Wade\">pro-abortion legislation<\/a>\u2063 will be barred from seeking re-election once their \u200ccurrent terms end, the Oregon secretary\u200c of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/patagonia-donates-1-million-to-defending-democracy-dana-loesch-fires-back-patagonia-has-13-factories-in-china\/\" title=\"Patagonia Donates  Million To \u2018Defending Democracy,\u2019 Dana Loesch Fires Back. \u2018Patagonia Has 13 Factories In China\u2019\">state confirmed<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p>In a Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/newsroom\/pages\/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=166930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a>, Democratic Secretary of State \u200bLaVonne \u2064Griffin-Valade said she was merely \u200bupholding <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Oregon_Measure_113,_Exclusion_from_Re-election_for_Legislative_Absenteeism_Initiative_(2022)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Measure 113<\/a>, \u2063an amendment passed\u2062 in 2022 stipulating that legislators \u2062with over 10 unexcused absences from legislative sessions are ineligible for re-election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy decision honors the voters\u2019 intent \u200cby enforcing the measure the way it was commonly understood when\u200b Oregonians added it to our\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-democrat-state-senators-issue-statement-calling-for-cuomos-emergency-powers-to-be-stripped\/\" title=\"New York Democrat State Senators Issue Statement Calling For Cuomo\u2019s Emergency Powers To Be Stripped\">state constitution<\/a>,\u201d Griffin-Valade said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: Sec. of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade \u2063makes official her\u2064 position\u2063 that lawmakers who walked \u2063away this year \u2062cannot run in next year\u2019s election, per Measure 113. Tim Knopp and Brian Boquist writing to Griffin-Valade with a view to challenging the \u200cdecision.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/pdf\/2023-05-30%20walkout%20Petition%20for%20Declaratory%20Ruling_1685544891326.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> says the absence of the GOP lawmakers was \u201ca \u200dparliamentary strategy to prevent the passage of certain legislative proposals and for reasons \u200dthey \u200dconsider existential.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Should these lawmakers be barred from seeking re-election?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Yes<\/li>\n<li>No<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The letter argues \u2062that such walkouts \u201cinvolve \u2062expressive acts which are\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rnc-fires-back-at-trump-says-it-has-every-right-to-use-his-name\/\" title=\"RNC Fires Back at Trump, Says It Has \u2018Every Right\u2019 to Use His Name\">protected political speech<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans also \u2063point out language in Measure 113 that implies that they should still be eligible to participate \u2062in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/scaros-think-biden-has-no-chance-in-2024-dont-forget-jimmy-carter-in-1980\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 \u200celection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/9-gop-lawmakers-disqualified-from-running-for-re-election-after-walkout-protesting-abortion\/\" title=\"9 GOP lawmakers disqualified from re-election after walkout protesting abortion.\">amendment specifically disqualifies offending lawmakers<\/a> from holding office \u2064\u201cfor\u2063 the term following the election after the member\u2019s current\u2064 term is completed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since their terms end on Jan. \u200b14, 2025, the legislators assert that under Measure 113, they would only be\u200d ineligible for office following the 2028 election.<\/p>\n<p>Griffin-Valade\u2019s office responded to those claims in\u2063 the\u2062 news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary\u200b found no\u2064 suggestion prior to\u2063 enactment \u2014 in the voters\u2019 pamphlet, media, or otherwise \u2014 that the measure was understood \u2064or intended to allow absent legislators to serve an additional term after accumulating too many absences, and then be disqualified \u200cthe term after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nine Republicans and one \u200cindependent in question staged their walkout beginning in\u2063 May \u2063to stall the Democratic\u200c agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers objected to measures promoting abortion, transgender ideology and gun control, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/wireStory\/republicans-oregon-senate-end-week-walkout-blocked-bills-100115959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC \u2063News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their \u2063walkout became\u2063 the longest in Oregon\u2019s \u200dhistory before they secured concessions \u200dfrom Democrats on those issues.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/9-gop-lawmakers-disqualified-running-re-election-walkout-protesting-abortion\/\">9\u2063 GOP Lawmakers Disqualified\u2063 from\u2063 Running for \u2063Re-Election After Walkout Protesting Abortion<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oregon&#8217;s Secretary of State, LaVonne Griffin-Valade, confirmed that Republican state lawmakers, who orchestrated a six-week walkout to hinder pro-abortion legislation, will be ineligible for re-election after their current terms.
