The drab series completely misses the point and strips the show \u2062of all the charisma, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-koch-soros-crackup\/\" title=\"The Koch-Soros Crackup\">interpersonal drama<\/a>, sense of \u200dplace, \u2063humor \u2014 even \u2064the colors \u2014 that made the original\u2062 so engrossing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1591056451\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ed64d4ec50a0932e2ec0acbf2ca0d23 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ed64d4ec50a0932e2ec0acbf2ca0d23\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cJustified\u201d brought a reluctant Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens back to his hometown\u2063 of\u200b Harlan, Kentucky, to \u200cthe poverty-ridden hollers, farms, and abandoned coal \u2063mines, where he was fluent in the\u200c customs and language \u200bof\u2062 the locals. \u201cJustified: City Primeval\u201d \u2064inverts that formula,\u2064 dropping Raylan in the alien world of Detroit, like some contemporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=erIn_2cVWp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walt Coogan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, other than a couple of perfunctory street scenes, the viewer is\u200d denied any\u2064 real sense of \u2062that city (and yes,\u200c I know \u2063the original was shot in California) or its inhabitants or, really, why Raylan is in town at\u2064 all. \u201cJustified: City Primeval\u201d could have been set\u2064 in Dayton or \u2062Jacksonville. Not even the homicidal \u201cOklahoma Wildman\u201d \u2014 played with spirit by Boyd Holbrook \u2064\u2014 is from\u2064 the city.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bplot revolves around a \u200bpsychopath, a murdered judge, a notebook filled with the names of\u2062 crooked officials, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-president-trump-gives-pardons-to-73-individuals-and-commutes-another-70-sentences-steve-bannon-is-included\/\" title=\"BREAKING: President Trump Gives Pardons to 73 Individuals and Commutes Another 70 Sentences \u2013 Steve Bannon Is Included\">defense lawyer<\/a>, and the\u2063 Albanian mob (the less consequential\u200b the country, the \u2062more menacing its gangsters, apparently.) The bad guy resembles\u200c one of those Dixie Mafia thugs Raylan\u2064 so easily dispensed with in the first series. But \u200chonestly, that makes the\u200d show sound far \u2062more\u2062 riveting than it \u200ddeserves. \u2063\u201cJustified: City Primeval\u201d is basically a \u201cvery\u2062 special\u201d multi-episode \u2064\u201cLaw &#038; Order:\u200b Detroit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/media-fact-checkers-twist-themselves-in-knots-defending-bidens-town-hall-disaster\/\" title=\"Media Fact-Checkers Twist Themselves In Knots Defending Biden\u2019s Town Hall Disaster\">real mystery<\/a> is why \u2064Raylan is in the show at all. Though he\u2019s far too sophisticated to act like a\u2064 clueless hick, it \u200ddoesn\u2019t mean he\u200c isn\u2019t in the wrong place. He\u2019s <em>definitely<\/em> in \u2064the\u2063 wrong place. Raylan is superfluous to the plot of the show, shoehorned in as if he were making a string of cameos. Sure, the writers try ginning up some tension by creating a personal grudge between\u2062 Raylan and \u201cOklahoma Wildman,\u201d\u2064 who briefly menaces\u200c the deputy marshal\u2019s daughter \u2014 played by Timothy Olyphant\u2019s real daughter Vivian. \u2064Then\u2063 there is an affair between Raylan and the ambitious defense lawyer (played \u200cby\u2062 Aunjanue Ellis, who does as well as \u2062can be\u200c expected.) \u200cIt is all really\u200b a tendentious effort to make\u200b you care.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2136b55b39cc5e7c7bffd4f96050c1f6 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2136b55b39cc5e7c7bffd4f96050c1f6\"><\/div>\n<p>Gone, though, are Art, Ava, Arlo, Dickie, Dewey, \u200dDuffy, Ellen \u2063May, Limehouse, Mags, Mike \u2026\u2064 and you get the \u2063point. Most \u2063noticeably\u2062 gone is Boyd. Recall that \u2063Walton Goggins\u2019 Boyd Crowder played so well with test audiences of the \u2063pilot, \u201cFire \u200cin the Hole,\u201d that \u200dproducers felt compelled to bring him back even after Raylan, a \u200bfriend he\u2019d once saved from sure death in a mine shaft,\u200b shot him in the chest.<\/p>\n<p>The writers should have sprung Boyd \u200cfrom\u2064 federal prison and \u2064driven \u2063him to Detroit. Then again, \u200ca \u2062spinoff featuring Boyd\u2062 holding court in\u2062 prison would\u2063 have been immeasurably \u2062more entertaining than watching Raylan moping\u200b around with his wings clipped like some bean-counting consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the\u200d original series\u2062 wasn\u2019t perfect television \u2014 it\u200d took a couple of seasons to\u2062 find its footing, not uncoincidentally when Boyd began getting a larger role. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UrpyJzAq7Ro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opening scene<\/a>, the ultimatum and shooting of Tommy Bucks,\u2063 the audience is introduced \u200cto the earnest, deadly confidence of\u200b Raylan, who functions \u2064 <em>nearly<\/em> outside \u2064the law but always on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/justified-city-primeval-is-worse-than-bad-its-boring\/\" title=\"'Justified: City Primeval' is not just bad, it's painfully dull.\">solid moral high ground<\/a>. You couldn\u2019t stop watching.<\/p>\n<p>But it was \u200c\u201cJustified\u2019s\u201d finale that was perfect, and what I think makes this sequel especially infuriating. \u200dAfter years of deadly entanglements \u2014\u200d and \u200coccasional friendship \u2014 a contemporary\u2063 Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid sit\u200b across\u200b from each\u200b other, \u2063speaking through \u200cthe glass\u2062 of a jailhouse visiting\u2062 room, just as you knew they would. Raylan is there to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rVoD6E3Ip5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliver some (fake) news<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8a0efcacc71bf1b14121adfc3d55a599 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8a0efcacc71bf1b14121adfc3d55a599\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Raylan<\/strong>: You \u200casking why I came? I\u2063 thought it was news that should be delivered in person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boyd:<\/strong> That \u200bthe only reason? After all these long years, Raylan Givens, that\u2019s the only reason.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Raylan:<\/strong> Well, I suppose \u200bif I allow myself to be sentimental, despite all that has\u2064 occurred, \u2063there is \u200done thing that I \u2064wander\u2064 back to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boyd:<\/strong> We\u200d dug coal together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Raylan:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re going to keep the story going after that ending, it better be \u200dgreat. Either of those scenes is infinitely more compelling than the whole of \u201cJustified: City Primeval.\u201d And yet, I keep watching because <em>surely<\/em> by episode eight\u2019s finale, Raylan will do something worth watching. This lackluster series fails to capture the charm, intense relationships, setting, humor, and more that made the original so great.
