Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a \u2064prominent advocate for \u200bstudent loan forgiveness on Capitol Hill, has disclosed that she owes the Department of \u2064Education up to $50,000 in student loans, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aoc-owed-up-to-50000-in-student-loans-while-leading-calls-for-debt-cancellation\/\" title=\"AOC had up to K in student loans while advocating for debt cancellation.\">recent financial filings reviewed<\/a> by the \u200bWashington Examiner.<\/p>\n<p>The filing revealed that as of 2022, Ocasio-Cortez owed the department between $15,000 and $50,000 for her student loans. Responding to a Marist \u2062poll that indicated President Joe Biden&#8217;s low approval rating among young adults, \u2062she posted, &#8220;Now \u2064would be a great time \u200dto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chuck-schumer-quietly-shutting-down-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-primary-challenge\/\" title=\"Chuck Schumer Quietly Shutting Down Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Primary Challenge\">cancel student loan debt<\/a>, take significant climate action,\u2064 and pass voting rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s student loan debt\u2064 was already public knowledge, as her 2021 financial\u200d disclosure revealed \u200bher liability of up to $50,000.<\/p>\n<h3>Biden&#8217;s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan<\/h3>\n<p>In August 2022, President Biden unveiled his student\u200d loan forgiveness plan, which aimed to \u2062forgive up to\u200c $20,000 of\u200b student loan debt for borrowers earning under $125,000 \u200cindividually\u2063 or $250,000 for married couples. However, members of Congress, including Ocasio-Cortez,\u200c earn \u2063an annual salary of $174,000. While she\u200c celebrated the plan, she advocated for more forgiveness for\u200b individuals burdened with higher amounts of debt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was YOUR pushing, \u200cYOUR \u200bpressure, YOUR organizing that \u200bgot them to this point,&#8221; Ocasio-Cortez expressed on Instagram. &#8220;I am very grateful for this watershed moment of a first step \u2014 \u200dit \u2062is\u2063 so encouraging, \u2062thrilling, and has\u200c already changed SO \u200dmany\u200d people&#8217;s lives. \u200bBut I am also thinking about how this still leaves a question mark for those \u2064in the highest amounts of debt, who need the most amount of help. So let&#8217;s celebrate and keep going.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Other Members of the &#8220;Squad&#8221; with Student Loan Debt<\/h3>\n<p>Another member of \u2063the &#8220;Squad,&#8221; Rep. Rashida Tlaib \u2063(D-MI), also carries a significant \u2062amount of student loan debt. Tlaib \u2062owes over $100,000 to the Department of Education for her \u2062law degree.
