Protesters called\u2063 for Tokyo to abandon the plans and expressed anger toward Seoul for endorsing the discharge \u2062despite alleged food safety risks.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s rally\u200c was the latest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/under-pressure-trudeau-gives-up-emergency-powers-invoked-to-tackle-truckers-protests\/\" title=\"Under Pressure, Trudeau Gives Up Emergency Powers Invoked To Tackle Truckers\u2019 Protests\">weeks-long protests<\/a> since the International Atomic Energy Agency approved the Japanese discharge plans\u200c in July, saying\u2064 the process would \u2063meet international \u2063safety standards and pose negligible environmental and health impacts.<\/p>\n<p>The safety of the wastewater\u200c release plans\u2062 also has been advocated by the government of South Korean President \u2064Yoon Suk \u2064Yeol, who in recent months has \u2063actively taken steps to repair long-strained ties with its fellow United States \u200bally in the face of growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-soldier-captured-north-korea-recent-discipline-issues-reportedly-made-strange-noise-apprehended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North\u2064 Korean<\/a> \u200cnuclear threats.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 Japanese government has said the wastewater release is set to start this \u2063summer, but\u200d it has \u2064not confirmed a date.<\/p>\n<p>A massive earthquake and tsunami\u2064 in 2011 destroyed \u2063the Fukushima \u200dplant\u2019s cooling systems, \u200ccausing three reactors \u2064to melt \u200cand contaminate their cooling water.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing raincoats and holding signs that \u2063read <strong>\u201cWe oppose the disposal of \u200cFukushima\u2019s \u2064contaminated water\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cNo radioactive material is \u2064safe for the \u2064sea,\u201d<\/strong> the demonstrators on Saturday marched in light rain through the streets of downtown Seoul. The rallies were \u200cproceeding peacefully, and there were no immediate reports of clashes or injuries.<\/p>\n<h3>South Korea&#8217;s Efforts to Address Concerns<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-south-korea-scrambles-fighter-jets-fires-off-shot-dmz-crossed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Korea<\/a> has been trying to calm people\u2019s fears of \u2062food\u200b contamination \u200band environmental risks ahead of the release of Fukushima\u2019s wastewater, including expanding radiation tests on seafood at the\u200c country\u2019s \u2063major \u2062fish markets and even \u200ctesting sand from its southern and\u2063 western beaches.<\/p>\n<p>None of the tests\u2064 have\u200c triggered\u200d safety concerns, Jeon Jae-woo, an official at South Korea\u2019s Ministry of \u200bOceans and Fisheries, said \u2062during a briefing Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Park Ku-yeon, first vice minister of the Office for Government\u2064 Policy Coordination, said South \u2063Korea was hoping to wrap up working-level \u2064consultations with Japan next week over allowing \u2064South Korean \u200bexperts to participate in \u200bthe monitoring of the release process.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal opposition lawmakers controlling the country\u2019s National Assembly have accused Yoon\u2019s government of putting people\u2019s\u2064 health\u2063 at risk while trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/yellen-says-direct-communication-can-resolve-us-china-trade-woes-2\/\" title=\"Yellen: Talking can fix US-China trade issues.\">improve bilateral ties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic \u200dParty said this week that it plans to file\u2063 a complaint with the United Nations \u200dHuman Rights Council to highlight what \u200cit \u2063says are perils posed by \u200bthe release of Fukushima\u2019s wastewater, and question whether the International Atomic\u200b Energy Agency (IAEA) properly reviewed the risks before greenlighting\u200d the discharge plans.<\/p>\n<p>The party\u200d also urged Yoon \u2064to reverse his position and use a trilateral summit later this month with Japanese Prime Minister \u200bFumio Kishida and\u2062 U.S. President\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/joe-bidens-legal-team-reportedly-negotiating-interview-special-counsel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe \u2062Biden<\/a> \u2062to \u200dstate Seoul\u2019s opposition\u2064 to the wastewater release.<\/p>\n<h3>The Controversy Surrounding Fukushima&#8217;s Wastewater<\/h3>\n<p>The safety of Fukushima\u2019s wastewater has been a sensitive\u2062 issue for years\u2062 between the U.S. allies.
