To save money, \u2063some have even resorted to sharing a bed with a stranger.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s\u2062 youth jobless rate jumped to a record 21.3%\u2064 in \u200dJune as offers during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/struggling-chinese-graduates-return-to-hometowns-as-job-market-sags\/\" title=\"Chinese graduates are returning to their hometowns due to a weak job market.\">traditional job-hunting\u200d season proved limited<\/a> as the \u200ceconomy struggled and regulatory clamp-downs left the\u200d property, tech and education sectors\u2062 bruised.<\/p>\n<p>In June, a statistics bureau official said that more than\u2062 6 million young people were unemployed.<\/p>\n<p>Some 47% of graduates returned home within six months of graduation \u200din 2022, up \u2064from\u200c 43% in 2018, state-run China News Service reported on Tuesday,\u2062 citing a\u2062 private sector survey.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers\u2062 varied by region, with 59% of graduates in the well-developed east heading home. That compared \u200bto 44% in the\u200c west and just 24% in the northeast rust belt.<\/p>\n<p>Also pushing the young to\u2062 return home were soaring rents. Among China\u2019s biggest\u2064 first-tier cities, rents in Beijing climbed 5% from December\u2063 to June followed by 2.8% gains in Guangzhou and\u2064 Shenzhen, according\u2064 to state-run \u200cXinhua news agency.<\/p>\n<h3>Not Giving Up on\u200b the City Dream<\/h3>\n<p>Not everyone is giving up.<\/p>\n<p>After sending\u200d 10 copies\u2063 of her resume to financial companies\u2063 each month, \u200cJoyce Zhang, a 2022 graduate with a masters\u2062 degree in \u2062financial engineering, said she had still not found a \u2063job in Beijing but\u2062 was not going\u2064 home yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve considered \u200bgoing back to Inner Mongolia to work, as the financial\u200b sector is not doing good recently. But I guess I still want to give\u200d it a try,\u201d Zhang told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang\u2019s parents are paying her monthly rent of\u2062 2,600 yuan ($361) for \u200ca\u200c 12-square-metre (129-square-foot)\u2064 room with \u2062a shared kitchen and bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>Policymakers have rolled out measures to\u200b support youth seeking\u200c work and rental housing, with some more creative\u2063 than others.<\/p>\n<p>A district in Hangzhou in eastern Zhejiang\u200c province offers free rent for eligible people in a \u200bnursing home, as\u2064 long\u200b as they spend 10 hours or\u200b more a month with the elderly and pay a 300\u2062 yuan\u200d management\u2064 fee.<\/p>\n<p>To keep costs\u200c down as they stay longer \u200din hope of finding a job,\u2062 some young mega-city drifters even share \u2062their beds with strangers.
