As The Federalist\u2019s Evita \u200bDuffy-Alfonso previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/09\/fbi-retracts-memo-labeling-traditional-catholics-violent-white-supremacists-pushing-infiltration-of-christian-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, the memo said the Bureau\u200b \u201cmay potentially mitigate\u201d the supposed \u201cthreat\u201d of\u200c \u201cRadical-Traditionalist Catholics\u201d with \u201c\u2019tripwire \u200cand \u2064source development,\u2019 which means further infiltration\u200d into Catholic communities using various \u2064kinds of informants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his July \u200b12 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, Wray <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/fbi-memo-targeting-catholic-group-went-beyond-richmond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> the January memo\u2062 was \u201ca single product by a single field office.\u201d According \u200bto \u200ca newly unredacted version of the document obtained\u2064 by House Republicans, however, that statement doesn\u2019t appear \u2062to \u2063be true.<\/p>\n<p>After months of the FBI stonewalling\u2064 Republicans\u2019 oversight \u2063efforts,\u2064 the new version of the memo given to the Judiciary Committee on July 25 purportedly shows that the \u2062agency\u2019s Portland and Los Angeles field offices \u201cwere \u200cinvolved \u200cin\u200c or contributed to the \u2063creation of FBI\u2019s assessment of traditional Catholics as potential domestic terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe document cited reporting\u200d from an \u2018FBI Portland \u2062liaison\u200c contact\u2063 with indirect \u200caccess\u2019 who informed\u200b on a \u2018deceased \u200b [Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremist (RMVE)] subject\u2019 who\u2062 had \u2018sought out a mainline Roman Catholic \u2062community\u2019 and\u200d then \u2018gravitated\u200d to [Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX)],&#8217;\u201d the memo reads. \u201cIn \u2062addition,\u2062 the document noted how an\u200c FBI undercover employee with \u2018direct access\u2019 reported on a subject who \u2018attended the SSPX-affiliated [redacted] Church in [redacted] California, for over \u2064a year prior \u200bto his \u200brelocation.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The document furthermore stated that \u201cFBI\u2019s Los Angeles Field Office initiated an investigation on the \u2018RMVE subject\u2019 and that the FBI Richmond\u200d office \u201c\u2018[c]oordinated\u2062 with\u2019 FBI Portland in preparing the assessment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In their Wednesday letter to Wray,\u200c House Republicans \u200dquestioned why the FBI \u2062repeatedly redacted such information in previous versions \u200cof the memo provided to the Judiciary \u200dCommittee and furthermore invited Wray to \u201camend\u201d his \u200ctestimony \u201cto fully explain the\u200b nature and scope of the FBI\u2019s assessment\u2062 of traditional Catholics as potential domestic terrorists.\u201d The Judiciary Committee is \u200dadditionally requesting \u2062the FBI turn\u2064 over all communications between the agency\u2019s Richmond, Portland, and Los Angeles bureaus related to the January\u2063 memo by\u200c Aug.\u200b 23.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Shawn Fleetwood is a\u2062 staff writer for The Federalist\u2062 and a graduate of the\u2063 University of Mary Washington.
