By maintaining \u2062endangered species protections on \u2064the\u2064 growing bear population, Washington lawmakers are enabling the grizzlies\u200c to terrorize communities in the\u2063 West.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Grizzly bears are fascinating creatures.\u200c A bear\u2019s nose can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yose\/blogs\/bear-series-part-one-a-bears-sense-of-smell.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detect<\/a> anything from an animal carcass to a Snickers bar stuffed inside a backpack up\u2064 to 20 miles away. With an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bearsmart.com\/blog\/7-little-known-grizzly-bear-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intake<\/a> of up to 90 pounds of food\u200d per \u2062day, they can \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwf.org\/Educational-Resources\/Wildlife-Guide\/Mammals\/Grizzly-Bear#:~:text=Grizzly%20bears%20weigh%20upward%20of,in%20the%20lower%2D48%20States.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow<\/a> up\u2063 to 700 pounds, run \u200cup \u200cto 35 \u2063miles an hour, climb \u200cinto the tree\u2064 canopy, and swim through alpine streams with remarkable efficiency. As kings \u2063of the food chain, they help sustain beautiful ecosystems that attract tourists, \u2062which \u200ccontribute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/national-park-visitor-spending-contributed-425-billion-us-economy-2021#:~:text=National%20Park%20Visitor%20Spending%20Contributed%20%2442.5%20Billion%20to%20U.S.%20Economy%20in%202021,-Spending%20supported%20322%2C600&#038;text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%93%20The%20Department%20of%20the,supported%20322%2C600%20mostly%20local%20jobs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">billions<\/a> \u2063to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-tale-of-two-depressions-the-forgotten-and-the-great\/\" title=\"A Tale of Two Depressions: The Forgotten and The Great\">national economy<\/a>. So it makes\u200d sense\u2063 that we would want to keep\u2062 their population thriving\u2063 for generations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1498773629\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-784d7e0f25598992620b6851048dc547 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-784d7e0f25598992620b6851048dc547\"><\/div>\n<p>But\u2063 grizzly bears are also among the most violent \u2064beasts in the American wilderness. Their jaws can clench with enough power to <a href=\"https:\/\/scoutlife.org\/video-audio\/166569\/ouch-10-animals-with-incredibly-strong-bites\/#:~:text=GRIZZLY%20BEAR,to%20crush%20a%20bowling%20ball.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crush<\/a> a\u2063 bowling \u200cball. Their claws can grow up to four \u200binches long and are sharp enough \u2062to tear into the flesh of those who dare \u200center grizzly territory.\u2063 In July, one woman from \u200cKansas <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/24\/amie-adamson-ided-as-hiker-killed-by-grizzly-at-yellowstone-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fell victim<\/a> to a bear attack \u200dnear Yellowstone National Park. <a href=\"https:\/\/a-z-animals.com\/blog\/how-many-grizzly-bear-attacks-happen-per-year\/#:~:text=Between%202020%20to%202022%2C%20there,there%20were%20seven%20fatal%20attacks.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eight<\/a> \u2064others were reportedly killed in bear attacks \u200din North America between \u200c2020\u200d and 2022. As the grizzly \u2063population rebounds, more conflicts \u2063are inevitable.<\/p>\n<h2>A \u2018Remarkable \u2063Recovery\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Grizzly bears \u200dhave been\u200b listed as a federally\u200c endangered\u200d species since 1975. The\u200c slow-reproducing bears, \u200dhowever, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/learn\/nature\/bearesa.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made<\/a> \u2062 a \u201cremarkable recovery\u201d over the prior five \u200ddecades, according to the National Park Service. Grizzlies in\u200b the\u200c Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem alone\u2063 ballooned from\u200d 136 the year\u200b they were listed to 1,063 counted last year. The current population is more than double the \u200cthreshold\u200c of 500\u2062 required to shed their endangered status, according to the \u2064criteria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2021%20GBRP%20Annual%20Report.pdf\">outlined <\/a>by the Fish and Wildlife Service.<\/p>\n<p>Grizzlies are now venturing well beyond the \u2063six designated ecosystems\u2064 where \u2063their populations were \u200cdestined to thrive,\u200d including Greater Yellowstone, Northern \u200cContinental Divide,\u200b Cabinet-Yaak, Bitterroot, Selkirk, and the \u200bNorth\u200d Cascades. Last \u2064month,\u200c High Country News ran a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcn.org\/articles\/bears-in-the-northern-rockies-grizzly-bears-are-on-the-move\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feature <\/a>on the grizzly rebound: \u201cIn the Northern Rockies,\u200d grizzly bears \u2064are on the move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday,\u200c grizzlies number just below 2,000\u200b in the lower 48,\u201d the \u200cmagazine reported. \u201cYellowstone\u2019s grizzlies have tripled their range in recent decades and are \u2064now moving north out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">national park<\/a>. Meanwhile, grizzlies in the Northern Continental Divide recovery\u2062 zone are heading south. The populations are now only \u2062about 50 miles apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a6c4d8642d1e3438098cd6a036dcb6fb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a6c4d8642d1e3438098cd6a036dcb6fb\"><\/div>\n<p>In\u200d the 1990s, \u2062scientists even transplanted Canadian grizzlies\u2063 into Montana, according \u200cto High Country \u2063News. The bears are now being spotted in places where sightings have not been reported in more than a century. Just this summer, a grizzly was \u2063reported roaming Montana\u2019s Pryor Mountains\u200b for the first time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideopenspaces.com\/first-grizzly-bear-spotted-in-montana-pryor-mountains-since-1800s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">200\u2063 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>A Grisly Threat<\/h2>\n<p>However remarkable, \u200dthe grizzly comeback\u200b presents \u2064a threat to\u200b livestock and humans. In 2021, Montana paid out $340,000 to compensate ranchers for livestock kills, mostly from \u2064grizzlies, up from\u200c $261,000 in 2019, \u200caccording to High Country News. In Wyoming, state officials <a href=\"https:\/\/oilcity.news\/community\/wyoming-community-2\/2022\/03\/07\/annual-game-and-fish-report-shows-increase-in-grizzly-captures-livestock-conflicts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> \u2062 that \u2063captures and relocations of\u200c problematic bears almost doubled from 2020 to 2021. The\u2064 bears\u2019 recovery has \u2064created\u2062 a nuisance \u2063for rural landowners\u200d now dealing with grizzlies encroaching \u2063on their land \u200dand ravaging livestock.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Thoman and her \u2063family \u200bhave been ranching in \u200bsouthwestern Wyoming for decades. \u200cSix years ago, \u200dThoman and her team sold\u2063 off \u200bgrazing allotments\u200b in the Bridger-Teton National Forest over\u200c myriad issues\u200d related to the grizzlies.\u2064 When asked \u200cwhat kinds \u2064of \u2062problems she \u200cfaced with \u2064grizzlies, Thoman was almost \u200doverwhelmed, \u201cI can\u2019t even begin to\u200c tell you.\u201d Put simply, \u201cit was a nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we were in the forest it \u200cwas every \u2062night,\u201d she said, that she saw grizzly\u2064 activity threaten livestock. One of Thoman\u2019s herders \u200cwas even attacked \u200dat night. He survived, she said, while \u200cqualifying the experience\u2063 as \u201ctraumatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2bc5d9c516b0c90f9f10fdb4adaad200 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2bc5d9c516b0c90f9f10fdb4adaad200\"><\/div>\n<p>Worse than\u2063 the bears, Thoman added, was the \u201cbureaucracy.\u201d The Forest Service began \u2062implementing constant rule changes delivered in the name of \u2063grizzly protection. Once \u2062Thoman complied with one order, she\u2019d be\u2064 hit with another, and \u2063then\u200d another and \u200canother, whether\u200b it had to do with fencing, food\u2063 storage, and camp cleanliness. \u201cEverything that we did voluntarily, they started making it a mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thoman was\u2063 even compelled to order GPS devices to prove she was compliant \u2064with \u2062the requirements to move fencing every night. The grizzly population in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-forest-service-sparked-new-mexico-wildfire\/\" title=\"U.S. Forest Service ignited NM wildfire.\">national\u2063 forest<\/a>, she said, was \u201ctotally saturated.\u201d \u200dEven though Thoman\u2063 is\u200c no \u200blonger \u201csurrounded by 10 grizzlies every night,\u201d the bears have started \u200cmoving south near where she lives in Sweetwater County.<\/p>\n<h2>Protections\u200c Remain<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, public comments recommended that officials with the National\u200c Park Service\u200c reintroduce wolves to Maryland and Virginia, states surrounding \u2064the District of Columbia, to control the local deer population. But, of course,\u200d officials \u200bfrom the park\u200d service, which is headquartered \u2063in D.C.,\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/local\/305\/2022\/04\/04\/1090929699\/why-don-t-we-reintroduce-wolves-to-d-c-to-curb-deer-overpopulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissed <\/a>the suggestion, citing risks to pets and \u200bchildren.<\/p>\n<p>While the Department\u2064 of the Interior was quick\u2063 to keep \u2062wolves out of Washington, the \u200bBiden administration has been slow\u200d to act \u2062on grizzlies \u200cterrorizing ranchers and livestock.\u2063 The Fish \u200cand Wildlife Service began \u2062to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/press-release\/2023-02\/service-initiate-grizzly-bear-status-review-northern-continental-divide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">review<\/a> the endangered status \u200cof grizzlies in Wyoming and Montana two years \u2062into the administration.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, radical environmentalists are engaged in a \u2063campaign to protect dangerous bears and let them multiply and spread \u200bacross rural\u200c America. In May, a \u200ccoalition of\u200b 31 conservation groups also sent letters \u200cto the Biden administration and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/letting-grizzlies-terrorize-ranchers-is-climate-crazies-next-anti-civilization-crusade\/\" title=\"Grizzlies' Uncontrolled Presence: Climate Activists' New Extremist Mission\">congressional lawmakers urging federal officials<\/a> \u2064to keep\u2062 grizzlies listed as endangered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong-term funding for electric\u200d fencing, carcass removal programs, range riders, and other \u200bmeasures can reduce depredation and protect livestock producers,\u201d they\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofthebitterroot.net\/ltrusdi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote <\/a>to the Interior secretary.<\/p>\n<p>But in her interview with The Federalist, Thoman\u200d said efforts to comply with existing regulations by the Forest Service were \u201calmost impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite reaching their bear \u200crecovery goals, congressional \u200bDemocrats and allied environmental\u2063 groups are fighting efforts to lift protections. Recent \u200befforts to delist \u2062grizzlies have \u200bbeen blocked by serial litigation while Democrats continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/09\/27\/congress-pushes-to-change-wildlife-law-after-blocked-bear-hunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">block<\/a> delisting\u2064 efforts on Capitol Hill. \u2063When the \u2062Trump administration tried\u2062 to delist \u200cthe bears in 2017, \u200ca federal judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/10\/us\/grizzly-bears-yellowstone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocked <\/a>the move.<\/p>\n<p>State and congressional \u200cRepublicans\u2064 argue\u2064 responsible management of\u2064 the\u200b booming \u200cbear \u200dpopulation is necessary to keep rural residents protected. In April, House Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/hageman.house.gov\/media\/in-the-news\/legislation-delist-grizzly-bears-mt-wy-moves-forward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moved forward<\/a> legislation brought by\u2062 lawmakers from Wyoming \u2064and Montana to delist\u200b grizzlies in \u200cthe Northern\u2064 Continental \u2063Divide and Greater Yellowstone ecosystems.
