We cannot afford that kind of backpedaling on a national scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>New Guidelines for \u2064Admissions Decisions<\/h3>\n<p>In guidance documents issued on Monday,\u2063 his department and the Justice Department said that after that ruling, schools cannot allow their\u200d admissions \u2063decisions to be influenced by any \u2064demographic \u2063data related to an applicant&#8217;s race that they collect.<\/p>\n<p>But\u200c the departments said universities may consider how race has affected an \u2064applicant&#8217;s life, such as in an applicant&#8217;s essay. One example would be if someone wrote what it meant to be the first black violinist in a youth orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Universities may also pursue targeted outreach and recruitment to boost enrollment of underrepresented groups and may consider race and other factors like geography, financial resources, and family background in doing so, the \u2064departments said.<\/p>\n<p>Schools may also re-examine other admissions \u2063preferences, such \u200bas those given \u2064to &#8220;legacy&#8221; applicants related to alumni or \u2062donors&#8217; children, which &#8220;reduce opportunities for others \u2062who have been foreclosed from such advantages,&#8221; the departments said.<\/p>\n<p>The Education Department&#8217;s Office of \u200bCivil \u200dRights last month \u2063opened an investigation into whether Harvard racially discriminates by favoring &#8220;legacy&#8221; applicants, which civil rights groups say favors white applicants.<\/p>\n<p>(Reporting by Nate Raymond\u200c in Boston and Jarrett Renshaw\u200d in \u200dWashington; editing by Jonathan Oatis)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Biden administration has provided new guidance to colleges and universities, outlining how they can promote racial diversity within the boundaries of the law.
