The former president and his \u200bfellow \u2064defendants have until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-08-15\/trump-co-defendants-have-until-aug-25-to-surrender-in-georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aug. 25<\/a> to surrender.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the first Republican presidential\u200d debate looms on Aug. 23. Fox \u200cNews will broadcast the debate in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unlikely Trump will participate. He has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/problem-trump-will-not-qualify-gop-debates-sticks-convictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he won\u2019t \u2064sign a required pledge<\/a> \u2064to support whoever wins the GOP primary race, and he has little incentive to show up, given his big lead in the polls.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday on \u201cCBS Mornings,\u201d CBS \u200cNews \u200bsenior White House and political correspondent Ed O\u2019Keefe noted an opportunity for\u200c Trump. The former president, O\u2019Keefe suggested, could steal attention from his competitors by surrendering on Aug. 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would you rather be that day,\u2063 in Milwaukee with everybody else\u2063 or in that Atlanta courtroom? He knows\u2062 that this has completely sucked oxygen \u200daway from everybody \u2062else\u200b running,\u201d O\u2019Keefe said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-arraignment-georgia-cameras-are-allowed-rico-charges-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS\u2064 News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Trump&#8217;s Strategic Move<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cSo now he can potentially use this to his \u200dadvantage \u2062even\u2062 more,\u201d O\u2019Keefe added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">There will be cameras\u2062 in the courtroom in Georgia, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edokeefe?\">@edokeefe<\/a>, marking a significant difference from\u200b the previous arraignments \u2063of former Pres. Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat has a huge effect on\u200b the public perception of all \u2064of \u200bthis,\u201d says O\u2019Keefe. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jYYgEuy23W\">https:\/\/t.co\/jYYgEuy23W<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zaEE0NVKm6\">pic.twitter.com\/zaEE0NVKm6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS \u200dMornings\u2064 (@CBSMornings) \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSMornings\/status\/1691441546426494976?\">August 15,\u200d 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The theory has merit,\u2064 though not for the reason he implied.<\/p>\n<p>If Trump chooses to surrender himself in Georgia on the day of the debate, he will do so not\u2064 to distract attention from other Republican presidential candidates.\u200b After all, the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2024\/president\/us\/2024_republican_presidential_nomination-7548.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RealClearPolitics<\/a> average\u2062 of polls shows the former president with a nearly 40-point\u2063 lead over his closest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/vivek-ramaswamy-goes-bat-trump-gives-defense-strategy-georgia-courts-latest-move\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Trump has one good reason and one transcendent reason for surrendering \u2064himself on Aug. 23.<\/p>\n<p>First, he has no\u2062 cause to feel anything but contempt for executives at\u2062 Fox News. If he can \u2063damage that moribund network by drawing viewers away from the Republican debate, he will.<\/p>\n<p>Second \u2014\u200b and far more important \u2014 he should appear in Georgia on Aug.\u200b 23 for posterity\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u200b descendants, untainted by current passions, \u2062will marvel at the \u200djuxtaposition.\u200c One\u2063 event, \u200dby\u200d its very name, exists to promote political debate. The other \u2064seeks \u2062to silence\u200b it.<\/p>\n<p>Posterity \u2062should know that a criminal cartel indicted a former president for saying things \u2062with which cartel members \u200ddisagreed. \u2062Future Americans might not read the indictment \u2014 who among\u2064 us \u200beven now\u2064 can bring themselves to read these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/georgia-indictment-says-trump-telling-people-watch-tv-proof-racketeering-activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">farcical<\/a> documents in their entirety? \u2014 but they should see the contrast on Aug. 23.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, we do not think enough about history. This statement, of course, has \u200bbroader applications, but I mean it specifically \u200dwith respect to this case.<\/p>\n<p>No matter \u200cthe day Trump chooses to surrender himself, it\u2063 will mark his fourth arraignment since March 30.<\/p>\n<p>Surely no one can treat any of this as normal.<\/p>\n<p>But they do. The presidential \u200cdebates continue as scheduled. O\u2019Keefe offers his analysis on how a former president\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-hit-fourth-indictment-remember-really-said-famous-georgia-phone-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth indictment<\/a> might\u200b affect a primary.
