Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul\u2063 appealed against those decisions\u200d to\u200b the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The law, known as the Protect Illinois \u200bCommunities \u200dAct, was signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in January 2023 and went \u2064into \u200ceffect \u200con\u200b Jan. 11. It prohibits certain types of semi-automatic rifles and magazines that hold more than 12 rounds of ammunition.<\/p>\n<p>Under the act, existing firearms are grandfathered in if owners register them \u2063and pay\u200d a fee. The \u2062law also extends the term \u200cof an \u2063Illinois Firearms \u200cRestraining \u200bOrder\u200b (FRO) from six\u200c months\u2063 to one year and expands the list of people who can request a FRO from the\u200d court.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the act\u200b raises the age to obtain a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-supreme-court-upholds-states-assault-weapons-ban\/\" title=\"Illinois' 'Assault Weapons' Ban Upheld by Supreme Court.\">firearm owner\u2064 identification card<\/a> (FOID) to 21, with exceptions for those serving in\u200d the U.S. military or Illinois National Guard. It also allows guardian-supervised hunting or shooting\u200c sports.<\/p>\n<h2>Act\u200b Inspired by \u2062Mass Shooting<\/h2>\n<p>State\u200c Rep. Bob Morgan, a \u200bDemocrat, sponsored the \u200dact after a\u2064 mass\u200c shooting on July 4, \u20632022. During a July 4 \u2063parade in\u2063 Highland Park, Illinois, a 22-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-seal-sets-dem-reverend-straight-after-he-mocked-armed-churchgoers\/\" title=\"Former SEAL Sets Dem Reverend Straight After He Mocked Armed Churchgoers\">man opened fire<\/a>, killing seven people and injuring many others.<\/p>\n<p>While the law \u2063has faced opposition from \u200cmost of Illinois&#8217;s county sheriffs and several state attorneys, Governor Pritzker\u2062 has vowed to enforce it and take \u200clegal\u200b action if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>The law\u200b has \u200calso been \u2064challenged \u2064in federal \u2063court, with U.S. District Judge Stephen McGlynn in East St. Louis presiding over the case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Illinois Supreme Court, in a 4-3 ruling, upheld the state&#8217;s ban on specific semi-automatic rifles and &#8220;large capacity magazines.&#8221; Released on Aug. 11, the decision stated that the law does not infringe upon the Illinois Constitution&#8217;s equal protection or three-reading requirement for special legislation.
