However, in California, the biggest\u200c opponent of child marriage bans \u200dseems to be Planned Parenthood, along with the Children&#8217;s Law\u2062 Center and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/phoenix-homeless-creating-trash-nightmare-aclu-steps-try-prevent-city-cleaning-streets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Civil Liberties\u2063 Union<\/a> (ACLU).<\/p>\n<p>Planned\u2062 Parenthood&#8217;s reasoning\u200b for opposing child marriage is somewhat vague. A spokesperson told the \u2064Times that while they &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/planned-parenthood-is-fighting-californias-proposed-ban-on-child-marriage-to-ensure-abortions-continue\/\" title=\"Planned Parenthood opposes California's child marriage ban to protect abortion access.\">strongly\u2064 support protecting youth<\/a> from abuse of all \u2062kinds,&#8221; they believe that states \u200bshould not \u200cinterfere with the reproductive rights of\u2064 minors and\u2062 their ability\u200c to make decisions \u200cabout\u2062 their health and lives.<\/p>\n<p>However, Fraidy Reiss, the founder \u200band executive director of \u2063Unchained At Last (UAL), a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stimulus-check-update-payments-worth-up-to-500-to-be-sent-to-qualified-californians-in-eight-days\/\" title=\"Californians eligible for stimulus checks will receive up to 0 in just eight days.\">nonprofit\u200b organization dedicated<\/a> to ending forced and child marriages in the \u200bU.S., rejects Planned Parenthood&#8217;s\u2063 assertion. Reiss argues that child marriages often result in forced sexual relations and the loss of sexual and reproductive rights for the survivors.<\/p>\n<p>Reiss told\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/california-child-marriage-ban-faces-opposition-planned-parenthood-1817362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>,\u200c &#8220;The idea that banning child \u200dmarriage \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/just-like-the-good-old-days-joe-biden-invades-syria-with-convoy-of-us-troops-and-choppers-on-first-full-day-as-president\/\" title=\"Just Like the Good Old Days: Joe Biden Invades Syria with Convoy of US Troops and Choppers on First Full Day as President\">human rights abuse<\/a> that destroys girls&#8217; lives\u200b \u2014 \u2063might somehow \u2064undermine\u200b girls&#8217; rights is\u2062 preposterous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Underreported Cases and Alarming Statistics<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062exact number of child marriages in California is unclear.\u2063 While the Department of Public Health has recorded only 48 marriages involving minors since 2019, UAL estimates that over \u20628,000 children \u200bwere\u200d married in the state in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Reiss suggests\u2062 that this significant gap in numbers is evidence of underreporting of child\u200b marriage cases\u2062 in California.<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, UAL estimates that nearly 300,000 minors were\u200b legally \u200dmarried between 2000 and 2018,\u200d with\u200d 23,588 of those\u200c marriages occurring in California, which has the second-highest number of \u200dchild marriages after Texas.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u200dtheir analysis,\u2062 the average\u2062 age of the married minors was 16\u200c and 17, \u200cwith some cases\u200d involving\u2063 children as young as 10. UAL is now urging\u200c California to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>In\u200d 2017, California lawmakers attempted to\u2064 ban child marriages, but opposition from the ACLU, the Children&#8217;s Law Center, and\u2064 Planned\u200c Parenthood resulted in regulations that did little\u200d to \u200dprohibit it.
