The new suicide death data reported\u200b by CDC\u200d illustrates\u2063 why. One life lost to suicide is one too many. Yet, too many people still believe asking for help is a sign of weakness,&#8221; Mr. Becerra said. &#8220;The Biden-Harris Administration is \u2064making unprecedented investments \u200bto transform how mental health is understood, accessed, and treated as part of President\u200b Biden\u2019s Unity Agenda. In those older than\u200b 65, the\u200d CDC reported an 8.1\u2062 percent increase year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>Many middle-aged and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-suicide-rates-hit-record-high-of-nearly-50000-in-2022-provisional-cdc-data-show\/\" title=\"US suicide rates reach all-time high of nearly 50,000 in 2022, per CDC data.\">elderly people experience problems<\/a> \u2064like losing a job or losing a spouse. Debra \u2062Houry, the CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/canadas-ontario-finds-two-cases-of-virus-variant-first-seen-in-uk\/\" title=\"Canada\u2019s Ontario finds two cases of virus variant first seen in UK\">chief medical officer<\/a>, said it was important to reduce stigma and other obstacles to them getting assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, among the racial and ethnic groups the CDC tracks, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders had the largest increase in suicide in 2022, with a 15.9 percent rise, the CDC data\u200d show.<\/p>\n<p>Multiracial\u2062 individuals saw suicide\u2064 rates\u2064 increase by 7.9 percent while rates rose 5.7 percent among Asians and 3.6 percent among black or African Americans.<\/p>\n<p>However, the CDC noted a decline in suicide rates among \u200cAmerican Indians\/Alaska Natives, where suicide rates declined 6.1 percent year on\u2063 year.<\/p>\n<p>The health agency also noted a decline in suicide \u200brates among individuals aged 10\u201324, approximately 8.4 percent.<\/p>\n<p>While it is unclear what prompted \u2062the rise in the number of suicides among Americans, experts have said the increase could be driven\u200b by a multitude of\u2064 factors such as increasing rates \u200dof depression and the limited availability of \u2063mental health services.<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, which for many led to job losses, financial instability, isolation,\u200d and \u2064loneliness, may have also played a role.<\/p>\n<h2>Pandemic Prompts Anxiety, Depression<\/h2>\n<p>A March 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/issue-brief\/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the Kaiser Family \u200dFoundation (KFF) found that by early 2021, \u200d4\u200d in 10 adults reported symptoms consistent with anxiety and depression over the course of the pandemic, although that figure dropped to approximately 3\u200d in 10 \u2063adults as the pandemic continued.<\/p>\n<p>Deb Stone, a behavioral scientist \u200bat the CDC Injury\u2062 Center, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2023\/apr\/12\/suicides-jumped-in-2021-after-two-year-decline-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Times<\/a> earlier this year that\u200b suicide rates might \u2064be \u2064stable or even decline \u2062during a disaster, and rise afterward, &#8220;as the longer-term sequela of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially among populations struggling with preexisting inequities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Press-Media\/Press-Releases\/2023\/New-NAMI-Ipsos-Poll-Finds-Low-Familiarity-of-988-Suicide-Crisis-Lifeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> conducted\u2063 by\u2064 the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and\u2063 published last month found that the majority of Americans (82 percent) \u2064are still\u2062 not \u200bfamiliar with or have not heard of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a resource aimed at helping people in mental\u2063 health, substance use, and suicide crises get connected to the support they may need.<\/p>\n<p>Final data \u200cfrom the CDC on suicide rates will be available later this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today\u2019s report underscores the <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2020.
