According \u200dto\u2063 their findings, this type of gas production is associated with childhood lymphoma,\u2063 slightly lower birth\u200b weights, and worsened asthma.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2063 of Pittsburgh School of Public Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Health presented this data at a recent \u200cpublic hearing. However, the researchers \u2062faced criticism from concerned individuals who believed that the investigation may have \u200ddownplayed\u2062 the health risks of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Much of the public health literature\u200c has not necessarily kept up with the effects \u2064of the rapid expansion of unconventional natural gas drilling, especially in southwest Pennsylvania,&#8221; said James Fabisiak of Pittsburgh&#8217;s School of Public Health.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the course of \u200bfour years, Fabisiak and his colleagues conducted three studies on the health effects of \u2064unconventional natural gas development and other environmental\u2063 risk factors. Their\u200c research was supported by a $2.5 million \u2064grant from former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf.<\/p>\n<p>One\u2062 study focused on childhood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, \u2062and bone cancers. The team analyzed nearly 500 childhood cancer cases documented by the Pennsylvania Department\u200c of Health. They discovered a potential \u2062link\u200c between \u200bunconventional \u2064natural gas development and\u200d Ewing&#8217;s\u2063 sarcoma, a \u200crare form of bone cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Another study examined the impact of\u2064 unconventional natural gas \u2062development on asthma, \u2063while \u200ba \u200cthird investigated \u200bbirth outcomes such\u200b as\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-does-this-image-show-an-old-winston-cigarette-ad-targeting-pregnant-women\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: Does This Image Show An Old Winston Cigarette Ad Targeting Pregnant Women?\">low birth weight<\/a> and \u200bprematurity.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2062 is important to note that the investigations excluded Pittsburgh residents, as the researchers believed they were \u200dnot representative of the population in rural southwest Pennsylvania,\u2063 where \u200bunconventional natural gas drilling is more prevalent.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200dresearchers found a strong association between the natural gas production phase and worsened asthma symptoms in individuals living within 10\u200d miles of \u200da natural gas well. However, this link was not observed during fracking, drilling, or well preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Living within a mile \u200bof one or more wells also increased\u2062 the likelihood of developing\u200c lymphoma in \u200dchildren \u200bby five to seven times.<\/p>\n<p>Maternal proximity\u2062 to fracking was found to \u2062have a \u2062small effect on fetal growth, resulting \u200cin babies being 20 \u2064to 40 grams lighter when born\u200c to mothers\u200d within \u200d10 miles of unconventional natural gas\u2063 drilling.<\/p>\n<p>While the studies did not directly investigate the causes of\u2062 these health issues, they did \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-randomly-makes-up-story-about-being-born-in-same-hospital-his-grandfather-died-at-weeks-prior\/\" title=\"Biden Randomly Makes Up Story About Being Born in Same Hospital His Grandfather Died at Weeks Prior\">provide valuable insights<\/a> into\u2063 the potential risks associated with unconventional natural gas development.<\/p>\n<h2>Skepticism and Valid Concerns<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the significant findings, activists and attendees \u2063at\u2063 the public hearing expressed skepticism and raised valid concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Janice Blannock, a resident whose son died of Ewing&#8217;s sarcoma, questioned why the researchers\u2063 did not directly\u200b study levels of radium \u200cand other radioactive waste produced during hydraulic fracturing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Okay, it&#8217;s naturally occurring\u2064 in \u2063the\u200b ground, but when you&#8217;re bringing it to the surface and spreading it all over our communities\u2014and our kids\u2064 are dying from Ewing&#8217;s sarcoma and\u200d brain cancers and \u2063lymphomas and every other [expletive] \u200cthing\u2014why wasn&#8217;t it included in your study?&#8221; she asked.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>James\u200d Fabisiak acknowledged\u200b the validity of her point but explained the challenges \u2062of\u200c conducting a retrospective study on radioactivity exposure. He expressed \u2064willingness to explore measures to address this concern in future research.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ned Ketyer, president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, \u2063emphasized the significance of the findings on\u200b asthma, stating\u200c that asthma is a serious disease that should not be underestimated.<\/p>\n<p>Justin \u2063Nobel, a science reporter, inquired \u200dabout the connection \u2064between\u2064 drinking water and health problems, but the\u2064 researchers did not have sufficient data on past \u2062drinking water \u2062to include it in their studies.<\/p>\n<p>While the research has\u200d shed \u2062light on the potential health risks associated with unconventional natural gas development, further investigation and measures \u200bare\u200d necessary to fully understand and address these concerns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers in southwestern Pennsylvania have found a connection between unconventional natural gas development and childhood lymphoma, lower birth weights, and aggravated asthma during production.
