All of the \u2064defendants were\u200c charged with \u2062racketeering, which is used to target members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/authorities-seize-more-than-1-billion-worth-of-illegal-pot-in-the-desert\/\" title=\"Authorities Seize More Than  Billion Worth Of Illegal Pot In The Desert\">organized crime groups<\/a> and carries a penalty of up to \u206420 \u2062years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Meadows, Trump&#8217;s former White\u2063 House \u200dchief\u2063 of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John \u200bEastman were among those charged.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than abide by Georgia&#8217;s legal process for election challenges, the\u200d defendants \u200dengaged in \u2063a criminal, racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia&#8217;s presidential election result,&#8221; Willis\u200b said at a press\u200d conference.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump and\u2063 the \u200cother defendants have until noon EDT on\u2062 Friday,\u200b Aug. 25, to\u2064 surrender voluntarily, rather than face arrest, Willis said. She said she intends to try all 19 defendants together.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This one<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-charged-in-georgia-with-41-criminal-counts\/\" title=\"Trump faces 41 criminal charges in Georgia.\">-sided grand jury presentation relied<\/a> on witnesses who harbor their own personal \u200cand political interests,&#8221;\u200c Trump lawyers Drew Findling, Jennifer Little and Marissa\u200d Goldberg said\u2063 in a \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u200c look forward \u2064to a detailed review of this indictment, which is undoubtedly \u200bjust as flawed and \u2062unconstitutional as this entire process \u200bhas been,&#8221; Trump lawyers added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump,\u200b in a social media post overnight, \u200drepeated his verbal attacks against Willis and \u200ccalled\u200d the indictment a &#8220;witch hunt&#8221; as he\u200d seeks the White House\u200d a third time: &#8220;Why didn\u2019t they Indict 2.5 years ago? Because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 13 \u200dfelony charges against Trump matched \u2062those listed \u200con a document \u2064that \u2064was briefly posted on the court\u200c website\u2062 earlier in the day and reported by Reuters before it \u2064disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for those named either declined to comment or did\u200d not immediately respond to \u2062a request \u2063for comment.<\/p>\n<p>In a Jan. 2,\u200d 2021, phone call, Trump\u2062 urged Georgia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-ag-rejects-secretary-of-states-call-for-probe-of-gop-led-maricopa-county-vote-audit\/\" title=\"Arizona AG Rejects Secretary of State\u2019s Call for Probe of GOP-Led Maricopa County Vote Audit\">top election official<\/a>, Brad Raffensperger, to \u2063&#8221;find&#8221; enough votes to\u200d reverse his narrow loss in the\u2062 state. Raffensperger\u200b declined to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol four\u2063 days later in an\u2063 unsuccessful attempt\u2063 to prevent lawmakers from certifying Biden&#8217;s victory.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment cites a number of crimes that Trump or his associates allegedly committed from before \u200cthe Nov. 3, 2020, election until September 2022, including falsely\u200d testifying to lawmakers that election fraud had occurred and urging \u200cstate officials to alter the results.<\/p>\n<p>It says the defendants tried to subvert the\u2064 U.S. electoral\u200c process by \u200csubmitting false slates of electors, people \u200bwho make up the Electoral College that\u2064 elects \u2062the president\u2064 and vice\u200b president.<\/p>\n<h3>Breaching \u200bvoting machines, harassing election workers<\/h3>\n<p>It alleges that defendants breached voting equipment in a rural Georgia county, including personal \u2062voter information and images of ballots.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors also\u200b said the defendants harassed an election worker \u2064who \u2063became the focus of conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment reaches across state lines, saying that Giuliani, Meadows, and others called officials in Arizona, \u2064Pennsylvania, and elsewhere\u200b to urge them to change the outcome in those \u2063states.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment mentions 30 other co-conspirators, though they were not named or charged.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and has pleaded not guilty\u200b in three other criminal cases.<\/p>\n<p>He faces a New \u2062York\u200b state trial\u200d in \u200bMarch 2024 involving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-rejects-trump-bid-to-shield-financial-records\/\" title=\"Supreme Court Rejects Trump Bid To Shield Financial Records\">hush money payment<\/a> to a porn star, and a federal trial beginning in May\u200b in Florida for allegedly mishandling \u2064federal classified documents. In\u200c both \u200ccases Trump pleaded not\u200d guilty.<\/p>\n<p>A third indictment, in Washington federal \u200dcourt, accuses\u200b him of illegally\u200c seeking to overturn his 2020 election defeat. Trump denies wrongdoing in this case\u2063 as \u200cwell, and a trial date\u2062 has \u2064yet to be set.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia, \u2062once reliably Republican, has emerged as one\u2064 of a\u200d handful of politically competitive states\u200c that can determine\u2062 the outcome of presidential \u2064elections.<\/p>\n<p>Trump persists in\u200b falsely \u2062claiming he \u200cwon the November 2020 \u200delection although dozens of court cases and state probes\u2064 have \u200bfound no evidence to\u2062 support \u200bhis claim.<\/p>\n<h3>Not hurting his campaign<\/h3>\n<p>Strategists said that while the indictments could \u2064bolster Republican support for Trump, they may \u200dhurt him in \u2063the November \u200c2024 general election, when he will \u200dhave to win\u2064 over more independent-minded \u200dvoters.<\/p>\n<p>In a July Reuters\/Ipsos poll,\u2062 37% of independents said the criminal\u200c cases made \u2064them less likely to vote for him.<\/p>\n<p>Willis&#8217;s investigation\u200d drew \u200bon testimony from Trump advisers including \u200bGiuliani, who urged state\u2063 lawmakers \u2064in December \u20622020 not to certify the \u2062election, and Republican state officials like Raffensperger and Governor Brian Kemp, who refused to \u200cecho Trump&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-attorneys-argue-senate-impeachment-trial-unconstitutional\/\" title=\"Trump Attorneys Argue Senate Impeachment Trial Unconstitutional\">false election claims<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While many Republican\u200b officials have echoed Trump&#8217;s false election \u200cclaims, Kemp\u2062 and\u200c Raffensperger have refused\u200c to\u200d do so.<\/p>\n<p>Raffensperger has said there was no factual basis for Trump&#8217;s objections, while Kemp\u2062 certified \u200cthe\u2062 election results despite pressure from within \u200dhis party.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been mired \u200cin\u2063 legal\u200d trouble\u200b since leaving\u200c office.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the criminal cases, a New York \u2063jury in May found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming the writer E. \u2062Jean\u2063 Carroll and awarded her $5 million in a civil\u2064 case. A second\u2064 defamation\u200c lawsuit scheduled for January seeks $10 million\u2063 in\u200d damages.
