Pvt. King had been &#8220;kept under control&#8221; by North Korean soldiers after\u200c deliberately intruding into their territory. According to KCNA, Pvt. King confessed \u200dthat he crossed into North Korea due to his disillusionment with the unequal American society and the inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination \u2063within the U.S. Army.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea, \u200bofficially known as the Democratic People&#8217;s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is \u2062currently conducting an investigation into the case. This is the first public comment from North Korea regarding the American soldier&#8217;s status, as the United States had received no response to their repeated requests for \u2064updates.<\/p>\n<p>Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, confirmed on Aug. 1 that\u200c North Korea had acknowledged the United Nations Command&#8217;s inquiry but provided no further information. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin \u200cpreviously stated that Pvt. King had &#8220;willfully and \u2064without authorization&#8221; crossed the military demarcation line separating the two Koreas.<\/p>\n<h2>Soldier&#8217;s Family Appeals to\u200c North Korea<\/h2>\n<p>The soldier&#8217;s mother, Claudine Gates, is making\u200b a heartfelt appeal \u2063to North Korea to treat her son &#8220;humanely.&#8221; She anxiously \u200bawaits a\u200c phone call from\u2064 Pvt. King, as she hopes for his safe return. The family\u200d spokesman, Jonathan Franks, expressed their gratitude for the Defense Department&#8217;s focus \u200don bringing Travis home.<\/p>\n<p>Soo Kim, an \u2064expert with Virginia-based consultancy\u2062 LMI and a former CIA analyst, believes that North Korea&#8217;s public\u2064 comments\u200b could be part\u2062 of their propaganda. She suggests that the detained American citizen\u2064 will have no influence over how North Korea shapes its narrative. Kim speculates that North Korea may attempt to\u200d use Pvt. King&#8217;s life \u2062as a bargaining chip for financial concessions from the\u200d U.S., making negotiations challenging and terms dictated by Pyongyang.<\/p>\n<p>While \u2062thousands of North Koreans have fled to South Korea to escape political \u200coppression and economic difficulties, \u200dcases of Americans or\u2062 South Koreans defecting to North Korea are rare.
