Time\u200d to get with the times, Grandpa.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disney Plus Gets Sus<\/h2>\n<p>It\u200c seems most of the bleeding \u2063is coming from its streaming platform,\u200c Disney Plus. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/09\/business\/media\/disney-earnings.html\">Disney\u2019s streaming operation \u200dlost $512\u2064 million<\/a> \u200c in the most recent\u200b quarter, \u2064the company \u200csaid,\u200b bringing\u2063 total streaming losses since 2019, when \u2063Disney+ was\u200c introduced, to\u200c more\u2062 than\u200c $11 billion. Disney+ lost roughly 11.7 million subscribers worldwide in the three months that ended \u2063July 1, for a new \u200btotal of 146.1 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Are you telling me no one wants to subscribe to Disney \u200cPlus to watch yet another \u200dbeloved fairy tale slaughtered and worn as \u2063a\u2062 skin suit by corporate harpies? <\/p>\n<p>Nearly 12 million subscribers canceling in three months seems like a lot, especially\u200d because Disney Plus is not exactly a luxury product. If you\u2062 have kids at home and they like Disney stuff, eight bucks a month for the cheapest tier \u2062is\u200c an OK deal, especially if you have kids\u2064 who want to watch their favorite movie every single day. I was \u200chappy to subscribe when my\u2064 kids were obsessed with \u201cStar Wars,\u201d \u2064\u201cMoana,\u201d\u200d and \u201cFrozen\u200b 2.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But something changed in the last few years. There is no longer a single new movie or show\u2064 on Disney Plus they want to watch. My\u2063 kids are over \u201cStar Wars\u201d and \u201cMoana\u201d and \u201cFrozen \u200b2\u201d \u2014 \u200cand they utterly ignore the\u2063 new movies. The live-action \u200cremakes especially leave them cold. None of them wanted to\u200b see the\u2064 reboots\u2062 of\u200d \u201cThe Lion King\u201d or \u201cBeauty \u200band the \u2064Beast.\u201d My 7-year-old daughter did not\u2064 even see \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d in \u2062the theater. <\/p>\n<p>Pixar \u200cmovies used to be events in my house. I have seen \u201cCars\u201d and \u201cToy Story\u201d approximately 75 billion times. Buzz\u2063 Lightyear was like my fourth son; my \u200ctoddler\u200b wore Buzz jammies every night for three years.\u00a0None of them, especially my\u2063 Buzz fanatic, wanted to see the giant stinking turd that\u200d was\u2062 \u201cLightyear.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t go\u200b to business school, but I seem to remember hearing \u200bthat when\u2064 demand goes down, prices get slashed. Instead, the smart\u200b Disney execs with Wharton degrees \u200cdecided to raise prices\u200d instead! <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe monthly price for access to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hbo-max-discovery-to-merge-into-single-streaming-platform-starting-summer-2023\/\" title=\"HBO Max &#038; Discovery+ To Merge Into Single Streaming Platform Starting Summer 2023\">ad-free version<\/a> of Disney+ rose to $11 in December, from $8.\u2063 Another hefty price increase is on the way. Starting\u200d on Oct. 12, the ad-free version will cost $14, Disney said. Hulu, which is also controlled\u200c by Disney, will begin charging $18 for ad-free access, up from $15.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strangely, none of the news stories\u200d I read mention the glaring, obvious reasons\u2064 why Disney Plus is no longer \u2064a must-have \u2064by Disney\u2019s core audience: families with children. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s very simple. Disney has \u2064made the\u200d purposeful decision to stop making content all kids and parents enjoy. Millennials might\u2062 watch a new movie once. Little girls \u2062watch the original\u2064 \u201cLittle Mermaid\u201d animated \u200cmovie a dozen times. <\/p>\n<p>But Disney is unbothered by the rebellion among \u200dformer\u200b Disney loyalists. To prove where its \u200cnew allegiance lies, it even gave \u200dMinnie Mouse,\u200d iconic spokeswoman for the brand\u200d worldwide, \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/companies\/disney-loses-over-7-million-subscribers-ahead-of-price-hike\/ar-AA1f6zk2\">the Bud Light treatment:<\/a> \u201cDisney recently \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/disney-partners-gender-fluid-influencer-clothing-ad\">partnered with an influencer<\/a> \u2064who \u2062identifies as gender-fluid for a clothing ad, showing followers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tiktok\">TikTok<\/a> how to dress\u2064 like Minnie Mouse.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>What 5-year-old girl doesn\u2019t want\u200b a grown \u2063man in a petticoat to\u2062 show her how\u2064 to\u2064 get\u2063 dressed?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u2064Vanishing of a Generation<\/h2>\n<p>The \u200breason \u2063for the decline, however, goes far beyond bad content. Disney Plus, after all, \u2063still carries all the\u200b classics that made the company\u200d into the juggernaut it\u200b became. You can still watch \u200cthe\u2063 originals of all the princess movies and experience authentic children\u2019s entertainment, albeit with content warnings on everything\u200c telling you \u200bthese old movies are full of \u201charmful stereotypes\u201d and \u201coutdated themes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The reason \u2064for the decline, \u2063and why its subscribers are not coming back, is that <em>they were\u2063 never\u2063 born. <\/em>Disney\u2019s streaming profits are drying up because our newborn population\u200b is.<\/p>\n<p>Plummeting \u200bbirth rates in the United\u2062 States have\u200b essentially wiped out huge numbers \u2064of \u2064potential \u200dDisney Plus watchers. Their parents just never bothered to create them. Worse, Disney movies \u2014\u200b and its feminist, pro-abortion, girlboss executives and princess stars \u2062\u2014 actively encourage women not to become\u200d mothers. Snow \u2063White \u200bis not allowed \u2062to fall in love and marry the prince\u2062 \u2014 if she did, she might not get to run for Senate, or \u2062even live her dreams as a mid-level marketing\u200b manager in Disney Consumer\u2062 Products. <\/p>\n<p>Which is,\u2064 of course, why Disney has clumsily attempted to \u200drebrand \u2062itself for \u201cDisney Adults,\u201d\u200b the thirty-something childless millennials \u2064who are\u200d happy to spend their disposable (child-free!) income on park tickets, rainbow Mouse\u2063 ears, and \u2062Disney Plus streaming\u200d services. All these\u200b new Disney movies \u200bare \u2064now targeting this\u2063 demographic \u2014 which, while sizeable now, is obviously (see\u200b second-quarter losses) not \u200cgoing to be enough \u200cto \u200bclose the gap.\u00a0They don\u2019t make Mouse ears in cat \u2062sizes. (Yet!) Crucially, these people are not going to \u200dhave anyone to pass along \u2063their \u200blove of the Disney brand \u200cto. <\/p>\n<p>Disney is suffering from a problem it helped engineer. \u2064Classic princess movies used to inspire young \u200bgirls to\u2063 want to find their prince and get married one day. All those traditional and\u200d therefore bad messages\u200d have been\u200d \u201cupdated\u201d to \u201creflect\u200d the world we live in now,\u201d of \u200dcourse.\u00a0Welcome to the \u2064dystopian, child-unfriendly \u200bworld Disney<em> helped create. <\/em>It made this childless bed, \u200cand now\u200b we all have to lie\u2063 in it.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.childstats.gov\/americaschildren\/pop_fig.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Child Stats website <\/a>tells the tragic tale in \u200ba few stark charts.\u00a0In 1965, the \u200bpercentage of the U.S. population under 17 was about 37 percent.\u200d In \u200c2023, it fell to roughly 22 percent of the\u200c population. And the younger you go, the lower the number\u2064 gets.<\/p>\n<p>Disney can make\u200b all the \u2063live-action princess reboots it \u2064wants. But the one \u200cthing it can\u2019t make\u2063 is \u2063a\u2063 live human child.
