Version: 4.0.47--><div>\n<h2>Americans Favor Tariffs on\u200c Chinese Goods and Call for Military Preparedness, Survey Shows<\/h2>\n<p>Bipartisan majorities of <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Americans<\/span> favor more <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">tariffs<\/span> on Chinese goods and believe that the\u2064 United States needs to step up preparations for \u200bmilitary threats from the country, according to a new Reuters\/Ipsos survey.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062two<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-approval-close-to-falling-into-the-20s-after-another-brutal-week\/\" title=\"Biden's Approval Close to Falling Into the 20s After Another Brutal Week\">-day poll<\/a>,\u200d which \u200bconcluded\u200b on Tuesday,\u200c revealed deep worries among \u200d <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Americans<\/span> about China&#8217;s global influence at a time when U.S.-China relations have\u200c fallen to their lowest point in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Some 66 percent of respondents said they were \u200dmore likely to \u2062 <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">back<\/span> a candidate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-goes-viral-for-looking-half-asleep-while-mumbling-in-brutal-oval-office-video\/\" title=\"Biden's Sleepy and Mumbling Video in Oval Office Goes Viral\">2024 \u2062presidential election<\/a>\u2063 who &#8220;supports additional <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">tariffs<\/span> on Chinese imports.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another 66 percent\u2063 of respondents\u2014including 58 percent of Democrats and 81 percent \u2063of Republicans\u2014agreed with a statement that the United States &#8220;needs\u2062 to do \u2063more to prepare for military threats from China.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still, just\u2063 38 percent of <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Americans<\/span> supported the \u200cpossible deployment of U.S. troops to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, showing the political constraints facing\u2064 any president seeking \u200bU.S. military involvement in \u2063a conflict\u200b involving China.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pelosi-national-guard-to-stay-at-capitol-as-long-as-they-are-needed\/\" title=\"Pelosi: National Guard to Stay at Capitol \u2018As Long as They Are Needed\u2019\">bipartisan concern<\/a> about China helps explain the increasingly combative stances Republican presidential candidates\u2062 have taken toward the world&#8217;s second-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fed-found-economy-is-recovering-much-faster-than-officials-expected\/\" title=\"Fed Found Economy Is Recovering Much Faster Than Officials Expected\">recent months<\/a>, Republican White House hopefuls have attacked China\u200d daily,\u2062 with\u200c each candidate\u200c trying to show voters that they are\u2063 best positioned to take on America&#8217;s geopolitical foe.<\/p>\n<p>Former president Donald Trump, Florida governor \u200dRon DeSantis, and former UN\u2062 Ambassador Nikki Haley have all\u2063 called for the \u200bUnited States\u200b to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americans-want-tougher-china-policies-poll-shows\/\" title=\"Poll shows Americans desire stronger policies towards China.\">end permanent normal trade relations<\/a> with China, which \u200bwould limit \u2064economic ties between the countries.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has sought to stabilize the intense U.S.-China rivalry through \u2062high-level official\u200b engagement. But \u2062at recent fundraising events the \u2063president has called its\u200d economy a &#8220;ticking \u2062time \u200bbomb&#8221;\u2063 and referred to \u2064its \u2062leader\u2062 Xi Jinping\u200d a dictator.<\/p>\n<h3>Defending Taiwan?<\/h3>\n<p>The online Reuters\/Ipsos poll was conducted nationwide, \u200dcollecting \u2063responses from \u200d1,005 adults, including 443 \u2063Democrats and 346 Republicans. It had a credibility interval, a measure of precision,\u2064 of about 4 percentage points in either direction.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-five percent of <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Americans<\/span> had a negative\u2064 view toward China, while 84%\u200b saw Xi at\u200d least \u200dslightly unfavorably. \u200cSome 65 percent\u2062 felt China&#8217;s government was trying to influence the U.S. election.<\/p>\n<p>While half of respondents \u200dsupported aiding Taiwan with military \u200dequipment to deter a\u200d possible Chinese attack, 42 \u200cpercent opposed \u200cdeploying U.S. troops\u2063 in Taiwan&#8217;s \u2063defense, and 20% said they didn&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan, \u200cthe democratically\u200b governed\u2063 island claimed by China as its territory, is the main \u200cflashpoint in U.S. \u200bties with China&#8217;s Communist government.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Central \u2064Intelligence Agency director William Burns \u200chas said that \u2063Xi had ordered \u2063his military to be \u200dready to conduct an invasion of Taiwan by 2027,\u2064 though that\u200b does not necessarily mean he will go ahead with it.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has never renounced the use of force to\u200c bring Taiwan\u200b under its rule.<\/p>\n<p>Biden said in 2022 that \u200bU.S forces would defend Taiwan in the\u200b event of a\u2063 Chinese invasion, appearing to go beyond the long-standing U.S. approach of &#8220;strategic \u200cambiguity&#8221; &#8211; not making clear \u200cwhether \u2063it would \u2064respond militarily to such an attack.<\/p>\n<p>But his administration\u200c has routinely said there has been no change to\u200b U.S.\u200d policy toward Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>(Reporting by Michael\u200d Martina, Jason Lange and Gram \u200cSlattery; Editing by Don\u200d Durfee &#038; Shri Navaratnam)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Published under:<\/strong> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/tag\/china\/\" title=\"View all posts in China\">China<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent Reuters\/Ipsos survey found that bipartisan majorities of Americans support increased tariffs on Chinese goods and believe the US should enhance military readiness against potential threats from China.
