In \u200cthis \u2063series, Up For Debate, the Washington Examiner will\u200d look at a key issue or policy every day up until \u2062debate\u2064 day and where \u2062key candidates stand. Today&#8217;s story will examine issues\u2063 of energy and climate change.<\/p>\n<h3>Energy and Climate\u2064 Priorities in the \u20622024 Republican Primary Race<\/h3>\n<p>Energy and climate \u2062priorities will\u2062 be a key\u200c focus \u200cin the 2024 Republican primary \u2063race as the candidates look \u200dto position\u200b themselves on oil and gas production, \u200cenergy security,\u200d and sustainability\u200d topics such as\u2064 environmental, social, and governance, or ESG, spending.<\/p>\n<p>While the \u200ccandidates espouse a wide range \u2062of views on \u2062these topics, each hopes to present himself or herself as\u200c a clear alternative to President\u200b Joe Biden,\u2063 whose policies, they \u200bargue, are crippling U.S. economic growth, pushing up consumer prices, and threatening \u200bU.S. competitiveness while driving an outsize \u200breliance on China for\u200c manufacturing\u200d and production.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Up For \u2064Debate: \u200cTrump,\u200c DeSantis,\u2062 and 2024 GOP Hopefuls&#8217; Stance on the Justice Department<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Under the Biden administration, the United\u200b States has cracked down on transportation emissions and approved billions of dollars \u2063of spending\u200b for\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/top-biden-advisers-consulting-clients-stand-to-benefit-from-new-govt-spending\/\" title=\"Top Biden Adviser\u2019s Consulting Clients Stand To Benefit From New Gov\u2019t Spending\">clean energy tax incentives<\/a>, including for \u2062wind, solar, and electric vehicles. It has also introduced dozens \u2064of proposed rules\u200d to create efficiency standards for \u2062home appliances, \u2063set aside federal\u200c acres for land conservation and restoration, and cap carbon emissions \u200dfrom power \u2062plants.<\/p>\n<p>But \u200bthe debate will also take \u2062place against \u200ca\u200d backdrop of \u200da fast-warming climate and extreme weather events that continue to play \u200bout in real time, threatening millions \u200dof people with blistering\u2063 hot temperatures, extreme drought,\u2064 and \u200cwildfire smoke\u200c that poured in from\u200c Canada, choking out parts \u200cof the country for days.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the first\u200c debate, here is a look at\u2063 where\u2064 the candidates \u2064stand.<\/p>\n<h3>Donald Trump<\/h3>\n<p>As president, Donald Trump withdrew or scaled back more than\u200b 100 environmental rules and regulations. Trump withdrew the U.S.\u2062 from the 2015 Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming \u2064below 2 \u2064degrees Celsius compared to preindustrial levels, and intervened on behalf \u200dof certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-must-create-new-taxes-eliminate-natural-gas-to-meet-climate-pledge-analysts-say\/\" title=\"Biden Must Create New Taxes, Eliminate Natural Gas to Meet Climate Pledge, Analysts Say\">fossil fuel projects<\/a>, such as\u200c the \u200bDakota Access pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>His \u200cadministration repealed\u200d the Clean Power Plan, \u2064weakened protections\u2063 under\u2062 the\u200c Endangered\u200d Species Act, and revised the \u200cMercury and Air Toxics Standards, among many other \u200cthings.<\/p>\n<p>Trump vowed to\u200b reverse Biden\u2019s clean energy policies \u2063if elected for a second term, lambasting what he described as Biden\u2019s \u201cGreen New\u2062 Deal atrocities\u201d in\u200b a recent campaign video.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly accused Biden\u2064 of \u201cwaging war\u201d\u2064 on the U.S. auto\u2063 industry through the Transportation Department\u2019s \u200dproposed fuel economy standards and the EPA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/epa-official-finally-testifies-to-house-on-controversial-emissions-rules-after-refusal-in-may\/\" title=\"EPA Official Testifies on Emissions Rules to House After May Refusal\">proposed tailpipe emissions rule<\/a>, which targets 60% \u2064EV adoption by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>He also \u200dappears to be \u200bactively\u2063 vying for support \u2064from the United Auto Workers, the largest \u200cU.S. auto union that has historically endorsed Democrats but has \u200bsoured on\u2062 Biden\u2019s ambitious EV goals and what it views\u200b as a lack\u200d of commitment to workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope\u2062 United Auto Workers is \u200blistening to this because I think you better \u200dendorse Trump. Because I am going to grow your business, and \u200dthey are destroying\u200c your \u200bbusiness,\u201d \u2063Trump said. \u201cThey are \u2064absolutely destroying your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Ron DeSantis<\/h3>\n<p>Gov. \u2062Ron DeSantis\u200b (R-FL) has\u2062 styled himself\u200c as \u2064a &#8220;Teddy \u200dRoosevelt \u200dconservationist&#8221; on environmental topics, in contrast with his campaign\u2062 presentation as a \u2062culture warrior and\u2064 anti-&#8220;woke&#8221; conservative.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis has taken certain unorthodox steps for a Republican governor of a red state, including pouring billions into Everglades\u2063 protection\u200c projects, \u200cdirecting the\u200b Florida Department \u2064of Environmental \u2064Protection to\u2064 oppose fracking and \u2064offshore drilling \u2064in 2019, and appointing a \u201cchief resilience officer\u201d to help prepare\u2064 the state for the \u201cenvironmental, physical and \u2062economic impacts of sea level rise.\u201d These could open him up to criticism in the primary election.<\/p>\n<p>But environmental advocates in Florida say he \u200cis far from centrist, citing his refusal to use the term \u201cclimate change,\u201d which he said he views \u200bas \u201cleft-wing stuff,\u201d the bill he signed to crack down on the use\u2063 of ESG goals in investing, and\u200c his\u200c failure as governor to set any renewable energy targets for \u200cFlorida or goals to phase out \u200bfossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>When it\u2062 comes to climate change, DeSantis &#8220;is an\u200d ostrich putting its\u200b head\u200b in the sand,\u201d said\u2064 Aliki Moncrief, the executive director of the Florida \u2062Conservation \u2062Voters.<\/p>\n<h3>Nikki Haley<\/h3>\n<p>Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who\u2062 also served as Trump\u2019s ambassador to the United Nations, would \u200bwithdraw the\u200c U.S. once\u2063 again from the\u200b Paris climate accord if elected and would roll back the Biden administration\u2019s clean \u2062energy tax subsidies \u2064and regulations, including the\u200b proposed tailpipe \u2063emissions \u200crule.<\/p>\n<p>Haley outlined the broad strokes of her energy plan earlier\u200d this year at\u200c an oil rig in Midland, Texas, a location \u2062designed to highlight her commitment to U.S. energy producers.<\/p>\n<p>As\u200b president, Haley said, she would stop \u2062the federal government\u2019s control of \u2063how much energy is produced\u2064 by U.S. oil and gas companies or where they \u200bproduce it.<\/p>\n<p>Haley\u200b also accused Biden of \u201cdemonizing\u201d U.S. energy producers and noted that during her tenure as U.S.\u200b ambassador to the U.N., U.S. adversaries &#8220;didn&#8217;t want us to be energy independent.&#8221; She has \u200bstated on more than one \u2064occasion that she\u2063 sees energy security and national security\u2063 as inextricably linked and\u2063 vowed to stop \u200cenergy exports\u200d from Russia \u2063and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Haley \u201cbelieves that when it comes to climate change, capitalism and economic freedom aren\u2019t the problem \u2014 they\u2019re the \u200bsolution,\u201d Ken\u200b Farnaso,\u2063 a spokesman for Haley, told the Washington Examiner in an \u2062email.<\/p>\n<h3>Chris Christie<\/h3>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Chris \u200cChristie\u2064 has described climate change \u2063as an \u201cexistential crisis.\u201d In \u200cfact, Christie\u2062 was \u2064one\u200b of the first\u200c Republicans to do so,\u2062 saying during a\u2063 2011 \u2064speech, &#8220;When you \u2064have over 90% of the world&#8217;s scientists who \u200dhave studied this stating that climate change is occurring and that humans play a contributing\u2062 role, it&#8217;s time to defer to the \u2064experts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2063 think\u200b climate \u2064change is real,\u201d he said at another event during his first term. \u201cI don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s deniable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As\u2063 Garden State governor, Christie also signed\u200d offshore wind legislation and took \u200caction to \u200creduce pollution \u200dat \u200da coal plant \u200bstraddling\u200c the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border.<\/p>\n<p>Christie said \u2063last year on ABC\u2019s This Week he supported\u200c increasing domestic oil production as the U.S. moved toward a ban \u2063on\u200d Russian energy supplies, \u2063which earned criticism from others on the \u2062panel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to do two things at the \u2064same\u200c time, and you should be able to. You have to ban\u2064 Russian\u2063 oil, and you have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-covid-19-flip-flops-a-timeline\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s COVID-19 Flip-Flops: A Timeline\">increase domestic production<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Vivek Ramaswamy<\/h3>\n<p>Vivek Ramaswamy is a biotech entrepreneur known for his role in leading the crusade\u2063 against ESG \u2062investing and \u201cwoke\u201d \u2063corporate policies on climate, \u200bwhich he skewered in his \u200cbestselling book.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy, 38, sees these pledges as a form of \u201cvirtue signaling\u201d\u200d and obfuscation by the\u2064 private\u2064 sector that allows \u200ccompanies, as he claimed during a\u2062 speech last year in Dublin, Ohio, to \u201cdo through the back door what our \u200cgovernment \u200dcouldn\u2019t directly get done \u200bthrough\u2063 the front \u200ddoor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy\u2019s personal views on climate change, \u2063or possibly policy proscriptions, however, \u200dhave\u200b been inconsistent at best.<\/p>\n<p>While he\u2063 maintains\u200b he is \u201cnot\u2062 a climate\u200b denier,\u201d he has also said\u2064 limiting carbon emissions is \u2064a \u200d\u201cflawed\u201d goal and that \u201cpeople should be proud to live a high-carbon\u200c lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Ramaswamy claimed, without evidence, that climate disaster death rates have\u200d declined by 98% over the last century and asserted the average person is now \u201c50X less likely to die of\u200d a climate-related \u200dcause than in 1920.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn inconvenient truth for the climate cult,\u201d he\u2064 said.<\/p>\n<h3>Other \u2063Candidates<\/h3>\n<p>Former Vice President Mike \u2063Pence \u200dhas acknowledged the reality\u2064 of climate change, \u200dnoting during a campaign\u200b event\u2062 in 2016 \u2063that \u201cthere\u2019s no question that\u2064 the activities that \u2063take place in this country, and \u2062in countries around the world, have some impact on the \u2064environment and \u2063some impact on climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as Trump\u2019s\u200c second-in-command, Pence supported the president\u2019s decisions \u2063to roll\u2062 back or withdraw\u200c policies\u200c to improve \u200dairways and reduce emissions and publicly backed Trump\u2019s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>In an op-ed for the\u2062 Washington Examiner earlier this week, Pence said he\u200d believes Biden&#8217;s energy agenda is crippling\u200c the industry and\u200c contributing to high\u200d inflation and\u2063 soaring \u2064costs for the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He canceled the Keystone \u2064XL pipeline, imposed drilling moratoriums, and refused to auction oil \u2063and gas leases on federal lands.\u2063 Now, \u2064he \u2062wants to cripple \u2063the \u2064energy industry by forcing it to comply with capricious \u200denvironmental, social, and corporate governance regulations,&#8221; Pence\u2062 wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He has also questioned the role that humans play in global warming, claiming \u200dearlier this month \u200bthat \u2064\u201cradical environmentalists\u201d are exaggerating the\u200d problem.<\/p>\n<p>His\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/up-for-debate-trump-desantis-and-2024-gop-hopefuls-stance-on-climate-and-green-agenda\/\" title=\"Debating Trump, DeSantis, and GOP's 2024 stance on climate and green agenda.\">political organization\u200c released materials earlier<\/a> this \u2064year calling for issuing\u200b more oil and gas leases \u2062in \u2062the U.S. and\u200c further\u200b increasing fossil fuel\u200c production.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The upcoming Republican presidential debate on Aug. 23 is crucial for candidates aiming to catch up with ex-President Donald Trump and stand out from the competition.
