The clinic is part \u2062of the Oregon Health\u2063 and\u2064 Science University (OHSU).<\/p>\n<p>Having a primary care physician is especially important to her because\u200c of her\u2064 medical history,\u200b Ms. Barbera told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s had a liver transplant, which requires lifelong care. She struggles \u200dwith anxiety and depression. And at 55, she&#8217;s\u200c currently battling breast cancer and\u2064 was scheduled to undergo\u200c a double mastectomy.<\/p>\n<p>But now, she&#8217;s been told she&#8217;ll \u200dneed to find a new physician\u2014one that&#8217;s not affiliated with OHSU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This letter is to\u200c inform you that, effective immediately, you \u2064are\u200b discharged from receiving medical care at \u2062the Richmond \u200bFamily Medicine Clinic,&#8221; a letter to\u2062 her from the clinic \u2062states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This action \u200cis being taken\u200d because of ongoing disrespectful and hurtful remarks about our LGBTQ\u2063 community and \u2064staff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;I Do Not Feel Comfortable&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The\u200c conflict began, \u200cMs.\u200b Barbera said,\u200d after she sent\u200b a written message to her doctor.\u2063 In it, she explained that because of her outspoken views on transgenderism, she&#8217;s faced death threats and \u2064rape\u2062 threats \u2063from \u2062transgender activists online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do\u2063 not feel comfortable, as \u200da gender-critical woman, who believes gender to be a nonsense, and\u2063 sexed bodies to be a reality,&#8221; Ms. Barbera wrote in the message, which was shown\u2062 to The \u2064Epoch Times. &#8220;I do not feel comfortable coming into \u200bRichmond \u200d [clinic] with \u2064that \u200benormous transgenderism \u200bbanner hanging like a Nazi flag \u200cbehind the\u2062 reception desk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where is the flag for women? \u2064For children?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-cancer-patient-says-shes-denied-medical-treatment-after-objecting-to-pride-flag\/\" title=\"Oregon cancer patient denied treatment for objecting to Pride flag.\">opposes radical \u2062gender ideology<\/a>, Ms.\u200b Barbera describes \u2064herself politically as &#8220;a lefty-left, Bernie Bro, \u2062liberal Democrat, registered\u2063 since 1988.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And after [the election of President Donald] Trump, I guess \u2063everybody couldn&#8217;t handle anything anymore. And the Left is\u200d as crazy as the Right. They&#8217;re worse. The Right at \u200bleast talks sense and \u200cdeals in reality,&#8221; she told The\u200d Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Still, she doesn&#8217;t agree with the political Left&#8217;s embrace of transgenderism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is daunting to go for \u200cmedical treatment with that banner proclaiming that what I am\u2014an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walsh-a-child-is-born-with-three-legal-dads-proving-yet-again-that-the-slippery-slope-is-real\/\" title=\"WALSH: A Child Is Born With Three Legal \u2018Dads,\u2019 Proving Yet Again That The Slippery Slope Is Real\">adult human female<\/a> \u2063(calling\u2062 myself\u2063 that now is hateful per OHSU) &#8230; is not a reality,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Barbera asked the doctor for\u2064 a telephone appointment to \u2062discuss how she could access medical care without &#8220;walking under a banner that seeks to negate all I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After \u2062that, when she \u2063called the clinic to make an appointment, staffers refused \u200dto \u2062let\u200c her leave a message for the doctor, she said. Then, they hung up on her, she said.<\/p>\n<p>When she called back and asked to \u2064speak with another staffer, \u2063she said the representative declined. Two months\u200b later, Ms. Barbera received the letter dismissing \u2063her as\u2063 a patient.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Barbera&#8217;s request for a mastectomy to fight\u2064 cancer \u2062has been declined. Her\u2064 oncologist\u200c and surgeon now\u2062 see\u2062 her at other facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Social Media Stir-Up<\/h2>\n<p>Without a primary care physician managing her\u2063 overall health care, Ms. Barbera said she feels &#8220;very scared&#8221;\u2064 and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pence-to-blame-in-many-ways-for-jan-6-riot-trump-says\/\" title=\"Pence to blame 'in many ways' for Jan. 6 riot, Trump says\">sought legal advice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am a liver transplant\u200c recipient with breast \u2063cancer, facing \u200bdouble mastectomy at the end of\u2062 August, and now I have \u200bno primary care doctor,&#8221; she wrote on X, previously known\u200b as Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Her post has been viewed more than 4 million times. The reaction has \u2064been\u2063 mixed.<\/p>\n<p>Some X users expressed sympathy or outrage that a longtime patient facing cancer would be denied care. Others suggested \u2064she&#8217;d\u2064 been wrong\u2062 to object\u200b to the transgender flag. Some\u2062 wrote\u200b that they hoped she&#8217;d die from her illness.<\/p>\n<p>OHSU\u200b stands by its decision to deny her \u2064care.<\/p>\n<p>Patients have a right to care delivered &#8220;free from abuse, discrimination\u200c or\u200b harassment based on age, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, \u200dculture, language, sex, sexual orientation, \u200cgender identity and expression, physical or mental disability, religion, socioeconomic\u200c status, marital status, military or reserve\u200c status,\u200c or any other\u2062 status protected by law,&#8221; Sara Hottman, the associate director of media relations for OHSU, told The Epoch Times\u2062 in a written statement.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Hottman said patients,\u2063 families, and visitors are responsible for avoiding discriminatory, profane, \u200cderogatory, or threatening behavior.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These behaviors can result in limitation of visiting privileges and impact access to care at \u200cOHSU,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Barbera insists,\u200c &#8220;I made no \u2062statements about anything other than \u2064a menacing political flag,&#8221; which she describes as &#8220;hostile to women\u2063 and dangerous for \u2063children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OHSU&#8217;s website emphasizes a commitment to helping patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are recognized by the state\u200b of Oregon for care that puts patients at the \u200dheart of everything\u200d we\u200b do,&#8221; \u2063the \u200bsite reads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Patients should be able to \u2062see providers \u2063who understand and can meet their diverse needs\u2014providers who appreciate and respect differences, \u2063whether ethnic background,\u2064 race, language,\u200c religion, abilities, sexual orientation or culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Medical Ethics<\/h2>\n<p>The treatment Ms. Barbera has endured is &#8220;outrageous,&#8221; according to Charles Rosen, M.D., president and\u2063 co-founder of the Association for Medical\u2062 Ethics.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rosen\u2064 also is a professor at\u200b the \u200cUniversity\u2062 of California, and his \u2063views don&#8217;t \u200brepresent the views\u2062 of his school, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t abandon \u200da patient based on political views,&#8221; he told The Epoch Times. &#8220;I&#8217;ve never heard<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A cancer patient in Oregon can no longer receive treatment at her doctor&#8217;s office or any affiliated clinics.
