Unfortunately, their \u2063concerns were disregarded.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, Mr. Ridgeway emphasized, &#8220;This terrible \u2062decision\u2064 creates \u2062significant obstacles for our students who aspire to pursue careers in Science, Technology, \u200cEngineering, and Math (STEM).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Early data presented by \u2063SFUSD showed a temporary\u200b decrease in Algebra 1 failure rates and an increase in the enrollment of \u2062students, particularly Black and Latino \u200dstudents, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tennessee-top-ed-official-pushed-californias-math-is-racist-plan\/\" title=\"Tennessee Top Ed Official Pushed California\u2019s \u2018Math Is Racist\u2019 Plan\">higher-level math<\/a> courses. However, the shift in the course sequence did \u2063not address the racial disparities in math education as \u200cpromised by SFUSD. Research\u2062 conducted by Stanford\u2064 University \u200bGraduate\u200c School of Education revealed that &#8220;large ethnoracial gaps in advanced\u2062 math\u2063 course-taking remained&#8221; even after the change.<\/p>\n<p>Under the previous course sequence, \u200c13.8 percent of Latino students and 3.9 percent\u200d of African American students completed Algebra 2\u2064 by the end of 10th grade. However, these\u200b numbers have dropped to 6.2 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively, under \u2062the new course sequence, according to education watchdog Families for San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Completion of Algebra 2 in the 10th \u200cgrade is an important milestone as \u2063it determines whether students can pursue more advanced \u2062mathematics courses instead of the\u200c SFUSD-specific &#8220;compression&#8221; course. Mr. Ridgeway expressed concern for students \u2064who have the ability to excel in \u200cmath but lack the knowledge \u2062and resources to navigate the\u2064 system.<\/p>\n<p>The Stanford research also revealed \u200dthat SFUSD&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/san-francisco-parents-call-for-algebra-1-to-be-returned-to-8th-grade-curriculum\/\" title=\"SF Parents Demand Return of Algebra 1 to 8th-Grade Curriculum\">equity-focused mathematics\u200b reform initially led<\/a> to a 15 percent decline in participation in Advanced Placement (AP) math, particularly among Asian\/Pacific-Islander students and \u200bin AP Calculus. However,\u2064 the\u200b reductions were mitigated\u200d by the growing participation in acceleration options, which come with \u2064additional costs and require extra effort from students.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ridgeway shared the success story of \u200chis \u200cgranddaughter, Josie, who attended summer classes in algebra before entering \u2063Lincoln High\u200d School as a 9th grader. As a result, she was\u200b able to take Algebra 1 and geometry in the same year,\u200c followed\u2062 by Algebra 2 in the 10th grade.\u2062 Josie even took a pre-calculus UC Berkeley\u200c accredited course and was prepared to take calculus before graduating.\u200c However, these additional classes cost Mr. Ridgeway over $1,800.<\/p>\n<p>As an African American student, Josie Ridgeway represents one of the district&#8217;s\u200b few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/east-coast-universities-conduct-anti-racist-audit-in-libraries\/\" title=\"East Coast Universities Conduct \u2018Anti-Racist Audit\u2019 In Libraries\">success stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SFUSD Superintendent Matt Wayne acknowledged the shortcomings of the \u2064current math approach during a mathematics \u200dworkshop meeting on \u2063May 25, stating, &#8220;Based on our data, our\u2064 current approach to math in SFUSD is \u2062not working.
