This condition can lead to \u2064dangerous lung damage, infections, and even death, according to Dr. Ion Hobai, an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This is such \u2064a serious potential complication\u200b that \u2064everybody who takes this drug should know \u2063about \u200cit,&#8221; said Dr. Hobai.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr.\u200b Hobai\u2062 recommends that individuals taking these drugs inform their doctors \u200dbefore undergoing \u200dsedation and discuss the associated risks.\u2064 &#8220;If you&#8217;re taking\u2062 this drug and you need an operation, you will \u2062need to\u2063 take extra\u200b precautions,&#8221; he emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>While it \u2064is \u2064unclear how many patients taking these anti-obesity \u200cdrugs may be affected by \u200bthis issue, the consequences are \u200dso severe that Dr. Hobai and \u2064a group of colleagues \u2062have called for the \u2063drug to be discontinued for an even longer period\u2014approximately three weeks before sedation.<\/p>\n<p>This timeframe accounts\u200d for\u200c the duration that semaglutide, the \u2064active \u200cingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, remains in the body. \u2063Dr. \u200bPhilip Jones, a Mayo Clinic \u200canesthesiologist and \u200bdeputy\u200b editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of\u200c Anesthesia, explains, &#8220;When 90 percent \u200dof \u200dit is gone,\u2064 which\u200b is after three \u200dweeks, \u2062hopefully \u2063everything should \u2063go back to normal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, the American \u2063Society\u200b of Anesthesiologists (ASA) advised individuals who take\u2064 GLP-1 agonists like Wegovy or Ozempic daily to\u2064 discontinue the drugs on the day of \u200dtheir \u2062surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ronald L. Harter, the incoming president of\u200c the ASA, expressed concern \u2064over\u200c reports of patients\u200c who \u2064vomited despite fasting\u2063 before or\u2063 after anesthesia.
