Trump&#8217;s\u200d competitors for \u2064the 2024 Republican presidential nomination have reacted to the indictment handed up by a grand jury in \u200dFulton County, Georgia, on the evening of Aug. 14. So \u2064far, the\u2064 response has\u2062 been relatively muted.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">President Trump and 18 others\u2014including his\u2064 former White House \u200cChief of Staff \u2064Mark\u2063 Meadows, his former attorney \u2064Rudy Giuliani, and attorneys John Eastman and Sidney Powell\u2014were\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/georgia-grand-jury-returns-indictment-in-trump-2020-case-5455188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged<\/a> under \u2062the Racketeer\u2062 Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Chris Christie said he thinks the\u2062 Georgia indictment of\u200b President Trump was &#8220;unnecessary&#8221; in light of the\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trumps-2024-rivals-not-of-one-mind-on-georgia-indictment\/\" title=\"Different opinions on Georgia indictment among Trump's 2024 rivals.\">ongoing federal election interference case<\/a> \u2062from \u200dspecial counsel Jack Smith.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He argued that\u200b the former\u200d chief executive&#8217;s actions shaded into the &#8220;problematic&#8221; with his efforts to \u2062seat an alternate slate of \u200belectors from Georgia, &#8220;and the pressure that \u2063was being put on folks&#8221;\u200b following three \u2063recounts of the 2020 presidential vote in the state.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mr. Christie said there was &#8220;nothing&#8221; to President Trump&#8217;s \u200dclaim that Fulton County\u2064 District Attorney Fani Willis&#8217;s indictment was timed to coincide with his presidential \u2062campaign.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;If, in \u2062fact, the charges had happened three years ago, he would have said there was no \u2062investigation [and it was] a rush to judgment,&#8221; Mr. Christie said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He\u200d also dismissed a comparison from\u200b Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz, who likened President Trump&#8217;s 2020 strategy to that of Al Gore when Mr. Gore challenged the \u20622000 election results in Florida.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;When Al Gore lost his legal challenges, he conceded \u200dthe election,&#8221; Mr. \u200cChristie said. &#8220;Donald Trump has been much different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s take it aside for a second from the criminal. We can&#8217;t normalize this conduct. \u200bI mean, \u2062this has never happened before in this country, ever, \u2064where you \u200dhad a candidate for president of the \u200dUnited\u2063 States conduct himself in this\u200b way, to disrespect the election process in this\u200c way, to refuse to accept the verdict of the voters,&#8221; Mr. Christie continued.<\/p>\n<h2>Ramaswamy and Laffey Voice Concerns<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some of President Trump&#8217;s 2024\u200c competitors voiced greater\u200d sympathy for the last Republican president.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Earlier\u2062 in the\u200c day on Aug. 14, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy responded to \u2063the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/georgia-posts-then-removes-racketeering-other-charges-against-trump-5464291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/georgia-posts-then-removes-racketeering-other-charges-against-trump\/\" title=\"Georgia initially filed racketeering and other charges against Trump, but later retracted them.\">apparently premature release<\/a><\/a> of criminal charges against President Trump prior to the grand jury&#8217;s vote, as first reported by Reuters.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Epoch Times has \u2062not \u200bindependently verified Reuters&#8217;\u2062 reporting on the history of that document. The news agency claims the document first appeared on Fulton County&#8217;s website before vanishing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It\u2019s downright pathetic that Fulton County publicly \u2062posted \u2062the indictment on its \u200dwebsite even \u2062before the \u2063grand jury had finished convening,&#8221;\u200c Mr. Ramaswamy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VivekGRamaswamy\/status\/1691149756272095248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Since\u200b the four prosecutions against Trump are\u2064 using novel &#038; \u200buntested legal theories, it\u2019s fair game for him to do the same in defense: \u2062immediately file a motion to dismiss\u2064 for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-indicted-ramaswamy-strikes-first-among-gop-primary-foes-in-responding-to-georgia-case\/\" title=\"Ramaswamy leads GOP primary rivals in addressing Georgia case after Trump's indictment.\">constitutional due process violation<\/a> for publicly issuing an indictment\u200d before the grand jury had actually signed one,&#8221; he \u200csaid.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;As \u2064someone\u200d who\u2019s running \u200dfor President against Trump, I\u2019d volunteer to write the amicus brief to the court myself: prosecutors should not be deciding U.S. presidential elections, and if they\u2019re so overzealous that they\u2062 commit constitutional\u200d violations, then the cases should be thrown\u2063 out &#038; they should be \u200cheld accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A spokesperson for Mr. \u200cRamaswamy told The Epoch Times on\u200c Aug. 15 that he has nothing to say beyond that statement now that the formal indictment has been released.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;His thoughts are consistent with that \u200b [earlier statement],&#8221;\u200c Ramaswamy Senior Adviser Tricia McLaughlin said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/buckingham-palace-responds-following-prince-harry-meghan-markle-interview-with-oprah\/\" title=\"Buckingham Palace Responds Following Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Interview With Oprah\">statement released late<\/a> on the evening of Aug. 14, \u200cSteve Laffey, \u2064a presidential hopeful who once served as\u200c mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island, said the\u2064 events come as &#8220;another disturbing \u2062chapter in \u2064our nation\u2019s history book.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He\u2063 said the former president is\u2063 &#8220;facing charges usually reserved for mob bosses \u200cand drug \u2062cartels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Presidential candidates should not face racketeering and \u2062conspiracy charges. A\u200b RICO charge \u2062must be met with the utmost\u2064 seriousness,&#8221;\u2062 Mr. Laffey continued, adding, &#8220;When will the rest of the Republican Party come to their senses?&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Hutchinson and Hurd Critical \u200bof Former President<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a statement released late on Aug. 14, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he had not yet \u2063&#8221;review[ed] the \u2062details of the indictment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Still, he condemned the\u2064 former president \u2063in no uncertain terms.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Over a year ago, I said that Donald Trump&#8217;s actions disqualified him from ever serving as President again.
