In this series, Up For Debate, the\u2062 Washington Examiner will look at a key \u2064issue or policy every \u2064day up until \u200ddebate \u200dday and where\u200d key candidates stand. Today&#8217;s story will examine abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion has already splintered the \u200cGOP primary field, giving\u200d candidates a \u2064talking point when it comes to \u200cdistinguishing \u2063themselves\u2062 in the first \u200bRepublican debate of the 2024 \u200bpresidential election cycle.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200cmany issues, analysts\u200b see the field as divided into \u200dTrump and non-Trump categories, but candidates \u200dhave positioned themselves on the abortion\u2062 debate on a\u2063 scale of \u2062whether there is \u2064a federal role in it or whether it is a state issue.<\/p>\n<h3>Up For Debate: Trump, DeSantis, and\u2062 2024 GOP Hopefuls&#8217; Stance on the Justice Department<\/h3>\n<p>For those\u200c who\u2062 see a federal responsibility to act, there is a divide \u2063on whether a president\u2064 will practically be able to enact anti-abortion legislation with a divided Congress.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Anti-abortion interest group Susan\u200d B. Anthony Pro-Life America \u200bcondemned\u2063 presidential hopeful and Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2063 (R-FL) \u2063for his statements to Megyn\u200b Kelly in an\u2062 interview in July.<\/p>\n<p>SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser \u2062said there is a national \u200cconsensus for a 15-week abortion ban based upon a\u2063 fetus&#8217;s ability to feel pain,\u2062 arguing that &#8220;the pro-life \u2064movement and the American people deserve a president who will boldly advocate this consensus and \u200bwill work to gather the votes \u200dnecessary in Congress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earning SBA\u2063 Pro-Life\u2062 America\u2019s title of &#8220;National Defender of Life&#8221; is already a\u2062 key issue in the first presidential election season in \u2064the post-Roe \u200dera.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Former President Donald \u200cTrump<\/h3>\n<p>Just as Trump has \u200cnot committed to participating\u200d in the first RNC debate of the\u200d 2024 \u2064presidential season, so too has he not clearly articulated his position on the federal role in \u2063abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Trump takes credit for being\u200d &#8220;able \u200dto kill\u2062 Roe v.\u2063 Wade&#8221; after\u200c having appointed three\u200d conservative Supreme Court justices who overruled \u2063federal constitutional protections for abortion. \u2062On the\u200b anniversary of the \u2064Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization decision, Trump said the federal government has a &#8220;vital \u2062role\u2062 &#8230; in protecting unborn life&#8221; but failed to provide specifics.<\/p>\n<p>He has, however,\u200c been critical of six-week \u2062abortion bans, calling\u2062 DeSantis\u2019s abortion legislation passed in\u200d Florida &#8220;too harsh.&#8221; Trump\u2064 also chided fellow Republicans for their hard-line stance \u2063on abortion as being the primary reason\u200b for their lack of success\u200d in the 2022 midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether he would sign a six-week abortion ban at the\u200d federal level, Trump responded, &#8220;I&#8217;m looking at all alternatives.\u2063 I&#8217;m looking \u200dat many alternatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL)<\/h3>\n<p>Although DeSantis has touted his six-week abortion ban \u200cin\u2064 Florida, DeSantis says that he would &#8220;always \u200dcome down\u200d on\u200c the side of life&#8221; as president but is not hopeful in the possibility \u200cof achieving similar federal limits to the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the states have the primary jurisdiction,&#8221; DeSantis told Kelly last week. &#8220;I think\u2062 there is a federal\u2063 interest, but I think \u2063the reality \u2064is \u200bthat the\u2063 country is \u200ddivided on\u2064 it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis added he does not &#8220;have much confidence Congress is \u200bgoing to do anything meaningful \u200bin this regard&#8221; and that, at least for the time\u200b being, \u2064anti-abortion advocates will need to rely \u2064on differences in the states to enact\u2063 abortion restrictions.<\/p>\n<h3>Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC)<\/h3>\n<p>Scott has clearly \u200dadvocated a national 15-week \u200dabortion ban \u2064&#8221;to stop\u200c blue states from \u2062pushing abortion on demand,&#8221;\u2064 adding that &#8220;without life, nothing matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To get national legislation, however, Scott\u200d has emphasized the need\u2063 to foster a healthy \u200dnational dialogue about the &#8220;culture of \u200clife.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We won\u2019t see legislation like that come through Congress\u2063 if \u2062we don\u2019t first\u2064 win the hearts and minds \u2062of the American people,&#8221;\u2063 Scott said in an\u200c NBC interview \u200bin May. &#8220;If we don\u2019t have that conversation, if \u2062all we\u2019re gonna do is demonize folks, we won\u2019t get there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Former South Carolina Gov. and \u200bU.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley<\/h3>\n<p>Haley\u2019s campaign has \u2064emphasized women\u2019s\u2062 issues, including abortion and\u200d transgender debates, from a \u200bfeminine perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Although Haley said she sees room for federal action on\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/codify-roe-is-bidens-euphemism-for-democrats-atrocious-aim-unregulated-abortion-anywhere-anytime\/\" title=\"\u2018Codify Roe\u2019 Is Biden\u2019s Euphemism For Democrats\u2019 Atrocious Aim: Unregulated Abortion Anywhere, Anytime\">late-term abortion bans<\/a>, protections for\u200d children born alive during failed \u2063abortions, and federal support \u200cfor \u200cmothers and adoption, \u200cshe does not think a federal ban \u200bon abortion\u2064 is feasible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a practical matter, \u2062you only\u2063 achieve\u200d consensus when you \u200chave a House majority, a 60-vote Senate majority, \u2064and a president who are all in alignment. We are \u2064nowhere close to reaching that point,&#8221; \u2062Haley said during a speech for SBA Pro-Life America in\u2064 April.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They know as well as \u2064anyone \u200bthat \u2064no Republican president will have the ability \u2064to ban abortion nationwide, just as no Democratic president \u200bcan override \u200bthe laws of all 50 states,&#8221;\u200c Haley said. &#8220;It\u2019s just \u200cnot going to happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Vivek Ramaswamy<\/h3>\n<p>An &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-police-chief-leads-gretchen-whitmer-in-governors-race-poll\/\" title=\"Former Police Chief Leads Gretchen Whitmer In Governor\u2019s Race: Poll\">unapologetically pro-life<\/a>&#8221; candidate, Ramaswamy has said abortion is a &#8220;human rights issue&#8221; and \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/up-for-debate-trump-desantis-and-2024-gop-hopefuls-stances-on-abortion\/\" title=\"Debate: Trump, DeSantis, and 2024 GOP candidates' views on abortion.\">supports state-level abortion bans<\/a> after six weeks&#8217;\u200b gestation due to the presence of fetal electrical \u2062brain \u200bactivity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Life ends right \u200cwhen &#8230; brainwaves\u200b end \u2062\u2014\u2063 that&#8217;s how we determine when life ends on the back\u2062 end,\u201d \u200bRamaswamy\u2064 said in an\u2063 interview in April. \u201cI think we should apply \u2062a\u200c consistent principle on the front end \u2014 that&#8217;s \u2062around the six-week\u200b mark that brainwaves do begin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At the same time,\u2064 however, Ramaswamy does not support\u200d federal involvement \u200bin regulating the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not an answer for the president because I think the federal government should be out of this,\u201d Ramaswamy said in July. \u2064\u201cBut if you\u2019re a\u2062 governor or you\u2019re \u2063dealing \u200cwithin the\u200b states, I can share with you my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Others<\/h3>\n<p>Former Vice President\u2064 Mike Pence responded to SBA Pro-Life America\u2019s call for an anti-abortion president, saying that \u201cpro-life Americans \u2062will\u2063 have a champion \u2062in the White\u200d House\u201d\u2062 when he is president.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview in \u2063April, Pence reiterated his anti-abortion stance, saying he would also like to see the abortion pill mifepristone \u201coff the market\u201d because it\u200c has \u201ccaused great harm for women across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Arkansas Gov. Asa\u2063 Hutchinson\u200b has said abortion will not be\u200c a\u2062 priority for voters in 2024 but has also made clear that he will sign any federal abortion legislation that\u200b has exceptions for rape and incest.<\/p>\n<p>Both former\u2063 New \u200bJersey Gov. Chris Christie\u2062 and Gov.
