Pritzker (D-Ill.) signed the act on January 10<sup>th<\/sup> in response \u200cto \u200dthe \u200bmassacre at Highland Park that took seven lives and injured 30 \u200cothers during\u200c the Fourth of\u2062 July parade in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>Those in favor of the law have labeled the \u2062guns as \u201cassault weapons,\u201d but gun shop owners have argued that true assault weapons, for example \u2062those\u2063 used by the United States military, are already illegal. <\/p>\n<p>Many county authorities across Illinois \u2064have claimed that they will not be abiding by the ban as\u2062 it goes against the <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-2\/\">2<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-2\/\">nd<\/a>,<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-5\/\">5<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-5\/\">th<\/a>,<\/sup> and <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-14\/\">14<sup>th<\/sup><\/a>  amendments of \u2064the U.S. Constitution. <\/p>\n<p>Representative Dan Caulkins (R-Ill.) filed the lawsuit, asking\u2062 the court for\u2062 summary judgment on the grounds that\u200b the Illinois Constitution\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/the-constitution\/amendments\/amendment-xiv\/clauses\/702\">Equal Protection Clause<\/a> \u200b is violated by the ban on assault rifles. <\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by Pritzker, it was announced that \u2062the state had sided with the ban.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI am pleased\u2064 that the Illinois Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the Protect\u200b Illinois Communities Act,\u201d Pritzker said. \u201cThis is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-supreme-court-rules-assault-weapons-ban-constitutional-in-4-3-vote\/\" title=\"Illinois Supreme Court upholds 'assault weapons' ban in close vote.\">commonsense gun reform law<\/a> to keep\u200c mass-killing machines off of our streets and out of our schools, malls, parks, and places of worship. Illinoisans deserve to feel safe in every corner of our state, whether \u2064they are attending a Fourth of July\u2064 Parade or heading to work, and that\u2019s precisely what the Protect Illinois Communities Act\u2063 accomplishes. This decision is \u2063a win for advocates, survivors, and families\u200b alike because it preserves \u200cthis nation-leading legislation to combat gun violence and save countless lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Senator\u00a0Andrew\u200b Chesney (R-Ill.) issued his \u200bown statement regarding the ruling. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI am disappointed, yet not surprised, that the highly \u2064politicized Illinois Supreme Court has chosen to act yet again as a rubber stamp for the Illinois \u2064Democratic Party,\u201d he\u2063 said. \u201cAs long as Democrat lawmakers \u200ccontinue to go \u2062after law-abiding citizens rather than the criminals who abuse their gun rights, crime in all forms will\u200c continue to rise.\u201d  <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Due to the \u200cban \u200cbeing upheld, more than 170 \u2064semi-automatic \u2062firearms are prohibited from \u200bbeing sold or owned.
