This comes as the South Korean and U.S. militaries prepare to\u2063 begin major drills next week to enhance their joint capability against North Korea&#8217;s evolving nuclear threats.<\/p>\n<p>Kim&#8217;s push for increased weapon production coincides with U.S.\u200d officials&#8217; belief that Russia&#8217;s defense minister recently engaged in discussions \u2064with North Korea \u2063regarding the\u200c sale of more weapons for \u200dRussia&#8217;s war \u2062with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cKorean Central News Agency reported that \u2063Kim visited factories producing tactical missiles, mobile launch platforms, armored vehicles, and\u2062 artillery shells. During his\u2064 visit to a missile factory, \u2064Kim set a\u2064 goal to\u2062 &#8220;drastically boost&#8221; production \u2064capacity to meet the \u2063needs of\u2063 front-line military units.<\/p>\n<p>Kim also emphasized the need to build modern missile launch trucks and \u200bincrease the production of large-caliber multiple rocket\u200b launcher shells. He even test-drove a new\u2064 utility combat armored\u200c vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Since his high-stakes\u2063 diplomacy with then-President Donald\u2064 Trump collapsed in 2019, Kim has been \u2062focused on expanding his nuclear\u200d and\u200d missile arsenals. In 2022 \u2064alone, North Korea&#8217;s military\u2063 has conducted over 100 missile \u2063tests, many \u200dof which \u2063were intended to\u200d warn the U.S. and South Korea about their joint military training \u200cexercises.<\/p>\n<p>Experts believe that Kim&#8217;s ultimate goal is to leverage his modernized weapons arsenals to secure concessions from the U.S., such as sanctions \u2062relief, when diplomatic negotiations resume.<\/p>\n<p>As the U.S. and South Korea \u200bprepare to\u200d commence their summer military exercises, North \u2063Korea may conduct more \u200dweapons tests.
