Scott Smith in 2021. Smith&#8217;s daughter was raped by a boy wearing a skirt who was allowed to use the girls&#8217; restroom because of the district&#8217;s transgender policy. Many Americans caught a glimpse of the ideological infrastructure that had been set \u2064up seemingly \u2062under their noses.<\/p>\n<p>Schools across the country, parents \u200cfound \u200dout, were secretively allowing children to change \u200ctheir names, pronouns, clothing, and identities in schools. Moreover, doctors and other medical professionals not \u200donly advocate in \u200bfavor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arkansas-passes-save-adolescents-from-experimentation-act-to-ban-trans-surgery-puberty-blockers-for-minors\/\" title=\"Arkansas Passes \u2018Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act\u2019 To Ban Trans Surgery, Puberty Blockers For Minors\">gender transition procedures<\/a>\u200b for children, but in many cases lock parents out of the decision-making process entirely.<\/p>\n<p>The backlash brought on a phenomenon\u2064 in which elected officials began \u200dquestioning the insistence of American doctors who, as \u200cseveral state attorneys general have said, use the so-called &#8220;gender-affirming \u200dcare&#8221; model \u200cas a &#8220;cure \u2063du jour for pediatric\u2062 gender dysphoria&#8221; in spite of mounting evidence questioning its efficacy and safety.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to\u2064 restrooms, sports, and medical\u200b interventions, military service\u2062 is another\u200b major question for the transgender \u200ddebate, including whether transgender-identifying members should be allowed to serve and whether taxpayer dollars should fund transition surgeries, as planned by the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<h3>Donald Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Former President\u2064 Donald Trump has come out strongly in favor of national bans against biological\u200b men in women&#8217;s sports\u2063 and genital mutilation and chemical castration for children, which he calls &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-pledges-to-end-left-wing-gender-insanity-on-day-one\/\" title=\"Donald Trump Pledges To End \u2018Left-Wing Gender Insanity\u2019 On Day One\">left-wing gender insanity<\/a>&#8221; and \u200b&#8221;child abuse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No serious country should be telling its children that they were born with the wrong gender \u2064\u2014 a concept that was never heard of\u2062 in all of human history \u2014 nobody\u2019s ever heard of this, what\u2019s happening today,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;It was all when\u2062 the \u200cradical left \u200binvented it\u2062 just a few years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His policy plan is extensive and includes \u200ban \u200dexecutive order\u2062 to &#8220;cease all programs that promote the concept of sex and gender\u2064 transition \u2062at any age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It also\u200b includes a national law banning child genital mutilation, the termination of Medicaid and Medicare programs for participating hospitals and healthcare providers, supporting the right for victims of the\u200d procedures to sue doctors, and eliminating federal funding for schools that suggest &#8220;to a\u200d child that they could be trapped in the wrong body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump also calls\u2062 for \u200da Department of Justice investigation into pharmaceutical companies\u2063 and hospital \u2063networks to find if they have\u2062 &#8220;deliberately\u200c covered up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/up-for-debate-trump-desantis-and-other-2024-gop-hopefuls-stances-on-transgender-issues\/\" title=\"Transgender issues: Trump, DeSantis, and 2024 GOP hopefuls' viewpoints debated.\">horrific\u2063 long-term side-effects<\/a> of &#8216;sex transitions.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump also\u200d wants only male \u200band female sexes to \u200cbe recognized by the U.S. government and \u200dsays he will ask \u200bCongress to clarify that Title IX bars men from competing against women in sports.<\/p>\n<p>When Trump \u200dwas in the Oval \u200bOffice, he placed restrictions on \u200btransgender-identifying \u200dpersonnel from serving in the military and receiving taxpayer-funded medical transitions. While President Joe Biden rescinded the plan, earlier this month, Trump vowed to reinstate it.<\/p>\n<h3>Ron DeSantis<\/h3>\n<p>Florida governor Ron \u2064DeSantis\u200d has focused on transgender issues \u200bduring his governorship, in many ways making Florida the national state leader \u2062on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The perspective from Florida\u2064 is also often how his national presidential campaign decides to message on\u200b the issue, stopping\u200b short of specifying a \u2064role for the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Governor DeSantis has led the way in\u200c protecting children from harmful mutilation in the name of radical gender ideology,&#8221; DeSantis campaign press secretary Bryan Griffin told the Washington Examiner. &#8220;It is illegal in Florida to perform sex changes on children or\u200c give them chemical hormone or puberty blocker treatments for gender dysphoria.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis also barred biological men\u2062 from competing in women&#8217;s sports and from using facilities such as restrooms and locker rooms in Florida.\u2064 On national\u200c policy, DeSantis\u200c told host Megyn Kelly that as president, his administration would &#8220;look within the constitutional \u2064authority and federal government&#8221; \u200dto try to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Republican has \u2063vowed\u200d to revoke Biden&#8217;s executive order on transgender military service while backing a Trump-style restriction.<\/p>\n<h3>Tim Scott<\/h3>\n<p>Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) has been vocal on the\u200d issue, particularly as it relates to parental rights and\u2063 sports.<\/p>\n<p>The Scott campaign told the Washington Examiner that the South Carolina Republican is opposed to sex changes for minors.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, he\u2062 introduced \u200ca bill in the Senate that would\u2064 cut off\u200d federal funding to \u200cschools that do not obtain parental consent before using a &#8220;preferred pronoun&#8221; or name for a student.<\/p>\n<p>Scott talks often about the transgender issue in terms of sports specifically, saying at a town hall event with Fox News&#8217;s\u200b Sean Hannity that &#8220;transgender ideology is ruining women&#8217;s sports, and we have to put an end to that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Biological men should compete against biological men. Period, end of conversation,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>The Palmetto State\u2063 senator&#8217;s position on transgender people in the military is unclear, and his campaign did not respond to a request for comment on the position.<\/p>\n<h3>Nikki Haley<\/h3>\n<p>Former \u2063South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley supports banning gender transition procedures for children and biological men from competing against \u2062women in sports.<\/p>\n<p>Like her fellow\u2064 South Carolinian Scott, Haley also frequently speaks about the transgender issue in terms of sports, with limited discussion about medical interventions, \u200dbesides her campaign confirming to the Washington Examiner\u2062 that she is opposed to the procedures for\u2063 children.<\/p>\n<p>In an op-ed for National Review,\u200d Haley said: &#8220;President Biden is the latest man to do the rigging,\u200c which\u200d is strange coming from someone billed as a defender of women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In \u2062one of his\u2063 first acts as president, he signed an executive order paving the way\u200b for\u200c a \u200cfederal\u200b mandate that all schools receiving\u2063 federal funding let biological men play on women\u2019s sports teams,&#8221; the Palmetto State Republican continued. &#8220;The order was framed as a matter of transgender rights. But really, it was an attack on women\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haley, however, has said she would not support a ban on transgender military service, but did call out the Biden administration for having the military take &#8220;gender pronoun classes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Vivek Ramaswamy<\/h3>\n<p>Entrepreneur and political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy is on\u200d par with \u2062Trump with how outspoken he is about transgender issues.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy would ban all genital mutilation\u200c and chemical castration for children, campaign spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told \u200dthe \u2064Washington Examiner. He is\u200c also totally opposed\u2063 to biological men competing in women&#8217;s sports.<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin said Ramaswamy \u200dregards transgender identity as a &#8220;delusion&#8221; \u200dand a &#8220;social contagion,&#8221; using that as the source for many of his policy positions on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy calls requests from people to use their\u2063 &#8220;preferred&#8221; pronoun, restroom, and locker room\u2063 usage &#8220;tyranny \u2062of the minority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are two\u2062 genders and we are not going to change our\u200b society&#8221; for a &#8220;very small subset of people who are actually infecting the minds \u2062of a lot\u200d of young people,&#8221; McLaughlin said. &#8220;Don&#8217;t infect\u2063 the rest of the culture with your delusions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy said the U.S. does not need \u2062to institute a ban on members of the military because there is already a ban on serving with mental health disorders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you suffer \u2064from delusions,\u200b you cannot serve in\u200d the military,&#8221; McLaughlin added.<\/p>\n<h3>Others<\/h3>\n<p>Former Vice President Mike Pence has called for a \u2062Trump-style restriction on transgender military service, as well as a federal ban on transgender medical interventions \u2062for children.<\/p>\n<p>Former \u2063Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed legislation barring boys from using girls&#8217; restrooms in school in response to an Obama administration directive, as well as moving Arkansas to becoming the second state in the country to ban transgender athletes. He also supports state-level actions on banning surgeries for children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a sad testament that such legislation\u200d is even needed,&#8221; Hutchinson told the Washington Examiner. &#8220;But until sanity prevails, I will do everything I can to protect children and parents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Doug \u2064Burgum (R-ND)\u2062 has signed bans in North Dakota for transgender medical interventions for children, opposite-sex bathroom\u200b use, transgender athletes, and preferred\u200c pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie came out against bans on genital mutilation and \u200dchemical castration for children.
