I&#8217;ve been thinking about \u2063that for quite some time. I haven&#8217;t made \u2062any decisions,&#8221; Manchin\u200c shared with West Virginia radio host Hoppy Kercheval. &#8220;I \u200cwant to make sure that my voice is truly an independent voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Manchin has been keeping the political world on the edge of \u2064their\u200b seats by withholding \u2064his \u200cplans\u200b for 2024. The three-term senator has even flirted with the idea of running for president, including the possibility of \u200ba third-party run with No Labels.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The brand has become so\u2063 bad \u2014 \u2063the D brand and R brand. In West Virginia, the D brand because \u2063it&#8217;s\u200c [the] national brand. It&#8217;s not the Democrats in West Virginia, \u200cit&#8217;s the \u200dDemocrats in Washington,&#8221; Manchin explained. &#8220;You&#8217;ve heard me\u200b say a million\u2064 times \u2063I&#8217;m not a Washington Democrat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If Manchin decides to\u2063 run for re-election in\u200c West Virginia, it will \u2064undoubtedly\u200c be one of the most\u200b closely watched Senate races in the \u2064country. Despite the state&#8217;s deep red\u200b leanings, \u200cManchin\u2064 has managed to hold onto his seat since 2010, consistently\u200b defeating Republican opponents. However,\u2063 Republican \u2064strategists see West Virginia as a prime opportunity for a pickup in this\u200d cycle,\u2064 given former President Donald Trump&#8217;s strong support in the state.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/only-22-of-cable-news-is-news-study\/\" title=\"Only 22% of Cable \u2018News\u2019 is News: Study\">recent poll conducted<\/a> by the East\u200c Carolina \u200dUniversity Center for Survey Research in May showed Manchin trailing behind Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV)\u2064 by\u200d 22 points in a potential Senate matchup. \u2063Justice will first\u200d have to face \u200coff against Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) in the \u200bGOP primary race.<\/p>\n<p>If Manchin were to become an\u200b independent \u200band continue caucusing \u200dwith \u200dDemocrats, the party would still maintain a \u206351-49 majority in the \u2064chamber. However,\u200d if he were\u200c to leave the party and not\u200b caucus with \u2064Democrats,\u2064 he would lose his chairmanship\u2062 of \u200cthe \u200bSenate Energy and \u200dNatural Resources Committee.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;When I \u2062do \u200bspeak, I want to be able to speak honestly about \u2062basically \u200bthe \u200bextremes of\u200b the Democrat and Republican Party that&#8217;s harming our\u2064 nation,&#8221;\u2062 Manchin emphasized\u200c during the interview.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the past couple of years, Manchin has occasionally crossed party\u2063 lines\u200c to oppose legislation\u2064 or block\u200b White House appointees, causing some friction with the Biden administration. He has consistently \u2062stood against efforts \u200bto eliminate the filibuster, which would\u200d make it easier \u200bfor Democrats to\u200b pass legislation.\u2062 While he did block President Biden&#8217;s &#8220;Build\u200c Back Better&#8221; social \u200dspending agenda, \u200dhe eventually \u2063agreed to a more limited deal known\u200c as the Inflation Reduction Act, which \u200dincluded new spending on climate and\u200b healthcare, as well as tax \u2062increases\u200c on companies.<\/p>\n<p>Despite frustrating progressive priorities, Manchin remains the sole Democrat holding high\u200c office in West Virginia and continues to be a crucial vote for \u2062party leadership in the\u200b Senate. If he were to become\u2063 an independent, he\u2063 would\u200b join fellow centrist Sen.\u2063 Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), who announced her departure from the Democratic Party in December 2022. Sens.
