This comes after the Justice Department requested one of its criminal trials against Trump to commence just before \u2064the\u2063 Iowa caucuses on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Smith, along with assistant\u2062 special counsels Molly Gaston and Thomas Windom, asked for Trump to be in court for trial beginning on\u200d Jan. 2 of next year. The DOJ\u2062 argued that Trump should be tried in just a few months as primary \u2062voting begins on charges \u200cstemming from &#8220;conspiring to \u200boverturn an election&#8221; in the interest of a &#8220;speedy trial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Government proposes that trial begin on January 2, 2024, and estimates that its case in chief will \u2064take no longer than four to six weeks,&#8221; prosecutors argued. He further criticized the proposed trial date, calling it a blatant example of election interference.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for Jan. 15, while the New Hampshire primary is scheduled \u2062for Jan. \u206323.\u2062 If \u2064the \u2064trial were to begin on Jan. 2 and conclude within six weeks, Trump\u200d could still be in court by the time voters in Nevada and \u200dNew York head to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is currently facing charges\u2063 in the government&#8217;s 2020 election case,\u2063 including conspiracy to defraud the \u200dU.S. government, conspiracy \u2062against civil rights, and two counts of \u200cobstruction.
