Roy Cooper\u2019s veto of a \u200bbill that restricts discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in elementary schools\u2063 and expands parents\u2019 access\u2063 to information about their children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>\u201cParents\u2019 Bill\u2062 of Rights,\u201d<\/strong> which is now passed into\u200c law after both\u2063 chambers voted to \u2062override the veto, bans talk of sexual orientation and gender \u2064identity for students in kindergarten \u2063through fourth grade. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-carolina-legislature-overrides-democratic-governors-vetoes-of-transgender-bills\/\" title=\"NC Legislature overrides Dem Governor's vetoes of transgender bills.\">requires parental \u2064notification prior<\/a> to any changes in\u2064 a child\u2019s name or pronoun use at school, among other provisions.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP enjoys veto-proof supermajorities \u200cin both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly. Putting those majorities\u2062 to use on Aug. 16, Republicans in \u2063the Senate and House also overrode the governor\u2019s vetoes of two \u2064other bills related to transgender youth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"mb-4 mr-4 w-full max-w-[500px] border border-[#D3D3D3] px-5 py-4 text-[16px] leading-[20px] text-[#262626] md:float-left\">\n<div class=\"mb-3 font-sans text-[16px] font-semibold uppercase leading-[19px] text-[#2F2F2F]\">Related Stories<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"mb-1 line-clamp-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/21-year-old-sues-doctors-and-clinics-for-more-than-1-million-over-transgender-procedures-5422986\">21-Year-Old Sues Doctors \u2064and Clinics for More Than $1\u200d Million Over Transgender Procedures<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-[14px] leading-[18px] text-[#737373]\">7\/27\/2023<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"mb-1 line-clamp-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/bc-father-who-opposed-childs-gender-transition-celebrates-big-win-in-court-5455978\">BC Father Who Opposed Child&#8217;s Gender Transition Celebrates &#8216;Big Win&#8217; in Court<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-[14px] leading-[18px] text-[#737373]\">8\/10\/2023<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first of\u200c those bills was House Bill 574, or\u200c the <strong>\u201cFairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act,\u201d<\/strong> which bars biological males from joining girls\u2019 middle school, high \u200bschool,\u200b and college \u2062sports teams.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 second vote overrode Mr. Cooper\u2019s veto of \u200bHouse Bill 808, dubbed the <strong>\u201cYouth Health Protection Act.\u201d<\/strong> The bill prohibits \u200cmedical professionals from providing hormonal treatments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-judge-halts-investigations-into-parents-of-transgender-minors-for-child-abuse\/\" title=\"Texas Judge Halts Investigations Into Parents of Transgender Minors for Child Abuse\">puberty-suppressing drugs<\/a>, and\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/retired-nfl-player-calls-for-separate-transgender-category-of-sports-after-biden-executive-order\/\" title=\"Retired NFL Player Calls For Separate Transgender Category Of Sports After Biden Executive Order\">sex reassignment surgeries<\/a> for\u200d those under the age of 18, with \u200dlimited exceptions. \u2063The measure also bars\u2064 the use of state funds for such treatments.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina is the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> state\u200b to enact restrictions on sex \u200breassignment procedures for minors, though some of the other states\u2019 laws \u2063are tied \u200cup \u2063in court.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018No Place for\u2062 Politicians\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Initially passed by lawmakers \u2063in \u2064June, the three bills were \u2062dead on arrival on the governor\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>In vetoing them on July 5, Mr. Cooper denounced\u200b the measures as a\u200b political stunt Republicans\u200c were using to \u201cinvade the rights and responsibilities \u200cof parents and doctors, hurting vulnerable children, and damaging our state\u2019s\u2062 reputation and economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the legislature went over his\u2063 head on Aug. 16, the governor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NC_Governor\/status\/1691929422289342863\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed<\/a> \u2062 his outrage at the legislation as discriminatory and accused Republicans\u200c of having \u201cthe\u200b wrong priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the governor \u2062was not the bills\u2019 only critic.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Democratic state Rep. John Autry of Mecklenburg County, who has a transgender grandchild, was overcome with emotion\u2062 when he \u2064urged his colleagues to \u201cjust stop it\u201d\u200b before they \u2062voted 73-46 to enact\u2062 the <strong>\u201cYouth Protection Act.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Democratic state Rep. Marcia Morey\u200c of Durham County described the <strong>\u201cFairness in Women\u2019s \u200cSports Act\u201d<\/strong> \u200d as \u201cmean-spirited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not talking about world-class athletes, Olympic athletes, and someone\u2064 being deprived a medal,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re\u2064 talking about kids\u2014middle school, high school\u2014who\u2062 try to find their identity, who try to \u200cfind their reason to belong with\u200d others. Especially\u200c if they have gender \u2064identity issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis shouldn\u2019t be a law that the legislature passes,\u201d she added. \u201cLet the governing sports bodies pass \u200btheir regulations. They\u2019re much\u2064 more attuned to fairness in \u200bsports than politicians are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the House voted 74-45\u2062 to pass the\u2064 bill, followed by the Senate in a 27-18 vote.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Protecting Children<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite\u200c Democrats\u2019 protestations, proponents of the bills have argued that <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina&#8217;s GOP-controlled assembly defied Gov.
