This is the latest public setback for the embattled star,\u200b who was recently\u200d sued by \u200dthree former dancers \u200balleging that her company \u200dcreated \u200da <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/anti-trump-singers-streaming-numbers-tank-after-shes-hit-with-sexual-harassment-lawsuit\/\" title=\"Singer's streaming numbers plummet after sexual harassment lawsuit.\">hostile\u2062 work environment<\/a> of weight-shaming, sexual harassment, \u2064extreme stress, and other\u2062 problems. The resulting media \u2064coverage presented \u2062a \u2062damning story to\u200b the public, and Lizzo\u2019s online streams and downloads plummeted dramatically while \u2062her image transformed overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, as is common\u2064 in many of these situations, the \u200clawsuit generating \u2064such breathless negative media coverage is \u200citself quite weak. The suit is rife with questionable assumptions \u2062and leaps of logic. The\u2062 most publicly damaging allegations \u2014 such as those of weight \u2064shaming lack any substantiation \u200cwhatsoever. At times the lawsuit reads like the diary of a\u200c person afflicted by paranoia. Perhaps \u200dthis is why Lizzo and her team confronted the main\u200b claimant about her mental health at one point, \u2062as the lawsuit alleges.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Power\u2063 of \u200dDamaging Headlines<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet the flawed nature of the \u2064lawsuit \u2062has not prevented\u200d it from causing \u200ctremendous damage to Lizzo\u2019s image. Almost \u2062no one will actually read \u200bthe lawsuit or read \u2063it\u2063 with a\u2062 critical eye,\u200d as the claimants and their attorneys well know, \u200bbut bad headlines generated \u2064by the lawsuit are the \u2063real \u2064objective anyway.\u200c Those headlines can \u2063force an employer to the\u200b settlement table, \u200bno matter the facts: \u2062many of these suits \u200care blatant money grabs aimed at easy settlements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toxic workplace allegations\u2064 are becoming\u2062 increasingly \u200dcommon, particularly \u2063in situations with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-meets-with-tech-company-execs-about-cybersecurity\/\" title=\"Biden meets with tech company execs about cybersecurity\">high-profile targets<\/a> and heavy media attention. Often these allegations entail\u200c lawsuits, but in many cases, damaging media coverage \u200cis the goal \u2062of disgruntled \u2064ex-employees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently, \u2064talk\u2062 show \u2064host and\u200c pop\u200d star Kelly Clarkson was\u2064 accused by multiple\u200d anonymous employees in a hit piece \u2064by Rolling Stone. According \u200bto her accusers, her highly\u2063 rated \u2063\u201cThe Kelly Clarkson Show\u201d is run \u200cby overly demanding \u2062producers who don\u2019t\u200c pay lower-level staff what\u200c they believe they \u2064should \u2063make. Similar allegations dogged the canceled HBO Max\u2063 shows \u2064\u201cLovecraft Country\u201d and \u201cThe Other Two,\u201d \u200dwhile the \u2064Woody Harrelson series \u201cThe\u2063 White House Plumbers\u201d officially paused production to deal with workplace \u200dtoxicity claims. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In another arena, famous celebrity chef and restauranteur Barbara \u200cLynch \u2062found \u2063herself besieged in the press \u2064recently over her supposedly toxic\u2064 managerial style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you find such claims highly subjective, you are correct. \u2062In fact, the problem with many of these toxic workplace scandals is their basis on\u200d the claimant\u2019s\u200d subjective perception and understanding of events. Whereas the bar for establishing a toxic workplace claim was once quite \u200bhigh, it \u200bhas now become unnecessary to prove anything at all to launch a negative media \u2063campaign, damage the target\u2019s reputation, \u200bor even cancel \u200cthe \u2064target altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Lessons from #MeToo<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In \u200bhindsight, Ellen DeGeneres may have been the canary in\u2064 the\u200b coal mine. In \u20622020,\u200c the media gleefully disseminated and amplified the claims of \u200danonymous ex-employees who complained about the high-stress environment\u2064 on \u2064\u201cThe Ellen Show.\u201d\u2062 A number\u200b of these overwrought allegations bordered on the\u200d comical, and\u200b one might\u2064 wonder how\u2063 much of this much ado about nothing\u2063 is the result of a discordance between\u2064 generational worldviews: one can detect in many of these\u200b allegations\u2064 a particular whine indicative \u2062of \u200da younger,\u2063 self-entitled perspective. At any rate, despite any proof \u200dof actual misconduct, \u201cThe Ellen Show\u201d was\u2064 canceled within months.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CLICK HERE TO GET \u2063THE DAILY WIRE APP<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If \u200bit feels as if we have been down this \u2064road before, perhaps\u200c that is because the new #Toxic Work \u200cmovement feels\u2062 similar to #MeToo in a number of concerning respects. \u2064Both \u200bmovements contain\u200c threads of well-intentioned\u200d sentiment\u200b but \u200bare all too often weaponized to \u2062settle\u2062 personal \u2063grievances, generate media coverage, and make money. And just \u200cas heavily publicized #MeToo \u200dclaims often rely less on legitimate evidence of wrongdoing and more on subjective \u2062\u201cshe-said\u201d accounts, so too do many allegations of workplace toxicity\u200b presented\u200c in the media and \u200cin\u200d high-profile civil litigation. In far too many situations, the truth doesn\u2019t matter and it certainly doesn\u2019t outweigh the\u2063 power\u200c of \u200cdramatic, attention-grabbing\u2062 misconduct headlines. And of course, \u2064the reputational \u200band professional damage done\u2063 is generally irreparable\u200b even if the \u2062claims can be\u2062 legally invalidated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perhaps we\u200b would\u200d do \u200cwell to take a lesson \u2062from \u200b#MeToo\u2019s failures all\u2062 too clearly illustrated in\u200c the hoax \u2063against Johnny Depp exposed last year\u2062 in court and reserve judgment\u200c on toxic workplace\u2063 allegations \u200buntil such claims have \u200cbeen proved \u2063in court. \u2063A\u200c successful career takes decades \u200cto build but only\u200b hours\u2064 to \u200bdestroy in our\u200d current cancel culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kristen Lacefield,\u200b PhD, Lecturer\u2064 of English &#038; Media Studies.
