Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the \u2064House Foreign Affairs Committee,\u2063 announced on this \u2062week\u2019s\u2062 \u201cFox\u200b News Sunday\u201d that he \u200cwill block U.S. financial aid \u2062to Afghanistan unless he receives \u201cassurances\u201d that it \u200cwill not go to the \u2063Taliban.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Shannon Bream, a journalist\u200b and\u2064 host of the Fox segment, said,\u2064 \u201cThere\u2019s \u2063a new report out \u200cfrom \u2063the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-blasted-by-terrorism-foreign-policy-experts-over-afghanistan-decision-such-an-avoidable-shame\/\" title=\"Biden Blasted By Terrorism, Foreign Policy Experts Over Afghanistan Decision: \u2018Such An Avoidable Shame\u2019\">special inspector general<\/a> overseeing Afghanistan reconstruction. The Washington Free Beacon has \u2063this headline from the report.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThey say the administration is giving $2.35 billion\u2063 to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.\u200b So what do you tell American \u2062taxpayers about their dollars flowing to that group as you said,\u200c that was critical in what happened\u2064 at\u200b Abby Gate and \u2063now is clearly, you know,\u200d disrespectful\u200d is\u2063 the nicest \u2062way that I can say that\u200d to women, to girls to religious minorities. Those are U.S. tax dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>McCaul replied to her query, stating, \u201cI\u2019m prepared in my position to\u200c put a hold on this funding until we get assurances it is not \u2062going right into the hands of the\u00a0Taliban.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThey are repressing women. They can\u2019t \u2063go out of\u2063 their homes. They \u2062can\u2019t get educated. Women can\u2019t be hired by these NGOs, these\u200c charitable organizations\u200c in Afghanistan,\u200d and we are paying the \u2063money. \u2064The U.S. taxpayers are\u200b funding this. We need some assurance that this is\u200b going to go to the right hands and it\u2019s \u2063going to help the women in Afghanistan. If the Taliban can\u2019t assure us \u200dof \u200cthat, I\u200b think we need to be prepared \u200cto cut that funding off as a \u2063stick\u200c rather than giving them just a carrot,\u201d McCaul continued.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Since the tumultuous departure of American \u200bforces in August \u20622021, \u200bthe U.S.\u2064 has contributed\u200b more than \u200b$8 billion in aid to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>John Sopko, the\u200b special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction\u200d and head\u200d of\u200c the\u2062 U.S. government watchdog\u200d for the \u200cwar, said in April that the\u200c United States may have contributed\u2063 billions of dollars in taxpayer funds to the Taliban and Afghan terror organizations since the withdrawal of American soldiers, but he admitted that even he does not know\u200d the \u200bentire\u200c magnitude of the \u2063situation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, as I sit here today, I cannot assure \u200cyou we are not now\u200c funding \u2064the Taliban,\u201d \u200bspecial\u00a0inspector \u2062general\u00a0for Afghan\u00a0reconstruction,\u00a0John\u200b Sopko, said at \u200da House\u200b Oversight Committee hearing. \u200c\u201cNor \u2064can I assure you the Taliban are not diverting \u2064it from the intended recipients, which are\u200b the Afghan people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sopko reportedly \u2064has\u200c more than 30 years of expertise\u2064 in \u2062oversight and \u2062investigations\u2063 as a prosecutor, congressional counsel, and senior federal government advisor. Individuals \u200bin his top leadership\u2064 team\u2062 also \u2064have substantial expertise\u2062 in military and foreign policy concerns.<\/p>\n<p>SIGAR, or the Special Inspector General \u2063for Afghan Reconstruction,\u200d was established in 2008 to oversee the billions of dollars \u2062spent by the United States in the war against the\u2064 terrorist\u200b Taliban \u2064group.<\/p>\n<p>Sopko \u200chad told legislators that the refusal of the State Department and the\u200b U.S. Agency for \u2064International Development to \u2064provide information to SIGAR, and\u200c what \u200che claims is their legal obligation, is making it difficult for the agency to \u2064carry out \u2063its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccaul-i-will-put-a-hold-on-afghanistan-funds-until-assurances-it-is-not-going-to-taliban\/\" title=\"McCaul: No funds for Afghanistan until Taliban assurance.\">congressionally \u2063mandated oversight role<\/a> over\u200c the aid money still flowing\u2062 to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged Congress to assist SIGAR in \u2063obtaining information from the State Department and USAID,\u2062 which handles\u200b civilian foreign \u200baid \u2064and is directed by\u200c the secretary\u2063 of state.<\/p>\n<p>However, officials familiar with the process said at the time that the\u2063 Biden administration asserted that \u200cthe U.S. is no\u2064 longer participating\u200c in Afghanistan \u2063reconstruction and \u200dthat\u200b SIGAR is beyond\u2062 the\u200c inspector general\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n<p>The White House\u2019s \u200doversight\u200d spokesman \u200bat the time, Ian Sams, accused \u2063House Republicans in the past of \u201chypocritically\u201d criticizing Biden over the pullout while \u200bfailing to act on the Afghan\u2064 Adjustment Act, which would provide additional funding and a road to permanent residency for\u2062 tens of thousands of Afghans residing in \u2064the U.S. on temporary status.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be \u2064very clear: with their politically motivated \u2062attacks, these MAGA House\u2062 Republicans are hoping \u2062to distract from their own failure to even agree upon,\u200c much\u2063 less act on, solutions that are desperately needed today to \u2063protect the progress \u200cthe Biden Administration has made to \u200dsafely evacuate tens of thousands of people from Afghanistan at the end of the war,\u201d Sams wrote in the memo.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the \u2064past, Sams worked on Hillary\u200b Clinton\u2019s failed 2016 presidential campaign and later moved on \u2062to being a staffer for Kamala Harris.
