And it turns out,\u2063 Milei \u2014 also known as <em>el Peluca<\/em> (\u201cThe\u200c Wig\u201d) because he sports the hairstyle of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/my-favorite-presidential-candidate-is-running-in-argentina\/\" title=\"I love an Argentine Presidential candidate!\">man spinning\u2063 jazz-flute fusion records<\/a>\u200b in his velvet-draped bachelor pad circa 1972 \u2014 is far more\u200d interesting than headlines would\u200c have us believe.<\/p>\n<p>An economist and rhetorical pugilist, Milei\u2019s philosophical outlook could more precisely be described\u2064 as \u200c\u201cdoctrinaire ultraliberal,\u201d (the good kind) as <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/international\/2023-03-30\/javier-milei-the-unclassifiable-argentine-politician.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">someone<\/a> recently put it. That is news\u2063 because it is an exceptionally rare outlook.<\/p>\n<p>Milei threatens to\u200d upend the political order in a country in\u200d the middle of another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ca-governor-breaks-his-own-covid-rules-to-eat-fancy-french-food\/\" title=\"Ca. Governor Breaks His Own COVID Rules To Eat Fancy French Food\">economic meltdown<\/a>. Once-low poverty rates have\u200b exploded \u2014 some estimates put it \u200dat \u200d43 percent \u2014 \u2063while the currency continues to lose its value. Milei, a longtime television personality, has made \u200dthe\u200b case that \u200dArgentines are \u201chostages\u201d \u2062to generationally destructive economic policy (interest rates\u2064 were hiked to 118 \u2063percent\u200d this \u2064week.) He argues that politicians\u200c \u2014 or, as he calls them, \u201crats\u201d of the \u201cparasitic caste\u201d \u2014 have destroyed one of the richest \u2063countries in the world \u200b\u201cwith nefarious ideas to line their pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of those ideas, Milei\u200b argues, can \u200cbe found\u200b in Keynesian economics, which lays at the heart of most of Western \u200dsociety\u2019s ills. The candidate promises to shut down the \u200bcentral\u2063 bank,\u200d dollarize the economy, deregulate \u200cmarkets, open up trade, cut\u2063 taxes, and pare\u200b the regulatory regime. Not incidentally, his English Mastiffs are named after Milton Friedman, Murray Rothbard, and Robert Lucas. (Question: \u201cIs economics \u2063an exact science?\u201d Answer: \u201cNo, because if it were, socialism would\u2064 work.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Milei was recently\u200c asked \u200cif happiness was \u2064more important than liberty. \u200b\u201cThey go hand in hand. You cannot be\u200b happy without being free,\u201d \u2064he responded. We should be skeptical that\u2019s the case for everyone. But Milei\u2019s placing of personal liberty as the prerequisite for not only a prosperous society but a virtuous one is\u2064 welcome in\u200d a world where politicians increasingly look to bureaucracies, the welfare state, and \u201cindustrial policy\u201d\u200d to save \u2063us.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, big-government conservatives like to complain \u200bthat \u201clibertarians\u201d like Milei \u2064aren\u2019t equipped, or are unwilling, to take \u200bon social issues. Yet the candidate\u2062 not only does so, he frames \u200dhis defense as both a moral and liberal imperative. \u201cI am openly against\u2063 abortion,\u201d Milei\u200b says, \u201cas a liberal I believe \u2064in unrestricted respect for others, you can choose over your body but not over the body of the other.\u201d When asked\u200d why he \u200dwants to shut down government \u201csex education\u201d programs, Milei referred to them as \u201ca mechanism\u201d of propaganda that destroys the\u2062 family and \u201ccomes down from the State with the intention\u2063 of promoting everything that has the line of the left and gender ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While \u200bMilei has \u2063a Trumpian \u2063disdain for \u201celites\u201d and engenders loyalty from his fans, the \u200cArgentine does not share the former president\u2019s adoration for state power\u200c and believes (rightly) that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/neil-patel-the-left-is-about-to-pay-for-their-energy-insanity\/\" title=\"Neil Patel: The Left Is About to Pay for Their Energy Insanity\">free markets offer<\/a> a massive\u2064 positive\u2063 upside for the \u200bworking \u2062and middle class.<\/p>\n<p>Milei has promised to raffle\u200c off his\u200c presidential paycheck, and 2.4\u200b million Argentines\u200d have already registered to win \u2064$3,200 every month. \u201cTo me, that is dirty money,\u201d he explained. \u201cFrom my philosophical point of view, the state is a criminal organization that is funded \u2064through taxes taken from people\u2064 by force. \u200bWe \u200bare giving back\u2063 the money\u200c that the political caste has stolen.\u201d And along with rejecting climate alarmism as a destructive attack on modernity, he proposes an armed citizenry and calls for \u2062Argentina\u2064 to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem (both the United \u2064States and Israel, he says, \u200care his \u201cnatural allies.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Into my veins, as the kids say.<\/p>\n<p>And what might seem surprising, is that Milei\u2019s popularity is driven\u2063 by younger voters. It is, of course, likely\u200b that part of that support is a protest vote \u200cagainst the \u2064failures\u200c of the Argentinian establishment rather than any ideological\u2062 statement. Most ordinary people \u200daren\u2019t \u201cdoctrinaire\u201d about anything. Still, it shows that individual liberty \u2014 mocked as antiquated and\u200c puerile rhetoric by both right and left\u200b these days \u2014 can still have some currency.<\/p>\n<p>All this radical liberalism talk has prompted President Alberto Fernandez to warn that Milei is \u201ca threat to democracy\u201d and invoke \u200cAdolf Hitler and totalitarianism, as \u2063one always \u2064does.
