In the original story,\u2062 the angel Aziraphale (Michael \u2063Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David \u200bTennant) team up \u200cto\u2064 stop Armageddon after Crowley accidentally \u200dmisplaces the baby \u200dAntichrist.<\/p>\n<h3>If you\u2019re wondering\u2062 how to get a sequel\u200b from that, well, the\u2064 writers of this season had the same problem.<\/h3>\n<p>They settled\u2063 for replaying \u2064hits from the first season,\u200b only with no one knowing what \u200dwas going on. An amnesiac Gabriel \u200b(Jon Hamm) shows \u200cup at Aziraphale\u2019s London bookshop with both angels \u2064and \u200ddemons hunting for him. Hijinks, or\u200d at least a facsimile of them, once again\u2062 ensue as\u200d Aziraphale and Crowley try to \u2064hide Gabriel and figure out what the hell (or heaven) \u2062is going on.\u2064 Along the way, there are a few flashbacks (e.g., the\u2062 book of Job \u200cis turned\u200d into\u200c a farce), some \u200dbad CGI, a lot of LGBT stuff (of course),\u200b and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/good-omens-2-goes-bad-by-blaspheming-christianity-and-comedy\/\" title=\"'Good Omens 2' Offends with Irreverent Christianity and Humor\">eventual big reveal<\/a> that is pure cringe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1127353913\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5e8a0a2d884924dda5f23c00cbbee091 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5e8a0a2d884924dda5f23c00cbbee091\"><\/div>\n<p>The \u200cactors are \u2064generally fine, but \u200dthe \u200cpacing is off, the jokes \u200care flat, and the earnest\u2064 bits just make the viewer feel embarrassed for everyone \u2064involved. I suspect Gaiman wrote \u200dnothing for this\u2062 except when it came \u200ctime to sign the back of each check. In short, \u201cGood Omens\u201d has gone bad. The earnestness was the worst part. A comedy can\u2064 earn \u200dthe right \u2063to be earnest\u200b \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vH3-Gt7mgyM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end<\/a> of \u201cBlackadder Goes Forth\u201d is an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/18010087.brilliant-sad-end-blackadder-thirty-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">example<\/a> of \u2062this\u2064 \u2014 but \u201cGood Omens 2\u201d doesn\u2019t come close to that level of rapport\u2064 with the audience. It doesn\u2019t have \u200benough emotional heft\u2062 (which can be established\u2062 through good comedy)\u200d to provoke sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>And earnestness is \u2064an especially poor fit because the \u200dworld of \u201cGood\u2062 Omens\u201d \u2064is essentially Lovecraftian with a \u2063lighter touch. God is inscrutable and absent, with the \u200bangels consequently degenerating into bureaucracy while trying to implement a\u200d divine\u2062 plan they don\u2019t understand. Mankind is clueless as powers\u2063 beyond our comprehension\u2063 blunder about plotting to destroy each \u200bother \u2064and us.<\/p>\n<p>As this illustrates, the original book and show \u200bwere to actual\u200c Christianity what the Thor movies are \u200bto Norse\u200c mythology.\u200b But the story had just\u200c enough connection (and \u200cgood enough writers) to be funny and \u2064maybe even prompt a few worthwhile reflections. Its merit\u200d was\u2064 rooted in the Christianity \u2062it treated as fodder for\u200b jokes \u2014 and in fairness, Christian end-times fiction is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-considering-investigations-into-hunter-fauci-and-others-after-midterms\/\" title=\"Republicans Considering Investigations Into Hunter, Fauci and Others After Midterms\">target-rich environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While any sequel would inevitably struggle to top stopping Armageddon, the overall premise still \u2063has\u2064 a great \u2064deal of potential for both humor and pathos. Humans caught between\u200b angels and demons in a cosmos from which God has seemingly withdrawn could certainly \u2063make for some good stories and some good (probably dark) comedy. Unfortunately, the \u2063writers had no idea\u2062 how to\u200b use this setup, and no message better than suggesting\u2064 that \u200cheaven and hell should make love,\u200c not war. It\u2019s just \u2064banal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cc3e68b193af74bf4db75b4d5960c21a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cc3e68b193af74bf4db75b4d5960c21a\"><\/div>\n<p>The decline from the \u2063original story \u200cto the sequel is representative of\u2063 the malaise of post-Christian culture \u200band art. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-15-most-anticipated-albums-of-2021\/\" title=\"The 15 Most Anticipated Albums of 2021\u00a0\">creative force<\/a> unleashed by the cultural and \u200dtechnological changes of the last century has been exhausted in just a few decades.\u2064 As\u200b postmodernity\u2019s connection (even as an \u2063antagonist) to the prior Christian culture withers, so does\u2062 its creative force.\u200b This\u200b show is just one \u2062more\u200b example of\u200b there not being enough cultural \u200cjuice left to produce great art or even much good entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Good art\u200c has to be true to the human condition, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-the-romanticize-your-life-tik-tok-trend-is-a-gen-z-rejection-of-postmodernism\/\" title=\"How The \u2018Romanticize Your Life\u2019 Tik Tok Trend Is a Gen Z Rejection Of Postmodernism\">contemporary culture<\/a> has no idea what the human\u200d condition is. And because we\u200d do not\u200c understand ourselves and our situation, we are \u2064also incapable\u2063 of understanding those \u200cwho are\u2063 different \u2062from us.\u200d This\u200c is\u200b why shows with vastly different settings and\u2063 characters all end up being \u200dmore or \u200bless the same. The writers have\u2062 nothing \u200dbut the \u200csame\u200d insipid, stale tropes to repeatedly \u2063rehash, whether they are writing for angels, demons,\u2062 elves, dwarves, 19th-century Londoners, or \u2063modern New Yorkers. And so everyone thinks and sounds \u200cinterchangeable, regardless \u200bof the costumes and the CGI layered on\u200b top.<\/p>\n<p>There is no\u200b easy fix for this. Artists \u2014 a\u200b category that might generously\u2064 include the writers of Amazon TV shows\u2062 \u2014 cannot \u200dwill themselves into belief just so they can be better at their craft. And they are not \u200btotally devoid of dogmas, but so-called diversity, \u2064equity, and inclusion are not really enough\u2063 to live on, let \u2064alone create anything worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>And these little orthodoxies \u2064are a\u200b terrible\u200b fit for the cosmos of \u201cGood Omens,\u201d with angels blundering and demons scheming while God is out to lunch \u2014 a world that makes one \u2063long to\u200c be alone in\u2064 an\u200b uncaring universe. Terror and tragedy \u2062fit this, as \u2062do absurdist gallows humor, as in\u200b the original \u2062story. The doctrines of \u200cCaitlyn in\u2062 HR do not. \u2062Even if we accept \u201cGood \u200bOmens 2\u201d as fundamentally mocking\u2064 religion (which is likely), the show is not funny or engaging\u200d enough for the \u200ccritique to\u200b land, and the proposed alternative is just woke cringe. Viewers might forgive \u201cGood Omens \u200c2\u201d<em> <\/em>for\u200d dispensing \u2062with the divine \u200cbut not for forgoing comedy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8874a835844de2b2a37331d1c6651ee9 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8874a835844de2b2a37331d1c6651ee9\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-aaeb277ad32938c177a92fc21087e918 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-aaeb277ad32938c177a92fc21087e918\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>the end of the world. However, &#8220;Good Omens 2&#8221; fails to capture the charm and wit of its predecessor. The plot feels lackluster and the humor falls flat.
