\u200bSarajevo rock musicians and the Irish \u200dband U2 during the Bosnian capital\u2019s 1992-1995 siege has opened the city\u2019s annual\u200b film festival, with U2 members Bono and The Edge as founded \u2064towards \u200bthe end of the Bosnian war by a group of \u2063film enthusiasts, has\u2063 become southeastern\u2064 Europe\u2019s largest such event,\u200d showcasing \u2064235 \u200cfilms this \u200dyear.<\/p>\n<p>Produced by Hollywood stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, \u2064\u201cKiss\u2063 the Future\u201d depicts the determination of young \u200cSarajevo musicians to find an escape from the horrors of war by putting on rock concerts in the basement of the Academy of \u2062Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p>U2 \u2013 one of the\u200b world\u2019s most popular bands at the time \u2013 became \u2062involved after an aid worker persuaded \u200bthem to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sarajevo-film-festival-opens-with-tribute-to-music-and-movies-in-times-of-war\/\" title=\"Sarajevo Film Festival honors music and movies during wartime.\">carry live satellite link-ups<\/a> with Sarajevo during their European\u200d concert tour in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>After \u2062the end of the Bosnian war, in\u200c 1997, \u2063U2 staged a huge concert in Sarajevo, which Bono ended by urging \u200cthe crowd to \u201cKiss\u200d the Future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The basement of the\u2064 drama \u200bacademy was also used as an impromptu wartime cinema, showing films smuggled\u200c into \u200bthe city by foreign visitors and with details of upcoming screenings spread by word of mouth. <\/p>\n<p>Anxious to keep moviegoers safe, organisers dug a hole in the wall for the audience to enter the basement without being exposed to snipers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCulture was one of the main\u2064 things \u2064that gave us the power to \u200bsurvive that period,\u201d said\u2063 Mirsad Purivatra, a founder of both the wartime cinema and\u200d the Sarajevo Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>He described how \u2064people would pack into the basement to attend cultural events and meet friends, rushing home\u200b before curfew.<\/p>\n<p>Images of filmgoers\u200b and the underground rock shows by photographer Milomir Kovacevic Strasni are being displayed for an exhibition taking\u200c place\u200b to mark the 30th anniversary of the Apollo wartime \u2064cinema as part of the film festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese photographs are, of course, witnesses\u2062 of
