(Robyn Beck\/AFP \u2062via\u2064 Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;At this point in the pandemic, and\u200b following the State\u2063 of California lifting masking \u200crequirements in healthcare facilities, \u200dwe are allowing hospitals and healthcare facilities\u200c to create policies that tailor\u200d to their needs,&#8221; a \u200bspokesperson for the Los\u2064 Angeles County Department of \u2062Health told The Epoch Times\u2062 in\u200d an email.\u2063 &#8220;We know many facilities will opt to keep\u200d masking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The county&#8217;s vaccine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/californias-health-care-worker-vaccine-mandate-amended-to-include-visitors-3977752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mandate<\/a> for most healthcare workers went into\u2064 effect two \u200dyears ago in August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles County continued enforcing\u2063 vaccine and mask mandates five\u200c months\u200c after\u200c California ended its statewide emergency and cancelled the orders on April 3.<\/p>\n<h2>New Variant \u200bArrives<\/h2>\n<p>The World Health \u200dOrganization (WHO) has identified \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/09082023eg.5_ire_final.pdf?sfvrsn=2aa2daee_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EG.5<\/a> as the\u2062 newest variant of the virus, with China and the United States reporting the most cases of the strain. In Los Angeles,\u2064 the variant has been attributed to \u200babout 7 percent of cases, \u2064according to\u2063 the county health department.<\/p>\n<p>County health officials have seen an uptick in hospitalizations related to the virus\u200d recently, reaching a weekly average of 333 new cases\u2062 and 293 \u200bhospitalizations this week, \u200daccording \u200bto\u200b the department.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the county has reported 3.4 new hospital cases\u2063 per 100,000 people in the past week, \u2063which is considered \u200b&#8221;low&#8221; by the\u2062 federal Centers\u2063 for \u2064Disease Control, the health department said. If that\u200b number reaches 10\u200b out of 100,000 people, the county would\u2064 move into\u2062 a higher classification.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though we have seen a slight \u200cuptick in COVID hospitalizations in\u2064 the past few weeks, \u2063we are still near \u2062record low COVID hospitalizations compared to the rest of the pandemic,&#8221; a department spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The average number of people who have\u200b died from the virus \u2062in July is also at\u2062 its \u200blowest point since March 2020, according to the\u200d department.<\/p>\n<p>However, as children return to school in August and September, \u2063the number of cases could rise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/l-a-county-health-officials-urge-residents-to-wear-masks-at-home-to-protect-vulnerable-one-america-news-network\/\" title=\"L.A.
