Their goal is to halt the enforcement\u2062 of a new law\u200b that prohibits the inclusion of Marxist ideology in classroom curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.li\/1URZJ#selection-1471.44-1471.101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Filed<\/a> in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida on Monday,\u200d the\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23910239\/complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> \u200cbrought by NCF Freedom Inc.\u200b and New College \u2064students and professors argues that SB 266, signed \u2064into law by Gov. \u2062Ron\u200b DeSantis in May, violates the First Amendment. They claim it &#8220;favors and permits speech \u200bwhich opposes ideas such as diversity,\u2062 equity and \u200dinclusion and social activism, etc. \u200bbut disfavors \u2063and censors speech which promotes those\u200b ideas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2023\/266\/?Tab=BillHistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SB 266<\/a>, Florida universities are <a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2023\/266\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibited<\/a> from teaching curriculum that &#8220;is based on theories\u2063 that systemic racism, \u2062sexism, oppression,\u2063 and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States\u200d and were created to maintain \u2063social, political, and economic inequities.&#8221; The law also \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/leftists-sue-new-college-of-florida-reformers-for-not-letting-them-indoctrinate-students-on-taxpayers-dime\/\" title=\"Leftists sue New College of Florida reformers for restricting their influence on students' education funded by taxpayers.\">prevents\u200b state colleges<\/a> from using taxpayer money to fund\u200c &#8220;diversity, equity, and \u200cinclusion&#8221; (DEI) programs.<\/p>\n<p>For context, \u2064DEI \u200dis an ideology that dismisses merit and instead discriminates based on \u200ccharacteristics such as skin \u200dcolor and sexual orientation.\u200c It prioritizes \u2064identity over qualifications, leading \u200cto\u200d the exclusion\u200b of individuals who \u200cmay be\u200c more qualified but don&#8217;t meet certain identity-based criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Manny Diaz Jr., the commissioner of the Florida State Board of Education,\u200b and the Florida Board\u200d of\u2064 Governors of the State University System are also named as defendants in\u2063 the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>In their\u200c lawsuit,\u200c NCF \u200bFreedom Inc. argues \u2063that \u2063SB 266\u2064 would likely prohibit or \u2064restrict various programs, majors, courses,\u2063 and textbooks\/assignments at New College. Examples include courses like &#8220;Queer \u200bHistory: \u200dSexuality in the 20th Century United States,&#8221; &#8220;Queer Studies,&#8221; and &#8220;Race, Gender and Sexuality.&#8221; They also express concerns about the\u2064 potential impact on the school&#8217;s\u2062 &#8220;hard sciences,&#8221; citing the Biology major&#8217;s class on &#8220;Sex, Gender, \u200cMind and Brain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New College of\u2064 Florida, historically\u2062 known for its \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-will-come-out-swinging-against-bidens-progressive-fed-nominee\/\" title=\"Republicans Will Come Out Swinging Against Biden\u2019s Progressive Fed Nominee\">left-wing leanings<\/a>, experienced a shift in leadership when \u2064Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed new\u2063 trustees with conservative views. Among them was Christopher Rufo,\u2062 a senior fellow \u200dat the Manhattan Institute known for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/61-twitter-accounts-you-should-be-following\/\" title=\"61 Twitter Accounts You Should Be Following\">exposing critical race theory<\/a> in \u2064U.S.\u200d public education.<\/p>\n<p>Since the \u200dnew conservative majority\u200d took\u2062 office, \u2064they \u2064have been implementing changes\u200b to align \u200dNew College with a more traditional approach.
