Michael Flynn, Per Report\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to conspiring to violate U.S. sanctions\u200b on a wealthy Russian oligarch. McGonigal, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/30-ex-fbi-agents-show-support-for-whistleblower\/\" title=\"30 Ex-FBI Agents Show Support for Whistleblower\">retired special agent<\/a> who led\u2063 the New York\u200b FBI \u200dCounterintelligence Division, entered \u200chis guilty plea in New York on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>During his court appearance, McGonigal expressed deep remorse for his actions and took \u200bfull responsibility for his decisions. He emphasized that his intentions were never to harm\u2064 the United States, the FBI, or his loved\u200d ones.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAfter \u2062his\u200c tenure as a high-level FBI official who supervised and participated in investigations\u2063 of Russian oligarchs, Charles McGonigal has now admitted that he agreed to evade U.S.\u2064 sanctions by providing services\u2063 to one of those\u2063 oligarchs, Oleg\u200d Deripaska,\u201d said \u200bU.S. Attorney Damian\u200c Williams. \u201cThis Office will continue to hold to account those who \u2062violate U.S. sanctions for their own financial benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u200bcharge against McGonigal stems from his \u200dagreement in 2021 to\u2063 provide services to Oleg Deripaska, a sanctioned Russian\u200c oligarch \u200dwhom he had \u200bpreviously investigated. In exchange for secret payments, McGonigal\u2063 conducted research on a rival Russian oligarch.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, \u2064the Treasury Department imposed sanctions\u200c on Deripaska and several\u2063 associated companies as a response to Russia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-fbi-official-pleads-guilty-in-russian-oligarch-sanctions-case\/\" title=\"Ex-FBI Official Admits Guilt in Russian Oligarch Sanctions Case\">malign activities worldwide<\/a>. Last year, the Department of Justice unsealed an indictment charging Deripaska and others with violating U.S. sanctions in relation to Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>McGonigal was arrested in January at John F. \u2063Kennedy International Airport in New York upon his return \u2064from a trip \u200cabroad. He initially pleaded not \u2062guilty \u2064but\u200c has now pleaded guilty \u2062to \u200dthe charges.
