(Cara Ding\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a frontline\u200d face for various town services, \u2063residents ask Ms. Ingrassia all\u2062 kinds of questions, many falling outside\u200c her job descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how\u2062 many times we\u2062 Google and find answers for them,\u201d said Ms. Ingrassia, who has a team of two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/border-hearing-in-texas-with-gop-house-reps\/\" title=\"Border hearing in Texas with GOP House reps\">full-time deputies<\/a> and one part-time \u2063worker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, we all are compensated, but there are a lot of \u2064things that we do here not because somebody\u2062 says \u200bthat \u200dis part of\u2064 your job but because we want to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She became a\u200d marriage officiant a\u200b few years ago and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wallkill-town-clerk-louisa-ingrassia-runs-for-reelection\/\" title=\"Louisa Ingrassia, Wallkill Town Clerk, seeks reelection.\">enjoyed performing marriage ceremonies free<\/a> of charge for Wallkill residents.<\/p>\n<h2>Town Clerk Responsibilities<\/h2>\n<p>As a town \u2064clerk, Ms. Ingrassia&#8217;s major responsibility is filing vital records with county and state agencies, a workload that has\u200b grown exponentially \u2062since the opening of Orange Regional Medical Center\u2014\u2064 now known \u200cas Garnet \u2063Health\u2014in\u2062 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Last year,\u200c her \u200doffice processed about 2,000\u2062 birth certificates and 1,000 death certificates, Ms. Ingrassia said, adding that a new hire is sorely needed to catch \u200cup with the\u2062 mounting workload.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Certificates of\u2063 recognition at the office of\u200c Wallkill Town Clerk Louisa Ingrassia in\u200c Middletown, N.Y., on Aug. \u200c9, 2023. (Cara Ding\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another responsibility of hers \u2063is the recordkeeping of town government documents, such as town board and planning board agendas, minutes, \u2062and resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>To this date, she sits in weekly town work sessions with a\u2064 pad and pen\u200c and \u200bjots down key points as discussions \u2062unfold, though occasionally, she brings a recorder.<\/p>\n<p>She \u2064said the town was looking at purchasing software to help with meeting minutes as well \u200das creating an online public \u200cportal for accessing town documents.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 latter will greatly reduce\u200b the Freedom of Information Law inquiries processed by her office, which has received nearly 600 such requests so far this year, \u2063according to Ms. Ingrassia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m lucky\u200b that over the years, the supervisors and the town boards \u200chave been generous with funding\u200d for software such as that to make our job easier,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Recognition and Next Generation<\/h2>\n<p>In 2017, Ms.\u2064 Ingrassia was awarded the New York State Town Clerk of\u200b the \u2063Year for her personal and professional commitment \u2063to the local \u200bgovernment and \u2064community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the biggest thrill of my life\u2014out of 932 or so town clerks, they picked me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 letters were sent in support of Ms. Ingrassia to \u2062the Clerk of the Year Committee at the New York State Town\u200d Clerk\u200d Association, including one from a local funeral director who commended her responsive and responsible work attitude.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Pictures of family members of Wallkill Town Clerk Louisa Ingrassia at her office in Middletown, N.Y., on \u200bAug. \u20639, 2023. (Cara Ding\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ms. Ingrassia was also a former president of the Orange Sullivan Town Clerks Association.<\/p>\n<p>Her brother, Louis Ingrassia Jr., works in the town government and rose through the ranks from a laborer to the\u200c public works commissioner and highway superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Ingrassia and her siblings tried to \u200dpass down the Ingrassia\u2063 traditions to the next generation; of her two \u200dnieces and nephews, one is working as a\u200d schoolteacher, another is to become a veterinarian, and a third is to teach special education in\u2062 Middletown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though only two of them bear the Ingrassia last name, we always say that they\u200b all have Ingrassia blood,\u201d Ms. Ingrassia said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Louisa Ingrassia, Wallkill town clerk for a decade, aims to secure another two-year term.
