None of the finalists are \u2062white men.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the nominees are four black people \u2014 a \u2064pastor, a \u2062formerly \u2062enslaved woman, a civil rights \u2064hero and an \u2063Army pilot \u2014 as well as Native Americans\u2063 who inhabited the area when Savannah \u200cwas\u200d founded and a group of women who in the 1950s \u2062put Savannah on the path to preserving its past.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Expanding the Story of Savannah<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of what name is picked, \u200cit will be a name \u2063that \u200brepresents more diversity in Savannah and sort of expands the story that \u200cSavannah tells about itself,\u201d said Kristopher Monroe, chairman of the local \u2063Historic Site and\u200c Monument Commission, which made its recommendations earlier this month.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The square near the\u200b southern edge of Savannah\u2019s downtown historic district has been without a name since Nov. 10,\u2063 when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hundreds-of-minneapolis-police-officers-left-after-getting-slammed-now-city-spending-millions-for-new-recruits\/\" title=\"Hundreds Of Minneapolis Police Officers Left After Getting Slammed. Now City Spending Millions For New Recruits.\">city council voted unanimously<\/a> to get rid of the name Calhoun Square.<\/p>\n<p>For more \u2064than 170 years, the space was\u200b named\u2063 for John\u2062 C. Calhoun, a South Carolina politician who served in \u2062Congress and as U.S.\u2063 vice president \u2064in two administrations before his death in\u200b 1850.<\/p>\n<p>Calhoun\u200b was \u2063among\u2063 Washington\u2019s most vocal\u2064 supporters\u200b of \u200dslavery in the decades\u200c preceding the Civil War, which\u200d made him a target \u200bof activists seeking to rid \u2064public spaces\u2064 of statues \u2064and other markers honoring the Confederacy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Honoring Unsung \u200bHeroes<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis square has\u200d a lot of memories for what used \u200dto be,\u201d\u200d said Patt Gunn, who gives guided tours focused on Savannah\u2019s black history. \u201cIt is honorable to say we can remove Calhoun.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gunn leads a group of activists that wants the square\u200b to honor Susie King Taylor, who assisted the Union Army as a\u200d nurse \u2063during the\u200b Civil War and went on to establish multiple schools for\u2063 freed \u200cblack people.<\/p>\n<p>The recommended finalists also include the Rev. George Leile,\u200c who\u2063 in 1777 founded one of America\u2019s\u200d oldest black churches\u2064 in Savannah. W.W. Law led the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/climate-crazies-uk-eco-group-compares-itself-to-martin-luther-king-jr\/\" title=\"Climate Crazies: UK Eco Group Compares Itself to Martin Luther King Jr\">civil rights campaign<\/a> that peacefully desegregated the city\u2019s schools, stores and restaurants\u2063 in 1963. Army Maj. Clayton Carpenter, a special operations pilot, saved his crew but perished in a 2014 \u2064helicopter crash during training \u2064in Savannah.<\/p>\n<p>The other \u2062finalists are the name \u200c\u201cCreek Square\u201d \u2063for the Native Americans \u2063who lived in the area, and\u2062 \u201cSeven Sisters Square\u201d for\u200c the activists who kickstarted Savannah\u2019s\u200b historic preservation movement to protect old homes and buildings\u200d from demolition.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone agrees \u2062Calhoun deserved to lose the distinction.<\/p>\n<p>Savannah resident\u2063 David Tootle filed a lawsuit last month asking a\u2062 Chatham County judge\u200c to block the city council\u2019s upcoming vote. He argues that \u200bremoving \u200csigns bearing Calhoun\u2019s name from the square violates\u200d a 2019 Georgia law passed \u2064to protect public monuments such as Confederate memorials \u2062from removal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a major \u200dfigure in American history, whether we like him or not,\u201d Tootle said of \u2062Calhoun. \u201cI don\u2019t\u200c agree with some \u2063of the things\u200b he did, but \u200bit\u2063 doesn\u2019t take away his contribution to the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said the city has not violated the state law.
