They don\u2019t,\u201d Levi told the \u2062crowd according\u2063 to <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/zachary-levi-slams-garbage-coming-out-of-hollywood-fan-expo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHow many times do you watch \u2064a\u200b trailer and go, \u2018Oh my God, this looks so cool!\u2019 Then you go to the movie\u2062 and it\u2019s like, \u2018This was what\u200c I get?&#8217;\u201d Levi \u200bcomplained.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey \u2063know that once you\u2019ve already bought the ticket\u2064 and you\u2019re in the seat, they\u2019ve got your\u2062 money. And the only \u200cway for us to change any of it is to not go to the\u2062 garbage. We have to actively not \u2063choose the \u200cgarbage. It\u2019ll help. \u200cIt\u2019ll help \u2063a \u200blot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Levi\u2019s days \u200cas part of the DC Comics universe (DCEU) of films may already be numbered. A third installment of his\u200c \u201cShazam\u201d \u200dfilms seems \u200bunlikely\u200d since\u2063 the DCEU has \u2063made\u200d a major course correction, thrown\u2062 out all\u2062 its past films, and is \u2063intending to start fresh to try and tie them\u200d all together like Marvel did\u2062 with most of its films.<\/p>\n<p>Of \u2062course, \u2064the first installment of Levi\u2019s \u2064\u201cShazam\u201d film was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-shazam-bests-newcomers-with-25-1m-second-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surprise hit<\/a> \u2064 and\u2063 did well \u200cfinancially.<\/p>\n<p>The second, and\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dcs-gay-superhero-film-bombs-box-office-hollywood-running-excuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very woke<\/a>, \u201cShazam\u201d film, \u201cShazam! Fury of the Gods,\u201d though, was\u2064 torched by critics. So some of Levi\u2019s comments may be his sour grapes. But, he went on to \u2063point out \u2062that moviegoers liked\u2062 the film \u2062despite the\u200c vociferous naysaying of the critics.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe audience score is \u200dstill quite \u200cgood,\u2064 but the\u2063 critics\u2019 score \u200cwas, I \u2062don\u2019t know, very oddly and \u2062perplexingly low, and people\u2063 were insanely unkind,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/zachary-levi-blames-shazam-sequel-flop-haters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Levi said<\/a> of the film in July.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cListen, I\u2019ve\u200d been a \u200dpart of things and as much as I wish that \u2063they were good, I know that they\u2019re okay, I\u200c know they missed a lot. I\u2019m not saying \u201cShazam! Fury of\u2064 the Gods\u201d is some perfect Orson Welles masterpiece, but \u200cit\u2019s a good darn movie,\u201d he \u200bexclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>Levi \u200cis right about the \u2063ratings.\u2064 Fans\u2063 have \u2064given it a relatively upbeat 86 \u200bpercent fresh at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/shazam_fury_of_the_gods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, even as critics \u200chave rated it a dismal 49 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the film also only took in $57.64 million at the box office in \u200cthe U.S. \u200bwhich wasn\u2019t stupendous. On the\u2063 other\u200d hand, it \u2063topped out at $133.84 million worldwide. However, it probably \u200cjust\u200c missed breaking even from its $125 million \u200dbudget, and because of that, it was considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/barack-obama-picks-woke-box-office-flop-west-side-story-as-one-of-his-favorite-movies-of-2021\/\" title=\"Barack Obama Picks Woke Box Office Flop 'West Side Story' as One of His Favorite Movies of 2021\">box-office flop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 point is, \u200ceven as fans liked the film, it appears that\u200b there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-americans-rejecting-woke-hollywood-must-provide-better-alternative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fewer fans<\/a> interested in seeing it in the first place since its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/star-wars-may-the-fourth-tribute-excludes-disney-characters\/\" title=\"Star Wars May The Fourth Tribute Excludes Disney Characters\">box office total<\/a> was so disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-a-list-of-counties-reporting-issues-at-the-ballot-box-this-election-day\/\" title=\"Here\u2019s A List Of Counties Reporting Issues At The Ballot Box This Election Day\">news outlets began reporting<\/a> on Levi\u2019s \u200ccomments, \u200che ended up trying to \u200dwalk it back and claimed\u200b he was \u201ctaken out of \u200dcontext.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s come to my attention that an \u2063offhand\u2062 remark I made in jest last weekend is being taken out\u2062 of context,\u201d Levi said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2023\/08\/15\/zachary-levi-star-of-widely-derided-shazam-fury-of-the-gods-slams-hollywood-for-making-garbage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breitbart News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSo let me\u200c be very clear. I fully support my union, the WGA, and the strike \u2026 \u2062But we also cannot forget our fans during\u200b this strike. Fans that spend their money and energy traveling far distances to talk \u2062with us about our work that means so\u2064 much \u200dto \u200bthem, we should be able to engage,\u201d he tried to explain.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard \u2062to see how \u200canything was \u201ctaken out of context,\u201d \u200bbut\u2063 there you go.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever he \u201cmeant,\u201d Levi is\u200d basically right. Hollywood keeps putting out \u201cgarbage\u201d that fewer and fewer \u200bpeople are\u200c going \u200dto see. Ticket sales and attendance has been falling for\u2063 years, even as the \u201cblockbuster\u201d films do\u200b well. In fact, if it weren\u2019t for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordstudent.com\/2019\/04\/21\/how-superheros-revitalised-cinema-the-mcu-in-retrospect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel\u2019s \u2064films<\/a>, Hollywood would \u200dhave\u2064 seen much steeper declines over the past decade or so. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/general\/2022-box-office-2023-1234795871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IndieWire<\/a>, theater audiences fell by half over the last\u2063 four years alone (granted, some of that was during the pandemic hysteria).<\/p>\n<p>And with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/studios-wait-hollywood-strike-writers-losing-apartments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writers strike<\/a> still dragging on, there won\u2019t be a \u200bwhole lot new \u2063coming out next year. That\u2019ll have an impact, too.<\/p>\n<p>One wonders\u2064 if\u200c Levi\u2019s comments will embolden\u200c other actors and moviemakers to speak out.
