The charges include aggravated assault,\u200b home invasion, \u2062obstruction of \u2063justice, and hindering \u200ba prosecution. This case involves five former deputies from the Rankin \u200dCounty Sheriff\u2019s office and one former\u200c officer from the Richland Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>The deputies involved in this case are \u2062Brett McAlpin, Christian Dedmon, Jeffrey Middleton, Hunter Elward, and Daniel Opdyke. In a press release, Fitch expressed\u2063 gratitude for the collaboration with state and federal \u200ccounterparts\u200b in delivering justice for the victims. She \u200dacknowledged that the actions of these six officers have damaged the trust between law enforcement \u2064and the community. However,\u200d Fitch also highlighted\u2063 that the majority of men and women in\u2063 uniform are dedicated\u2063 to protecting Mississippians.<\/p>\n<h2>Federal Charges \u200dand\u200b Brutal Acts<\/h2>\n<p>In\u200b addition to the state charges, the\u200c defendants have also pleaded guilty to federal charges, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mississippi-deputies-called-goon-squad-plead-guilty-to-state-charges\/\" title=\"Mississippi deputies, dubbed 'Goon Squad,' admit guilt in state charges.\">including civil rights conspiracy<\/a>, deprivation \u2064of rights under the\u2064 color \u2063of law, discharging a firearm\u2064 during a crime of violence, and conspiracy\u200d to obstruct justice. During court proceedings, three of the defendants admitted to being part of \u2064the \u2064&#8221;Goon Squad,&#8221;\u200c a\u2063 group known for\u200c using\u2063 excessive force \u200cwithout reporting it.<\/p>\n<p>The incident that led \u200cto \u200dthese charges involved the defendants entering a home without a warrant \u200cand\u200b subjecting two\u2064 black men, Michael\u200c Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker, to abuse and torture. The defendants \u2064handcuffed, arrested, and \u2063assaulted the\u2062 victims, using racial slurs and a stun \u200dgun. \u200bThey\u200b also forced the victims to ingest \u2062liquids, assaulted them with a sex object, and planted\u200c a \u200dgun on \u2063one \u2064of them. Christian Dedmon and Hunter Elward have \u2063pleaded guilty to additional charges of \u2063home invasion. Elward,\u2062 who \u2063performed a &#8220;mock execution&#8221; by \u200dshoving \u2062a \u2063gun in Jenkins&#8217; mouth and pulling the trigger, faces additional charges of aggravated assault, which could result in up to\u2062 30 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The incident caught the attention of attorney Malik Shabazz, who filed\u200d a $400 million lawsuit against the defendants. Shabazz described the assault as one of the worst\u2062 incidents of police misconduct in U.S. history and emphasized the\u200c need for accountability \u2062in policing.<\/p>\n<h2>Sheriff&#8217;s Response<\/h2>\n<p>Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey \u200dexpressed hope \u2063that the \u200cguilty pleas would bring some sense of justice to the victims. He reiterated the department&#8217;s commitment to holding accountable any deputy or suspect who breaks the \u2064law.\u2063 Bailey also emphasized the \u200cimportance of an unbiased and\u2064 impartial investigation, which \u200buncovered the criminal \u2062actions of the former officers.
