The AG\u2019s \u200boffice is investigating the\u200b Nashville-based center for potential medical billing fraud connected to transgender medical treatments \u200dfor minors.<\/p>\n<p>VUMC chief communications officer John Howser <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tennessee-transgender-vanderbilt-e524f08f8324c46b106cbe3a054724ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Associated Press last week the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services \u200bOffice of Civil \u200cRights \u2064contacted\u2063 the medical center just weeks after two patients sued the hospital system, claiming they were among more than 100 current and \u2063former patients whose records were \u200dturned over\u200c to Tennessee state authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe \u200dhave\u200b no further comment since this is\u200d an ongoing investigation,\u201d Howser said.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti\u2019s office confirmed in June that \u2062it was investigating\u200b the medical center over potential billing fraud. The center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/vanderbilt-pediatric-transgender-clinic-terminates-gender-affirming-care-before-tennessee-law-takes-effect-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently<\/a> ceased providing cross-sex hormones and performing sex-change \u2064surgeries on minors in compliance with a new Tennessee law that took effect earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon \u200dSmith, chief of staff for the state attorney general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/vanderbilt-gives-tennessee-ag-gender-clinic-patient-records-under-investigation-for-billing-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that the investigation \u2064is purely about Vanderbilt\u2019s \u200bbilling practices and not about the patients themselves, saying the AG\u2019s \u2062office was \u201csurprised that VUMC has deliberately chosen to frighten its patients like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Office does not publicize\u2063 fraud investigations to preserve the integrity \u2064of the \u2064investigative process. The Office\u200d maintains patient records\u2064 in the strictest confidence, as required \u200dby law,\u201d Smith added.\u200c \u201cThe investigation is focused solely on VUMC and certain related providers, not patients, as \u2062VUMC is well\u200b aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/14\/us\/tennessee-vanderbilt-university-medical-center-investigation-transgender-reaj\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> CNN that\u200b the medical center \u201creceived valid requests\u201d \u2062from state \u200bauthorities as part \u200cof its investigation, which sought information about transgender care \u2064at VUMC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tennessee Attorney\u200d General has legal authority in\u200b an investigation to require that VUMC provide complete copies of\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vanderbilt-gives-tennessee-ag-gender-clinic-patient-records-under-investigation-for-billing-fraud\/\" title=\"Vanderbilt hands over gender clinic records to TN AG amid billing fraud probe.\">patient medical records<\/a> that are relevant to that investigation, and VUMC\u200c was obligated to do so,\u201d Howser said.\u2062 \u201cVUMC complies with all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-the-government-wont-be-coming-to-your-door-if-youre-not-vaccinated\/\" title=\"No, The Government Won\u2019t Be Coming To Your Door If You\u2019re Not Vaccinated\">health care privacy<\/a> and security requirements established under\u2064 both Federal and \u2063Tennessee \u2062law, including but not limited to HIPAA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The investigation into VUMC\u2063 from\u2064 the Biden administration \u2063comes after a heated legislative \u2064session earlier this year when Tennessee\u200b Republicans moved to prevent sex change procedures and hormones from being \u200bprescribed to minors, \u200blegislation prompted by The Daily Wire\u2019s \u200binvestigation into VUMC\u2019s gender clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Wire host Matt Walsh published a bombshell\u2063 report last \u2062year that prompted Tennessee lawmakers to prohibit doctors from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vanderbilt-pediatric-transgender-clinic-terminates-gender-affirming-care-before-tennessee-law-takes-effect-report\/\" title=\"Vanderbilt Pediatric Transgender Clinic Terminates \u2018Gender-Affirming Care\u2019 Before Tennessee Law Takes Effect: Report\">performing sex-change treatments<\/a> and surgeries on minors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: My team and I\u2062 have been investigating the\u200b transgender clinic at Vanderbilt here in Nashville.
