However, this deal, criticized by Republicans as a favorable arrangement due to\u2063 Biden&#8217;s connection to the president, faced objections \u2063from U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Noreika expressed concerns about\u200b the structure of the plan, her role in it, and the way it linked\u2062 tax crimes to resolving\u200d felony gun charges. She found the diversion agreement to\u200d be too broad in scope and raised\u200b questions about its atypical nature. During the hearing, it was\u200d revealed that the deal would grant extensive immunity to the president&#8217;s son.<\/p>\n<p>One of the objectionable aspects of the\u200d deal was its broad inclusion of\u2063 an\u200d agreement not to prosecute Hunter\u2062 Biden for crimes in unrelated cases. \u2064This raised eyebrows, with the judge questioning \u2062prosecutors about\u2062 the unprecedented nature of such an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>As a result \u2063of Judge Noreika&#8217;s \u200cobjections, the plea deal\u200c fell apart, leading \u2064Hunter Biden to plead not\u200d guilty.\u200d Despite attempts to negotiate an\u2064 updated agreement, prosecutors believe that the case will \u200cnow \u200dproceed to trial.<\/p>\n<h2>Appointment of a \u200dSpecial Counsel<\/h2>\n<p>Attorney General Merrick Garland \u2064later\u2063 announced that \u200cDavid Weiss had been appointed as a special \u2064counsel \u2062in the case. Weiss \u200bhad been leading the Department \u2063of Justice \u200d(DOJ) \u200cinvestigation into\u200c Hunter Biden since February 2021, which ultimately resulted in the\u200d filing \u2062of tax \u2063and gun charges.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Garland assured Congress that there would be no political interference \u2064in the probe and that Weiss was overseeing the investigation.
