He was eventually\u2063 released, but three\u200d of his fellow inmates who went to collect their \u2062belongings were summarily executed. The fear and \u2064uncertainty forced my great-grandmother to flee Madrid\u200d with her four young children, seeking refuge in \u200dSantander.<\/p>\n<p>The Aftermath<\/p>\n<p>The war took a heavy\u200d toll on my\u200b great-grandparents. They\u200c lost their home, savings, possessions, and were\u2063 separated \u2064from each other until the war&#8217;s end.\u200b Countless other religious individuals\u2062 suffered a \u200dsimilar\u200d fate, with thousands of priests,\u2062 monks, \u2062nuns, and laypeople losing their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Lessons for Today<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bFBI&#8217;s targeting of Catholics and the \u200ccultural\u200c demonization \u2063of Christians should not be\u2064 ignored.
