Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, chairman \u2064of the \u2064Subcommittee on Oversight for the Committee on House Administration, is heading a GOP effort to audit the January \u20626 committee\u2019s\u200c findings \u2063but \u2064says his probe has been hampered because\u200d of a lack of documentation, according to Fox News. Numerous documents and recordings, as well as the January 6 committee\u2019s communications with the White House, appear to \u2063be missing from the stores of information and \u200bdata left \u2064for Loudermilk to\u200c sort \u200bthrough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took us a long\u2062 time going through it\u200c and one thing I started realizing is we don\u2019t have anything much at all from the Blue \u2062Team,\u201d Loudermilk told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/j6-committee-failed-to-preserve-records-has-no-data-on-capitol-hill-security-failures-gop-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>, \u2062referencing a\u2063 subgroup on the January 6 \u200bcommittee tasked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jan-6-committee-avoids-probing-security-failures-as-hearing-finally-covers-capitol-riot\/\" title=\"Jan. 6 Committee Avoids Probing Security Failures As Hearing Finally Covers Capitol Riot\">probing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/d-c-mayor-congress-must-open-a-probe-into-security-failures-at-u-s-capitol\/\" title=\"D.C. Mayor: Congress must open a probe into security failures at U.S. Capitol\">security failures<\/a><\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve\u2063 got lots of depositions, we\u2019ve got lots of subpoenas, we\u2019ve got video\u2064 and other documents\u200b provided through subpoenas by individuals. But we\u2019re not\u200c seeing anything \u2062from the Blue Team as far as reports on\u2064 the investigation \u200dthey\u200d did looking into the \u2064actual breach itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loudermilk said, based on people \u2063he spoke with, the\u200c select committee on January 6 intentionally\u2064 did not investigate security failures \u2064that contributed to the riot in \u2064order to focus blame on former President Donald Trump. Former January 6 committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said last month\u200b that he believes his committee\u2019s work \u201cput significant pressure\u201d on the Department of Justice to indict Trump over January 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2062 think up until that point \u2062of \u200cthe hearings, it \u2062could have \u2062gone either way. \u2062But I think the compelling argument that we \u200dmade as a \u2063committee \u200cfor millions of Americans as to how close we came to losing our \u200bdemocracy, [the Justice Department] really didn\u2019t \u2026 have a choice,\u201d Thompson <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4127211-bennie-thompson-says-jan-6-hearings-helped-pressure-doj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.\u2063 \u201cAnd when the special prosecutor was put forth, I think we helped make \u200dhis case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c gaps in the \u2064January 6 committee\u2064 records \u200bcame to light after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/was-hunter-framed-second-suspect-emerges-in-wh-cocaine-scandal\/\" title=\"New suspect emerges in WH cocaine scandal, raising questions about Hunter's innocence.\">defense attorneys representing clients charged<\/a> over the riot began requesting \u2064documents\u200d and other evidence from Loudermilk for\u2062 their cases. The congressman said some of what he was asked for, \u2062he did not have.<\/p>\n<p>Loudermilk relayed his concerns to Thompson, who said \u2064that his committee \u2063turned over all that was required of it, totaling four terabytes of \u2062information. Loudermilk contested that \u200bclaim, saying he had \u200bonly received 2.5 terabytes of data. He also\u2062 said that Thompson\u2019s committee violated \u200cfederal law and admitted as much in \u2064a footnote of a letter Thompson sent\u200d Loudermilk on July 7. Thompson has denied\u2064 the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>The footnote said \u2063in part: \u201cConsistent with guidance from the Office of the Clerk and other\u2064 authorities, the Select \u2062Committee did not archive temporary committee records that were not \u200delevated by the Committee\u2019s actions, such as use in hearings or official \u2063publications,\u2062 or those that did not further its investigative activities. Accordingly, and contrary to your letter\u2019s implication, the\u200b Select Committee was not obligated to archive all video recordings\u200d of transcribed \u2064interviews or depositions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loudermilk told Fox News: \u200d\u201cIt was clear in law they had to especially \u200band, I\u2063 mean if \u2064there was any question, the fact that they \u2062used the videos\u2064 in \u200bthe hearings would dictate that it\u200b had to\u200c be preserved. The more we \u2062go in the more we\u2019re realizing \u2062that there\u2019s things that we don\u2019t have. We don\u2019t have anything about security failures at the Capitol, we don\u2019t have the videos of the depositions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Georgia Republican also discovered \u2064that missing from the January 6 files are an unknown number \u200bof communications sent between the committee and the White House. Loudermilk made the discovery when he obtained\u200c a letter sent from \u200cThompson to the White \u200cHouse and the Department of Homeland Security \u200b(DHS)\u2062 that was not included in the committee\u2019s files.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo version of the letter to Mr. Sauber \u2014 either redacted or unredacted \u2014 or the letter\u200d to the DHS General\u200b Counsel was archived by the Select Committee or provided to this Committee,\u201d Loudermilk wrote in a letter to \u200bThompson.<\/p>\n<p>The January 6 committee \u200dwas largely a Democratic effort, except for former Republican Reps. Liz Cheney of\u200d Wyoming and\u200b Adam Kinzinger of Illinois,\u2063 who joined the committee after Republican \u200dleader Kevin McCarthy refused to\u2063 countenance the committee over restrictions on \u2063which Republicans could join.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House committee probing the January 6 Capitol riot failed to adequately record and preserve its communications and collected records.
