Ron DeSantis \u200bis running a distant second but still far ahead\u200c of Mr. Pence. And to many Republican voters, Mr. Pence is seen as \u2064either disloyal to \u200bhis commander-in-chief or tainted \u200dby his association with one of the\u2063 most \u200dcontroversial\u200b presidents in recent history.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the seemingly \u200bimpossible challenge, some observers say Mr. Pence could chart a \u200cpath to the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPence does have a\u200d viable candidacy,\u201d\u2064 Mark Kaley, a\u2064 public relations \u200cstrategist who worked as a field organizer in the 2020 presidential election \u200bcycle, told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHow does Pence get there? He needs to perform well at the debates and in \u200dthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rnc-chair-issues-warning-to-trump-weeks-before-first-gop-debate\/\" title=\"RNC Chair warns Trump ahead of first GOP debate.\">early \u2063primary states<\/a> to prove\u2062 he \u200cis a contender,\u201d Mr. Kaley said.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond\u2063 that, according to Mr. Kaley, \u201cfor Pence or any other candidate &#8230; the stars need \u200calignment \u200cto secure\u2063 the nomination. But crazier things have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Based on his early campaign\u200c events, \u2064speeches, and policy statements, it appears Mr. Pence is banking on the alignment of three stars to create a winning\u2063 platform: President Trump\u2019s\u2064 record, a \u200crevival\u200b of traditional conservatism, and a hunger in \u2063the electorate for a return to civility \u200din political discourse.<\/p>\n<p>Along the\u2062 way, Mr. Pence will have to\u200c answer the question raised by many voters concerning \u200bhis loyalty to the president and the party on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/p>\n<h2>The Trump-Pence Record<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Pence draws on his role in the Trump administration to position himself as an \u200cexperienced statesman who is ready to lead. In his speeches \u200band writing, Mr. Pence portrays\u2062 his vice presidential role as that of\u200d a trusted\u200c adviser to the president, often dispatched as\u200d a surrogate for dealing with international matters.<\/p>\n<p>And the \u200bformer vice president is\u200d not shy about \u200bclaiming \u2064partial credit for President Trump\u2019s\u2063 accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am \u200cincredibly proud\u2064 of the record\u200b of the Trump-Pence \u200badministration,\u201d Mr. Pence told a Republican \u200bgroup in Davenport, \u2062Iowa, \u2063on Aug. 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn four short years,\u200d we rebuilt \u2063our military, revived\u2063 our economy, we secured \u200dour border, we\u2063 appointed conservatives to our \u200bcourts at every level, including three new conservatives that were part\u200d of the majority that sent\u00a0Roe vs. Wade to the ash heap of history and gave America \u200ba new beginning for\u2063 the right \u200cto life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier that \u2064day,\u200b Mr.\u2063 Pence told \u2063a group of veterans that he\u2064 negotiated President Trump\u2019s Remain in Mexico \u2062policy,\u2063 a key part of the administration\u2019s approach to immigration, on\u2064 behalf of the \u2062president. Mr.\u200c Pence has also spoken of confronting Russian President Vladimir\u200b Putin over alleged Russian interference in the\u200c 2016\u2062 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>In his memoir, &#8220;So Help Me God,&#8221; Mr. Pence describes \u2063a close\u2062 working\u200b relationship with President Trump that included daily \u200cconversations. He was a confidant and \u2063adviser to the\u200b president, occasionally disagreeing with him though always in private, according \u2063to Mr. Pence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ll always believe that we charted a course for restoring American \u200bsecurity and \u200bprosperity,\u201d \u200bMr. Pence told\u200b Iowa Gov. Kim\u2064 Reynolds\u2062 during an \u200cinterview at the \u2064Iowa \u200cState Fair\u2063 on Aug. 11.<\/p>\n<p>By\u2063 running on the Trump record, Mr. Pence aims to show himself as the most experienced leader in the\u2063 field other than President Trump himself, and perhaps the only true statesman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m running\u200d because\u2064 I think this is no time for on-the-job training. The challenges America\u2064 is facing\u2064 around the world are\u2062 profound,\u201d Mr. Pence told Ms. Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we need leadership that can appeal to the better angels of our nature, leadership \u200bthat can\u00a0at\u00a0least have the possibility of bringing American people together,\u201d Mr. Pence told Ms. Reynolds.<\/p>\n<h2>Classic Conservative<\/h2>\n<p>While Mr. Pence can point to his record as a governor and vice president,\u2063 he\u2019s not the only experienced \u200bexecutive in the race.<\/p>\n<p>Gov.\u2062 Ron DeSantis is running largely on his record in\u200c Florida. Candidates Nikki Haley and Asa Hutchinson are both former governors, of South Carolina and Arkansas respectively, \u2063and both have served \u200bin executive roles in prior presidential administrations.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Pence wants to make\u2063 America strong again. His strategy for \u2064doing so is to bulk up the\u200b military, downsize \u2062the\u2064 federal government, and unleash\u2063 American \u2063energy production.<\/p>\n<p>If that sounds like classic Reaganism of the 1980s, it is.<\/p>\n<p>The former vice president refers to President Reagan often as his political hero \u2063and frequently borrows the statement made often by President Reagan, \u201cPeace comes through strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If elected, Mr. Pence intends to transport the country\u200b back to a future defined by \u2064true\u200c conservatism, which he believes is seeping out of the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we must \u2062give the\u2063 American people new Republican leadership, leadership with a proven commitment to the conservative agenda,\u201d \u200cMr. Pence told some 1,200 Republican donors at a state \u2064fundraising\u200c dinner in Des Moines, Iowa, on July\u2064 28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look \u200bforward to \u2064being on\u2064 that debate stage \u200bso I can talk about the vision that I\u2062 have for\u200d the Republican party going forward,\u201d Mr. Pence told reporters on Aug. 2, speaking of \u2063the \u200bupcoming \u2062GOP debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think\u2063 I&#8217;ll not only be the most experienced\u200c conservative on that \u200dstage, the most qualified\u2063 candidate to \u200cbe the next president of the United States. \u200cBut\u2064 I also believe I&#8217;ll be \u200bable to draw a contrast \u2063between\u200b my former running mate and others on the\u200c stage, \u2062who increasingly are walking\u2062 away \u2063from that \u2064time-honored conservative agenda that has built\u200b the Republican Party \u2062over the last 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here Mr. Pence plays\u200b to his view of American strength, which he equates with \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-lack-of-any-strategy-for-ukraine-shows-hes-got-none-for-u-s-national-security-either%ef%bf%bc\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Lack Of Any Strategy For Ukraine Shows He\u2019s Got None For U.S. National Security Either\ufffc\">global military dominance<\/a>. That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/analysis-how-the-pence-campaign-aims-to-win-nomination-remake-party\/\" title=\"Pence Campaign's Strategy: Secure Nomination, Revamp Party\">includes significantly increasing military spending<\/a> to a minimum of 3.5 percent of \u2062the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/its-official-trump-crushes-record-for-largest-gdp-increase-in-us-history-3rd-quarter-gdp-up-33-1\/\" title=\"IT'S OFFICIAL: Trump Crushes Record for Largest GDP Increase in US History -- 3rd Quarter GDP Up 33.1%\">gross domestic product<\/a> (GDP).\u200c During the\u2064 Reagan years, U.S. military spending averaged above 6 percent of GDP but has fallen to about\u200c 3 percent. The percentage is expected to decrease further, reaching about 2.8 percent by 2033, according to the Congressional \u2063Budget Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe \u2062need to hew to our roots,\u201d Mr. Pence said on\u2063 Aug. 10.\u200d \u201cWe need to stand\u200c firm in the belief that America is the leader of the free world, the \u200carsenal of\u200b democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Regulatory Reform<\/h2>\n<p>Federal deregulation is another tenet \u200cof Reagan\u2063 conservatism.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that President Trump promised to\u200c remove \u2063two federal \u2063regulations for each new one implemented, Mr. Pence\u200c has said he would eliminate three for one. He has also \u2064said he would eliminate the Environmental \u2063Protection \u2062Agency and the \u2062Department of Education, install new leadership in the Department of Justice, \u200dand\u2063 revoke billions in funding\u200b for the hiring of additional IRS\u200b agents over the \u200cnext\u200d decade.<\/p>\n<p>Reducing the size and scope \u2062of the federal government is\u2062 a\u2064 standard Republican\u200c talking point. For Mr. Pence, however, that goes beyond eliminating burdensome bureaucracy.\u2062 He sees it as\u2064 an effort to return the federal government to its\u200c proper constitutional role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to revive federalism in America, because America&#8217;s \u200cgovernors, Republican governors, are proving \u2064every day that you can \u2063deliver prosperity and security and opportunity\u200b for your people,\u201d Mr. Pence said in \u200bthe interview with Ms. Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to have a \u2062season \u200bwhere we&#8217;re returning to the \u2064states\u200d and to the American people what our founders intended under the 10th Amendment to the Constitution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The \u206210th Amendment states \u200bthat \u201cthe powers\u200d not \u200ddelegated\u200d to the United States by \u2062the Constitution, nor prohibited\u200b by it to the\u2063 States, are reserved to the \u200cStates respectively, or to the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u2062 Pence is a fiscal conservative who advocates for reductions in both taxes and spending, including an overhaul of Medicare and Social Security.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Pence\u2019s\u200c social \u200bconservatism is \u2063well \u200bknown. He describes himself as unapologetically \u2064pro-life and advocates a \u2064national \u2064ban on abortion \u200dat 15 weeks as a minimum standard.<\/p>\n<p>The federalist strategy may work\u2064 better for\u2063 the primaries than\u200b for the general election, if Mr. Pence \u2063were to get that far, \u2062according to one analyst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis main base remains those\u2063 that are \u200bconservatives with a strong view on keeping the\u200d GOP tilted towards\u200c the recent Supreme Court decisions, those seeking to\u200c enshrine conservatism not merely in terms\u200b of an \u200belection strategy but in\u200d long-term constitutional \u2064rulings,\u201d Alp\u2062 Sevimlisoy, \u200bMillennium Leadership Fellow at the Atlantic Council, told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>To win in 2024, \u200bhowever, Mr.\u2062 Pence would have to broaden \u2063his \u200ccoalition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Vice President Mike Pence faces a daunting challenge.
