This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nobody-asked-for-this-wga-members-disagree-with-writers-room-minimums-a-key-issue-of-strike\/\" title=\"WGA Members Reject 'Writers Room Minimums,' A Crucial Strike Concern: 'Nobody Wanted This'\">includes providing streaming viewership data<\/a>, per <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/biz\/news\/writers-strike-screenwriters-oppose-staff-mininum-1235694323\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a>. But they have not come to an \u2062agreement when it comes to having a set minimum \u200dnumber of writers on every \u2062project, regardless of \u2063what showrunners determine they need.<\/p>\n<p>The initial stipulation said that TV shows needed a minimum of six \u2063to 12 writers depending on the number of episodes in a season.\u2064 This month\u2063 the WGA agreed to reduce\u200d that number by one\u2064 writer but would \u200dnot do away with the idea of writers room minimums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody asked for this,\u201d one anonymous showrunner told the \u2064outlet. \u201cEvery showrunner I know is against this. It doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nothing-about-this-election-seems-to-add-up-the-liberty-loft\/\" title=\"Nothing about this election seems to add up | The Liberty Loft\">make sense<\/a> to anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the showrunners that\u2064 want a staff \u200bshould be given a staff. I don\u2019t think\u2063 it\u2019s important to \u2063force those few that don\u2019t want a staff to have a staff,\u201d a writer agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need that many \u2063writers,\u201d another showrunner\u200c said. \u201cI don\u2019t want some\u2063 people coming in who have been mandated \u2026 If I\u2019m forced to\u2062 hire two or \u2062three more people, they will be seen as\u2062 a burden by other people in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some dissenters \u2063said the minimums\u2064 would likely result in \u201cfeatherbedding,\u201d which involves hiring employees \u200dwho \u2062don\u2019t work to\u200d fulfill labor quotas.<\/p>\n<p>One writer said something \u200csimilar happened to him in the past. \u201cIt\u2019s \u2064an awful thing to\u200c go to work every \u200dday and know you\u2019re being paid to sit around and do nothing. It doesn\u2019t actually help your career long-term,\u201d he \u2063said. \u201cI \u200cthink that people think they\u200b want these guaranteed jobs. But from my experience, they really don\u2019t. It\u2019s a poisoned chalice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most \u2063creators \u2062haven\u2019t spoken out publicly about their thoughts on writer minimums. But \u201cYellowstone\u201d \u200bcreator Taylor Sheridan, who writes all the episodes by himself, did address the concept\u2064 during a June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/taylor-sheridan-yellowstone-interview-1235519261\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with The \u200dHollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe freedom of \u200bthe artist to create must \u2062be unfettered,\u201d the showrunner \u200csaid. \u201cIf they tell me, \u2018You\u2019re going \u200dto have to write a check for $540,000 to\u200b four people to sit in a room that \u200dyou never have to meet,\u2019 \u200dthen that\u2019s between the studio and \u2062the guild. But if I have to check in creatively\u200b with others for a story I\u2019ve wholly\u200c built in my brain, that would probably be the end of me telling TV stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Another anonymous showrunner who spoke to Variety said \u200dhaving a mandated number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democracy-dies-at-the-hands-of-taylor-lorenz-and-every-other-bad-hire-at-the-washington-post\/\" title=\"Democracy Dies At The Hands Of Taylor Lorenz And Every Other Bad Hire At The Washington Post\">writers led<\/a> to a\u2062 \u201ctoo many cooks\u201d situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you think of some of the most creatively daring shows on TV, many of them \u2062have been written by a single writer,\u201d the showrunner said. \u201cThe more distinct the voice is, the better the show becomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the union members think \u2064support for that particular stipulation comes from a fear\u2064 of losing work. \u201cWhen all is said and done, the estimates are that the number of working TV writers is probably going to shrink by 30-40%,\u201d the writer who referred to a \u201cpoisoned chalice\u201d \u2064said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are scared. People who staffed once in 2020 or 2019 and not since are really scared that they\u2019re\u200d not going to work again. They\u2019re right to be scared, because it\u2019s a game of musical chairs and people are taking the chairs away. This is being promoted as\u2064 a solution\u2062 to that.
