And that is exactly what my budget proposal will do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cameron, who followed Mr. Beshear as the state\u2019s attorney general, called the governor \u201cthe catch-and-release candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:640px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron speaks to reporters in Washington on Oct. 12, 2021. \u200b(Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr. Beshear \u2063allowed the\u2062 early release of some nonviolent inmates during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Cameron noted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNow, during an election year, he is trying to rewrite his record. I am still the\u2062 only candidate in this race with a plan to reduce crime. And I am the only candidate in this race who actually has the relationships\u2063 in the legislature to deliver,\u201d said \u2064Mr. \u2064Cameron, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump.\u200c \u201cBeshear is the only candidate in this race who\u2064 has released 1,700 criminals back onto our streets,\u200b nearly a third of which went on to commit \u2063felonies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cameron introduced a 12-point crime \u2064reduction plan that includes increased penalties for drug traffickers, the \u200bcreation of a $5,000 recruitment and retention bonus for officers, and the development\u2064 of\u2062 a \u2062culture\u2063 that publicly supports law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u200bCameron has also proposed \u2063pursuing the death penalty\u2063 against anyone convicted of murdering a police officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this list is \u200cnot exhaustive, these initiatives directly address the rise of crime, drug trafficking, and overdoses and the need to retain and recruit officers in our commonwealth,\u201d Mr. Cameron said. \u201cUnder a Cameron \u2063administration, Kentucky will be the\u200c best place in America to be a police officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063general election will take place on Nov. 7.<\/p>\n<h2>Kentucky to &#8216;Feel Safe&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>A\u2064 report from \u2062the Kentucky State\u2063 Police in July showed that serious crime\u2062 rates across Kentucky dropped in 2022. Homicides,\u2063 robberies, and drug offenses \u200dsaw double-digit reductions, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Animal \u200ccruelty, bribery, \u200dand extortion\u2063 were the only serious crimes that increased in arrests\u2064 and reported offenses from 2021 to \u20642022, the report indicated.<\/p>\n<p>Information for the report was gathered from the \u2064National Incident-Based Reporting System,\u200d which is the standard\u2064 reporting system \u200dfor the FBI. The data includes reports from 98 percent of Kentucky\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/feds-buying-chinese-drones-despite-military-warning-that-they-pose-threat-to-national-security\/\" title=\"Feds Buying Chinese Drones Despite Military Warning That They Pose Threat To National Security\">law enforcement entities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not enough that overall \u200dserious crime has gone down,\u201d Mr. Beshear \u200bsaid. \u201cPeople need to feel safe\u2064 too. \u2063That perception is important. And that means we have to continue to do more every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Early Indicator \u2064for 2024<\/h2>\n<p>The\u200b Kentucky \u200cgovernor\u2019s race is one of the nation\u2019s \u2064most closely\u2063 watched elections this year \u2062and could provide hints of what will happen in presidential and congressional campaigns \u2062in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Beshear is the son of a former Kentucky governor, serving \u200cin\u2064 a state that\u2062 former President Donald\u200d Trump won \u200dby 25 points \u2062in 2020. He is running for a second term after winning in 2019 by less than a percentage point in a contentious \u200drace \u2062against former\u200d Gov. Matt Bevin.<\/p>\n<p>A Morning Consult poll in October 2022 showed that Mr. Beshear was rated one of the 10 most popular\u200d governors in the United States with a 59 percent approval rating.<\/p>\n<p>At a campaign stop earlier this month, \u2062Mr. Beshear reflected on a message \u2064from President Joe Biden, pointing to job creation from economic development and record-low \u2064unemployment rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re on a historic winning streak, you don\u2019t fire the\u2064 coach,\u201d Mr. Beshear said. &#8220;You don\u2019t sub out the quarterback. \u2063You keep that team on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:1024px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>U.S. President \u200cJoe Biden greets Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear after speaking \u2063to the press in an area \u200cdamaged by Friday&#8217;s tornado in Dawson Springs, Kentucky on Dec. 15, 2021. (Scott\u200b Olson\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr. Beshear has tried \u200bto \u200ddistance\u200d himself from President Joe \u200bBiden.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview \u200cwith The Associated Press\u200d in late December, Mr. Beshear criticized Mr. Trump as well as Mr. Biden\u200c during an \u200dinterview with The\u2062 Associated Press in late December. He insisted that \u2064he did not need\u2063 or seek Mr. Biden\u2019s help for his \u2063gubernatorial re-election\u200b campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis campaign isn\u2019t going to be about national figures,\u201d Beshear told \u200dAP. \u201cIt\u2019s not going\u2064 to be about any other figures. It\u2019s going to be about the people of Kentucky. So you shouldn\u2019t expect me\u2064 to bring in anyone, whether they\u2019re popular\u200b or not popular in Kentucky. I\u2019m willing\u200d to\u2064 run on\u2064 my record. I\u2019m \u200bwilling to run on my relationship with the people of Kentucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A survey released last week\u200d by Democrat-affiliated Public Policy Polling showed Mr. Beshear has a\u2062 49 \u200cpercent to 41 percent lead\u2062 over Mr. Cameron, with 10 percent saying they \u200care \u2064\u201cnot sure\u201d who they will support.<\/p>\n<p>The survey\u200d indicated that Mr. Beshear has a 58 percent job approval rating, while 39 percent of the 737 respondents disapprove \u2063of his performance.<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky residents want to hear about education, healthcare, public safety, and infrastructure \u200cissues instead of \u201cculture war\u201d topics, Mr. Beshear\u200d said at a press conference after the poll results were announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the people of\u200b Kentucky want their governor\u2019s race to \u2063never go\u2064 to\u200d the gutter, and they\u200d want it to be \u200cabout those issues that they worry about each\u200d and every day,\u201d Mr. Beshear said.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans\u200d have\u2063 criticized Mr. Beshear\u2019s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming that he did not work with\u200c the GOP-controlled state legislature in enacting mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe closed \u2063down Main Street and bent \u200dover\u2062 backward for Wall Street,\u201d Mr. Cameron \u2062said.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have also reminded voters that \u2062Mr. Beshear\u2063 vetoed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/christian-college-takes-biden-to-court-over-trans-mandate\/\" title=\"Christian College Takes Biden to Court Over Trans Mandate\">bill banning transgender youth<\/a> from medical treatment, which was\u200c overridden by \u200cthe GOP-controlled legislature.<\/p>\n<p>In March, citing his \u201cfaith\u201d and claiming that \u2063it would\u2063 \u201cendanger the children of Kentucky,\u201d Mr. Beshear vetoed Senate Bill 150, a measure that the\u2062 Kentucky GOP said was introduced to protect children \u2064\u201cby preventing minors from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/crime-gender-reassignment-surgeries-take-center-stage-in-kentucky-gubernatorial-race\/\" title=\"Crime and gender-reassignment surgeries in focus in Kentucky governor race.\">accessing life-altering sex change\u2063 surgery<\/a> and drugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, Kentucky\u2019s Republican-controlled legislature \u200doverturned Mr. Beshear\u2019s veto and passed S.B. 150 into law, making transgender procedures for minors illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062measure bans children younger than 18 from getting transgender procedures like\u00a0puberty blockers, hormone therapies, surgeries, and other gender-transitioning services.<\/p>\n<p>The new law also prevents teachers in public schools through the \u200cfifth grade from discussing in classrooms topics related to human\u2064 sexuality, \u2064including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.<\/p>\n<p>Also under the measure, local school \u2064districts cannot force staff members to use pronouns or\u200c titles inconsistent with a \u2064student\u2019s biological sex.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kentucky Gov.
